Matti Kassila had already decided to retire from film-making and started to write a detective novel, when producer Matti Ollila read the first draft of the book and suggested Kassila to make a film out of it. Kassila claimed to be too old to make movies, but Ollila managed to persuade Kassila to return to the director's seat.
The steam locomotive in the movie is number 1033 of the Tr1 series.
