In the 1980s, Hollywood didn’t quite know what to do with Rutger Hauer. The actor broke out in a pretty major way following his acclaimed turn in Paul Verhoeven’s Soldier of Orange, paving the way for his American debut in the Sylvester Stallone thriller Nighthawks, where he played the villain Wulfgar. His performance as Roy Batty in Blade Runner blew people away, and for a while, it looked like he might become the next big Hollywood heartthrob, especially when he signed on to star in the epic adventure film Ladyhawke opposite Michelle Pfeiffer for Richard Donner.
But major stardom didn’t happen? Why? Perhaps it was because the movies of Hauer’s that did best at the box office were the ones where he played the villain, such as The Hitcher. He was so unforgettable as a bad guy that when he played a hero, such as in...

The biggest challenge for Officer Kevin Atwater (Laroyce Hawkins) in the next Chicago P.D. episode highlighting his character is himself. In the February 21 “Split Second,” a string of jewelry store robberies shakes his confidence. “I think he’s most challenged just by really trying to get out of his own way. Atwater has a tendency to want to take full accountability for everything. Whether it’s his private endeavors with his building, his family, his team, he has a knack for just wanting to take it all,” Hawkins tells TV Insider. “And I think this episode, he struggles with that. So the challenge would be Atwater getting out of his own way and allowing himself the grace to be able to grow and let go.” The good news: He has Intelligence to back him up. “He is going to be leaning on everybody, and you’ll see pops where...

As part of the 2023 Tribeca Festival, director Mario Van Peebles opened up about his directorial debut, 1991’s “New Jack City,” alongside Fab 5 Freddy, Vanessa Williams and Michael Michele with an at-capacity crowd at the Sva Theater for an illuminating 35 minutes full of joy, surprises and honesty.
It can’t be understated how jovial Van Peebles—the son of prolific Black filmmaker Mario Van Peebles—was from the moment he stepped on stage to quickly introduce the film, which chronicles the rise of a ruthless drug lord in the dilapidated slums of late-1980s New York City. By the time the opening credits began to roll he was encouraging a major clap-along in the audience to the groove-worthy opening track. His energy, which stayed high until his final goodbyes at the end of the night, was infectious.

The Black List, an annual ranking of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays, has unleashed its 2021 edition — a smattering of delicious pop biopics, true crime and even a psychodrama about Mickey Rourke appearing on “The Masked Singer.”
Founded in 2005 by Franklin Leonard, the list surveys top studio and development executives asking them to share the scripts they adored but haven’t yet greenlit. The rankings are then cross-referenced, and popularity is calculated by the frequency a title appears (the “mentions”).
The top script on this year’s list is “Cauliflower,” an intense drama from writer Daniel Jackson.
“Under the cruel guidance of a mysterious coach, an ambitious high school wrestler struggles to become a state champion while battling a bizarre infection in his ear that both makes him dominant in his sport and threatens his sanity,” the synopsis reads. The script was mentioned 32 times across rankings. Jackson is repped by UTA and Bellevue.

Fighting game stories are an interesting piece of the genre’s puzzle. While some players might think they’re unnecessary, story campaigns actually give these games their distinct personalities. Plot links the characters and adds interesting layers to their relationships besides just punching each other, it gives the player a reason to finish the game with every character, and it leads to interesting pieces of lore, many of which have inspired movies and comics.
But many of these series have been out for decades. What happens when their stories and continuities get too unruly? Especially when it comes to fighting games, the stories and retcons to those stories become so convoluted that developers decide to just go back to square one. Yet, even those timeline reboots aren’t so simple.

Mvd Entertainment Is Proud To Announce The North American High Definition Debut Of The 1992 Sci-fi Action Cult Classic “Split Second” On Blu-ray In An Ultimate Collector’S Edition.
In the year 2008, the cops are better armed than before, but nothing has prepared them for this. Swift, sharp-clawed and deadly, something moves among them on the streets, in the alleyways, on the rooftops, tearing out human hearts and devouring them. Maverick cop “Harley” Stone (Rutger Hauer) lost his partner to the beast, and now it looks like his girlfriend Michelle (Kim Cattrall) is next on the killer’s list. Even in the future, there aren’t guns big enough to stop the creature’s deadly force, but Stone has no choice. Crossbreed is a low budget sci-fi/horror action film about a group of oversized ex-soldiers on a mission to retrieve an alien cargo from a group of eeeeeevil mercenaries. It’s a film where men are men; they have big guns, and all the usual cliches apply. It’s a homage to every sci-fi/horror bang-bang film from the 80’s and 90’s and references everything from Predator and Robocop to Split Second and Timecop.
Soldier-turned-bar owner “Boss” Ryker, (played by the humorously named Stink Fisher) is sent on one last mission to pull together a squad of space marines and retrieve a stolen alien from some baddies with dodgy accents.

The passing of famed “Blade Runner” actor Rutger Hauer has prompted an outpouring of tributes from filmmakers, actors, and fans on Twitter, honoring a career highlighted by one of the most famous monologues in sci-fi history.
Director Guillermo Del Toro praised Hauer as “an intense, deep, genuine and magnetic actor that brought truth, power and beauty to his films.” “Law and Order: Svu” star Ice-t reflected on the time he worked with Hauer on the action film “Surviving the Game,” while Kiss frontman Gene Simmons posted a picture of a VHS copy of “Wanted Dead or Alive,” in which the rock star played a terrorist being hunted down by a CIA agent played by Hauer.

Exclusive: Solstice Studios, the upstart producer, financier and theatrical distribution venture launched last October by Mark Gill, Andrew Gunn, Guy Botham and Vincent Bruzzese, has targeted its first homegrown picture that will go into production. Deadline hears that Split Second is out to directors, with a plan to begin production later this year. Scripted by former military intelligence officer Mitchell Lafortune, Split Second is an action thriller about an assassin who suffers a psychological break when he is ordered to kill the woman who is his lifeline. The story follows two versions of the same character: one who pulls the trigger and descends into madness, the other who takes the road to redemption and goes on the run with her.
Solstice will make mid-budget films for wide theatrical release. Lafortune is repped by Verve, and managed by Kaplan/Perrone.

Starring Vivica A. Fox as the President of the New United States of America and following a group of military veterans on a deadly mission in space, Crossbreed is coming to On Demand on February 5th from Uncork'd Entertainment. Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, and congratulations on your new movie, Crossbreed! How and when did you and co-writer Robert Thompson come up with the idea for this film?
Brandon Slagle: Thank you very much! The general DNA for Crossbreed has been around for a few years. There was a script called Nebulus I’d written for a Syfy Channel pitch around 2011 that was conceptually similar,...

The closest you’ll get to an R-rated Venom movie this month.
Dick Durkin: I don't think this thing thinks it's Satan, I think this thing Is Satan.
Stone: Well Satan is in deep s***!
Venom is one of the most recognizable comic-book villains of all time, but its fair to say he hasn't had a smooth ride on the big screen. Sam Raimi's noted distaste for the character didn't bode well when the studio insisted he include Venom as an antagonist in Spider-Man 3. While using the symbiote as a means to explore Peter Parker's dark side was intriguing, Topher Grace's take on Venom proved majorly disappointing to many. Raimi has since admitted he just didn't get the appeal of the character, and a planned solo movie was scrapped.
Channing Tatum was rumored to be interested in taking on a Venom movie during The Amazing Spider-Man era,...

Mubi is partnering with the New York Film Festival to present highlights from Projections, a festival program of film and video work that expands upon our notions of what the moving image can do and be. James N. Kienitz Wilkin's Indefinite Pitch (2016), recipient of the festival's Kazuko Trust Award, is showing on Mubi in many countries around the world from October 18 - November 16, 2016.I’ve come to the conclusion that movies always communicate the circumstances in which they were made, and most of the time, these circumstances are unconscious influences. If one identifies with movies, or has dedicated one’s life to, or expects to make a living from, movies, then circumstantially, one's personal ambitions, dreams and memories get riskily exposed. Indefinite Pitch tries to pinpoint this. But not everything can be pinned down. In music, not all instruments make notes with a clear pitch. The rising and falling background...

From The Cabin In The Woods and Ghostbusters through to Pan's Labyrinth: the movie monsters that make a huge impression in their one scene.
Screen monsters come in all shapes and sizes, from the bizarre beauty of Giger’s Alien all the way through to the very human evil of Seven’s John Doe. Audiences have a strange relationship with these creatures, being both repelled and fascinated by them at the same time. This push/pull attraction has been going on since the birth of cinema, and it’s likely to continue for many years to come.
Sometimes the most enduring creatures are the ones that pop up, steal the movie and then swiftly exit stage left. It could be their unique design or the impact they have on the story, but for the monsters included here, all they needed was one scene to impact on our collective nightmares.

Print is a dying breed. Newspapers and magazines are seeing subscriber numbers dwindle in the wake of the digital revolution. Why should folks pay for a physical copy of a publication that may not survive the wrath of a poorly trained paperboy or a malicious mailman when they can get the same content on their mobile device?
Comic book companies, while still selling pretty consistently, are finding ways to adjust to the changing ways folks buy their products. Marvel Comics stands out with their Marvel Unlimited app. For $9.99 a month or $69 a year, subscribers have access to over 17,000 comics and counting. New comics hit every Monday. Comics that are on sale at your local comic book store today will hit Unlimited about six months after they hit shelves. Marvel Unlimited is a great tool for folks that want to dive into the Marvel Universe, yet are hesitant due to not knowing where to start reading.

Marvel Comics jumped on board the Back to the Future train this week and released the cover art for Deadpool and Cable: Split Second #2. It was created by artist Reilly Brown and as you can see, it was obviously inspired by the poster for the classic time-traveling adventure film.
You can read Deadpool and Cable: Split Second #1 right now online if you want. The second issue doesn’t come out until January, so unless you have a time machine to travel into the future, you're just going to have to wait a few more months.

The Slasher boom that caught fire in the late 70’s in North America pulled a lot of ‘inspiration’ in their kills from the Italian Gialli that had gone before ( I’m looking at you, Friday The 13th Part 2), but oddly none adopted the feel or the look from their stylish brethren. That is, until The Burning (1981), a summer camp slaughterhouse produced by a fledgling little company called Miramax. A uniquely nasty little number, The Burning stands apart from many of its campkill cousins with elevated performances, strong direction, and a mood that evokes the best of Argento.
Bob and Harvey Weinstein started Miramax as a way to get into the movie business, coming from a background in music promotion. All signs pointed towards horror as the entry point – you didn’t need stars, and limited locations keep costs down. The Burning was budgeted at 1.5 million, and only brought in half...

As a gamer there are genres that I don’t play as often as others, RPGs being one and racing games the other. When it comes to the latter I tend to find racers that I love and stick with those – games such as Outrun and its sequel, Burnout Paradise, and Split Second (which is Still my all-time favourite racing game). I’ve put hours and hours of game time into both the PS3 version of Outrun 2: Coast to Coast and the Xbox 360 version of Split Second in particular; in fact I’ve been berated more than once for having a quick blast on both games when I should be getting ready for work, should be cooking and even when I should be blogging/reviewing!
However sometime ago I was watching one of my favourite YouTubers, Metal Jesus Rocks, who had produced a video running down some “undiscovered gems...

Death Machine (1994)
Written by: Stephen Norrington
Directed by: Stephen Norrington
Cast: Ely Pouget (Hayden Cale), William Hopkins (John Carpenter), John Sharian (Sam Raimi), Martin McDougall (Yutani), Richard Brake (Scott Ridley), Brad Dourif (Jack Dante)
The early to mid-nineties were an interesting time in horror. To coin a very familiar phrase, “It was the best of times, and the worst of times.” I’ll go with the bad stuff first. Nothing much was happening at the popular theatres in the vein of any quality horror, but on the bright side, we did get some small theatrical release and direct to video gems on VHS. At this point VHS was an established format. The novelty had worn off, but all of these really unique movies that would have never been seen, found a home on the rental shelves. I’ve seen some great ones that still are personal favorites,...

Almost six months after I originally taped my episode of Gsn’s trivia bowl The Chase, I can now divulge what’s crossed my mind at least once a day since that dank August afternoon: I won $38,000 and sneered like Tallulah Bankhead‘s spoiled barista nephew as I did it! It was a thrilling day of questions, answers, nervous energy, and salty badinage. (The show’s resident trivia god Mark Labbett — a.k.a. The Beast — and I exchanged a few quips during the game). Precisely what I wanted out of my game show experience. You’ll be able to catch reruns on Gsn for quite awhile.
It’s been a long time coming, my game show debut. Ever since I was a toddler watching reruns of Split Second, Name That Tune, and Tic Tac Dough on the USA Network, I’ve wanted to be a game show contestant. Competitive people like to show off,...
