Prime Video has no shortage of shows or movies arriving in September. The biggest new show on the block for Amazon Studios is “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” which is a prequel based on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien that’s set thousands of years before the events of “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings.” Several new 2022 films will be available on the streamer as well: including Channing Tatum’s “Dog,” Michael Bay’s “Ambulance,” Zac Efron’s “Firestarter,” Dylan O’Brien’s “The Outfit,” and more.
Noteworthy library titles arriving this month include “Fight Club” (1999), “Legally Blonde” (2001) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991).

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

Tom Epperson and his wife Stefani Ames are leaving town, heading to Santa Fe in early May—another player from the movie era of the 90’s and early 2000’s soon gone.
They’ve been scattering for a while now, to Long Island, Palm Springs, D. C., Serbia, anywhere but Los Angeles. The local climate is still good. But the film industry, if that anachronistic term still applies, has been less than friendly to mature, seasoned talents who had mastered the art of making popular, grown-up, full-screen movies in a self-contained two-hour format. So they bail, a lot of them, figuring it’s better to start fresh somewhere else than to sit around a table at the Brentwood Country Mart, talking about what used to be.

Director Mike Leigh’s social-personal observations of life as it is lived in the U.K. always get to me — this one may simply be a more realistic soap opera, but it’s so good that one pays no attention to technical matters, who the actors are or when they are ‘acting’ … it just ‘is,’ and it’s so involving that one becomes anxious over the smallest thing. Leigh’s most acclaimed picture is the perfect antidote for bloated event filmmaking. And unlike some of his pictures, you walk out with a smile on your face.

I sat down with Oscar-winning screenwriter, actor, director and musician Billy Bob Thornton for Venice Magazine in October of 2001. He had a slate of very diverse projects he was promoting: his first solo music album, "Private Radio," as well as the films "Monster's Ball," "Bandits," and "The Man Who Wasn't There." My strongest memory is of Thornton's quiet intensity and an undercurrent of Southern affability, which came out once he decided you were okay. He seemed to feel that way about me after I shared with him my idolatry of legendary filmmaker Fred Zinnemann, something we shared. I also remember his unusual diet, when our lunch was served. Thornton got the biggest plate of sliced papaya I've seen to date, artfully presented. I got a seafood salad. He looked at my plate, smiled, and told me about the horrible shellfish allergy he'd been saddled with all his life, and how...

While there's still no sign of Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" at either Venice, Toronto or New York (perhaps it'll pop up in Telluride?), the anticipation for the film still remains very high. Not only does it feature a ridiculous cast (Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz and more), it also has a script from one of America's literary titans, Cormac McCarthy. This is something written directly for the screen, not an adaption of a book, but as hardcore fans know, this isn't the first script he's written. Way, way back in 1977 PBS unveiled "The Gardener's Son," as part of their "Visions" series of original programming, and it's a feature length film penned by none other than McCarthy. And thanks to helpful reader Luca for the heads up, you can watch the nearly two-hour movie in full below. Starring Ned Beatty, Kevin Conway, Brad Dourif and Penelope Allen,...

Darryl Stephens finds himself in bed with Sean Wing in A Family Thing.
Darryl Stephens isn't resting on his laurels as we collectively wait to see if his series Dtla returns to Logo. Instead, he dove headfirst into a juicy part on the Los Angeles stage in the new play A Family Thing.
Presented by the Echo Theater Company, the play, by out playwright Gary Lennon (who also has extensive credits in film and TV) looks at a family of three estranged brothers – one a felon, one an addict and the other a writer (who happens to be gay) and what happens when they come back together. With much humor to balance out some of the play’s heavier moments, the focus is on the idea that family is the thing that brings us together as well as what tears us apart. Hopefully the production will also convince people that...

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Robert Duvall revealed at last Friday’s Critic Choice Movie Awards that he's eying Billy Bob Thornton’s “Jayne Mansfield’s Car," his next directorial effort. Thornton first revealed the project late last year, and the film will find him starring and directing a script he co-wrote with Tom Epperson, with whom he worked on "One False Move" and "A Family Thing" that starred Duvall. “It’s another Southern tale,” Duvall saiid. “It puts Tennessee Williams in the back seat — it’s that brilliant.” Duvall told EW that he would take a supporting role, as Thornton--the writer and director…...

Back Stage asked some of James Earl Jones' co-stars to share their memories of working with the legendary actor. Their responses -- ranging from words of praise and anecdotes to a genuine original poem -- are presented here, with gratitude to these generous stars in their own rights."Working with James Earl Jones in Of Mice and Men was a master class in acting. He was absolutely brilliant and generous, and I cherish it. He bent over backwards to give me the moments I needed in the scenes we shared. My work in that play is one of the things I'm most proud of. And that's largely because of him." -- Kevin Conway"Working with Jimmy was a total delight. The play, A Lesson From Aloes, was so demanding. We'd go out on a limb together, and no matter what I tried, I knew he'd be there to catch me.

- The Los Angeles Times call Tom Epperson's novel "a movie-worthy gangster tale". Take a guess where this one is headed. Variety reports that Epperson will be adapting from his own novel and Gone Baby Gone producer Sean Bailey has selected Casey Affleck for a lead role that will ask for either a lot of Brylcreem or a top hat. Set in the 1930s Los Angeles and centers on an amnesiac (Affleck) who finds himself working for a mobster -- a sadistic killer given the nickname "the Kind One" -- and falling in love with the thug's girlfriend. Coming off such a great year with the title mentioned above and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford this would be a down the road project for Affleck.
