For many cinephiles, November becomes Noirvember, a month dedicated to noir movies.

Noir is often characterized by its fatalistic outlook, highly stylized imagery, down-on-their-luck and morally ambiguous protagonists, urban settings, shadows, corruption, narration, and of course, the femme fatale. All of these elements marry well with our favorite genre: horror.

This week’s streaming picks blend noir and horror together, kicking off your #Noirvember with horror movies that bear the earmarks of a classic noir film.

Angel Heart– Hoopla, Kanopy

The perfect marriage of psychological horror and noir, Angel Heart follows Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke), a private investigator that Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro) hires to track down missing musician Johnny Favorite. Harry’s search leads him to New Orleans, where he finds voodoo, murder, love, and a deal with the devil.

Umbrella Entertainment resurrected a forgotten flick from the mid-90s with their Blu-ray release of Lord of Illusions last year. Back in 1995, writer-director Clive Barker ventured outside his normal horror otherworld playground to deliver this unconventional story that is part film noir and part supernatural fantasy thriller, but the result is all entertaining. Besides being a Barker joint, it starred an ex-Quantum Leaper, a Bond villain and a Seinfeld boss who loved making life a living hell for George Costanza!

And almost thirty years later, it indeed might be worth a revisit through fresh eyes.

Lord of Wolves, the latest film from British writer/director Charlie Steeds, marks the third time he’s taken on the subject of lycanthropy. Unlike A Werewolf in England and Werewolf Castle, Lord of Wolves creates a new version of the werewolf mythos. Trying to redefine a traditional creature can be a risky task, especially to the extent that Steed does it here, but what he has in mind for them is quite interesting.

Nic Cross is a photographer living in London. On his way home one evening, he sees a strange man in the subway holding an object shaped like a pyramid. When his roommate and mentor Professor Malone suddenly dies, he comes into possession of one like it.

Fantastic Pavilion, the genre business hub launched at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, announced a slew of deals closed at the venue this year, with L..A-based Severin Films, a boutique Blu-ray and DVD label, inking a pact to release eleven Special Edition physical discs of the most popular Originals and licensed features from horror subscription streamer Shudder and IFC Films.

Initial titles include Joko Anwar’s “Satan’s Slaves”; Brandon Cronenberg’s “Antiviral”; Can Evrenol’s “Baskin”; Franck Khalfoun’s 2012 remake of “Maniac”; Douglas Buck’s 2006 remake of “Sisters” and André Øvredal’s “The Autopsy of Jane Doe.”

The deal was brokered by Severin Film’s co-founder-ceo David Gregory, Shudder’s Vice President of Programming Sam Zimmerman, and AMC Networks Director of Content Sales Lucas Verga.

From one 1999 horror remake to another. After rewatching The Haunting with eyes that were both more critical and 25 years older, it got me thinking about the other remake that came out that year. One that was a remake of a far sillier movie and that was the first effort from a new studio, namely Dark Castle Entertainment. The original was from a far less dark castle in that of schlock and gimmick purveyor William Castle and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill (watch it Here) look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever.

"Star Trek" is notoriously good to its actors. If a hard-working performer gets a small gig in one episode of "Star Trek," it becomes incredibly likely they'll be invited back for another. Armin Shimerman, for instance, played a talking treasure chest and a random Ferengi character on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" years before he was offered the main role of Quark on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." Likewise, Tim Russ played a terrorist on the "Next Generation" episode "Starship Mine" before he became Tuvok on "Star Trek: Voyager." There are dozens of other examples. With the possible exception of LeVar Burton, actor Scott Bakula was the biggest American celebrity to be cast as a main character on a "Star Trek" show up to that point. "Star Trek" typically cast recognizable working actors with solid careers, or newcomers and professionally trained stage performers. The characters and the setting were the key selling points, not the dazzle of celebrity. It's possible that the casting directors of Trek shows wanted the franchise to retain a timeless quality. The risk of casting a hot-right-now celebrity could potentially rob from that timelessness. 

More recent "Star Trek" shows have cast more famous people -- Michelle Yeoh is a notable standout -- but for the most part, casting would fall into the realm of "Hey! It's the actress from 'Remo Williams!' or "Why is Cheryl McFadden calling herself Gates now?" 

The makers of "Enterprise," however, were not intimidated by Bakula's popularity.

Summer movie season is heating up, but if you can’t make it out to a theater, there are plenty of great films to stream at home in May. This month sees the streaming debut of Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” which, judging by the box office, many of you skipped seeing in theaters. The sequel hits Disney+ on May 17, a week after the Disney+ streaming debut of the Tom Holland-fronted “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and a couple of days before the Jack Harlow-fronted “White Men Can’t Jump” remake debuts on Hulu.

The well-reviewed drama “Air” — written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, directed by Affleck and starring both — comes to Prime Video on May 12 after an exclusive theatrical run, and Netflix has an Anna Nicole Smith documentary hitting on May 16.

A series premiere, a long-awaited season return and a bevy of great movies are new on HBO and HBO Max this month. May 1 marks the series debut of “White House Plumbers,” the new limited series from “Veep” showrunner David Mandel that chronicles the Watergate break-in and fallout. That show airs on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. Then on May 4, the comedy “The Other Two” returns for its third season on HBO Max.

The sixth season of the animated series “Rick and Morty” will be available to stream on HBO Max starting on May 11, and in terms of library titles the “Men in Black” trilogy, the comedies “Step Brothers” and “Some Like It Hot” and Jonah Hill’s directorial debut “Mid90s” all come to HBO and HBO Max this month.

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.

The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.

Phenomena is a substantially different movie depending on how you first saw it. Audiences in its native Italy were able to see the original 116-minute film as director Dario Argento intended for its initial release in 1985. That cut was pruned down to 110 minutes for international release. In America, however, New Line Cinema cut the picture to 83 minutes before putting it out under the title Creepers in 1986. Finding its audience in the VHS rental market, this was the only version available in the US until DVD came around.

Each version has its advantages and disadvantages. The original integral cut contains everything, but it drags a bit in the middle and there are a few moments that were never dubbed into English. For every completed film or TV project associated with Clive Barker, there are probably 10 that never saw the light of day. Barker, for those unfamiliar, is the author behind the books "The Great and Secret Show," "Imajica," and "Weaveworld," each of them sprawling, interdimensional fantasy epics full of horror, queerness, sex, and violence. In 1986, Barker wrote the novella "The Hellbound Heart," which he adapted into the feature film "Hellraiser" the following year. Barker also wrote and directed the 1990 film "Night Breed" (based on his 1988 novella "Cabal") and the 1995 film "Lord of Illusions." He also wrote the short story that inspired "Candyman."

The arrival of Clive Barker’s Books of Blood in 1984 and 1985 was an earthshaking event in horror literature. No less an authority than Stephen King called Barker “the future of horror,” leading to a tsunami of acclaim for the six volumes of collected short stories. Barker’s vast imagination, his creation of new monsters that eclipsed standard fare like vampires and witches, and his visceral, blood-soaked prose were a jolt for the horror genre that probably influenced a generation of writers and filmmakers.

Speaking of the latter, a number of stories from the books were adapted for the screen, including the title tale itself (which acted as a framing device for all the stories), “The Midnight Meat Train,” “Dread,” and “The Forbidden,” the latter of which formed the basis of the soon-to-be-rebooted Candyman franchise. Barker himself directed Lord of Illusions, based on the Books of Blood story “The Last Illusion.

When it comes to great genre movies, there are just names you will always trust. Names like Romero, Craven, Cronenberg, Carpenter, Hitchcock, Dante, and many, many more, of course. So, with that in mind, I decided to round up 31 different films helmed by some of our Masters of Horror that are currently streaming across an array of digital platforms, including a few not-as-obvious choices that have thrilled audiences in a variety of mediums (such as William Peter Blatty and Jennifer Lynch).

The eternal tormentor returns in Dimension Films’ Hellraiser: Judgment, the tenth film in the franchise created by Clive Barker. With production currently underway on the project, the actor playing Pinhead has been revealed, along with the rest of the main cast, which includes an actress from another enduring horror franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Bloody Disgusting reports that Paul T. Taylor plays Pinhead in Hellraiser: Judgment. An actor with experience both on the stage and in front of the camera, Taylor has appeared in a number of films and TV shows, including Sin City, Deadroom, and Super. Hellraiser: Judgment director Gary J. Tunnicliffe told Fangoria that Taylor will bring “more than a hint of Peter Cushing and Ralph Fiennes” to the role of Pinhead.

Why isn’t there more horror noir? With the exception of a few movies — 1987’s Angel Heart and the 1991 made-for-hbo film, Cast a Deadly Spell, among them — not many filmmakers have crossbred the horror genre with hardboiled film noir. And yet it seems like such a natural fit: film noir’s propensity for shadowy photography, its fascination with the dark side of human nature and a willingness to be unremittingly bleak all lends itself to horror, which so often embraces similar conventions. And, yet, the horror noir remains a rare animal.

In 1993, author and filmmaker Clive Barker created his own horror/noir hybrid with Lord of Illusions, adapted from his own short story, “The Last Illusion” (from Books of Blood Volume 6). He could be terrifying in horror movies and terrifyingly stern in his numerous turns as an authority figure, but prolific, talented character actor Daniel Von Bargen turned his hand to many different roles. It has now been confirmed that he has died at the age of 64.Von Bargen, born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1950, and studied at Purdue University in Indiana. Theatre was one of his driving passions; he enjoyed a long residency at the Trinity Repertory Company in Rhode Island and appeared in productions for the American Repertory Theatre in Massachusetts, which saw him head for New York, appearing both on and off Broadway. Film-wise, he became known as a reliable character actor, able to be threatening and commanding and picking up a variety of roles as police officers and military men in films such as Silence Of The Lambs, Basic Instinct, Rising Sun, Six Degrees Of Separation, Philadelphia, Crimson Tide...

Deadly Magazine #6 is a special issue highlighting the work of Clive Barker. Horror's great imaginer has been especially busy over the last couple of years, and our features include a Hellraiser and Nightbreed retrospective with key cast members.

In late October, the director’s cut of Nightbreed was finally unleashed upon hungry fans. We’ve been waiting for that release for what seems like decades, and its pre-order phase was met with the appropriate internet buzz, both good and bad. Now Scream Factory are dropping another Clive Barker film upon us, and it too comes with a Director’s Cut, as well as the Theatrical Cut. Some may argue that this is the superior film of the two releases. Some, but not myself. Don’t get me wrong, I love Lord of Illusions, and especially the director’s cut, but for me, Nightbreed is the perfect monster movie. There’s been a lot of talk about the director’s cut of Nightbreed, but fans of Clive Barker also have a Lord of Illusions Blu-ray to look forward this month. Due out on December 16th, we have a a look at two clips from the upcoming release.

Clive Barker has just submitted the latest draft of the new Hellraiser screenplay. And he's revealed one or two things about it...

Rebooting of horror franchises is rarely, for good reason, something welcomed with particularly open arms. However, one thing going for the planed new take on Hellraiser is that its original creator, Clive Barker, is involved. In fact, he's more than involved: Barker is penning the screenplay for the film, and he's now submitted a second draft of his script to The Weinstein Company.

Chatting to Entertainment Weekly, Barker revealed more of the new Hellraiser. "I think the phrase is ‘reboot'", he said, "although I’ve never really understood what that meant".

"I wanted to make sure we sounded some fresh notes. The movie actually begins on Devil’s Island. I wanted to fold into the Hellraiser narrative something about the guy - the Frenchman Lemarchand - who made the mysterious box,...

Last year around this time, Clive Barker ("Lord of Illusions") revealed on his official facebook page that he was writing a reboot of 1987's Hellraiser, which is based on the novella The Hellbound Heart. Since then we haven't heard anything about it, until Entertainment Weekly recently posted a new article featuring Clive Barker. In the piece, we learn that Barker sent a second draft of the script to Dimension Films chief Bob Weinstein (producer) a short time ago. Barker also discussed some details regarding the film's plot.
