In an interview with "Time Out Film", Terence Davies said about this film, "[It] doesn't work, and that's entirely my fault. The only thing I can say is that it's a transition work. And I couldn't have done The House of Mirth (2000) without it."
Terence Davies used to meet Gena Rowlands before every scene: he would carry a book and read a poem to her. He loved to choose a passage he felt would help the preparation for the scene. Gene Rowlands praised that method she said never have seen before and made her discover many authors, "from Wystan Hugh Auden" to others more contemporary.
During her same interviews with Stig Björkman , Gena Rowlands added: "Terence is an encyclopedia".
