Welcome to the 88th Academy Awards from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, where the film industry’s best and whitest gather for the annual celebration of motion picture achievements. It’s been a tight race this year, with several contests still too close to call.
The Revenant is the favourite to win best picture heading into the ceremony, with 12 nominations, however don’t be surprised if Mad Max: Fury Road, The Big Short, or Spotlight spring a surprise.
The backdrop to this evening’s proceedings – along with the foreground and everything above it, below it, to the left and to the right of it – has been dominated by the #OscarsSoWhite outrage, which erupted back in January when, for the second year in a row, all 20 acting nominees were white.
The ensuing maelstrom triggered jerky knees in the Academy, which has moved to alter its composition and the way it does business going forward.
Time will tell. Meanwhile...

David Letterman made America laugh for 33 years as a late-night host, but the really challenge as he closed out his now legendary tenure on Wednesday night was holding back a tear or two.
Letterman, 68, bid his final "Thank you and good night" to viewers after nearly 22 years behind the desk of CBS's Late Show. The 16-time Emmy winner's final show after 6,028 broadcasts was a star-studded extravaganza that still managed to be touching – after all, Letterman has seen incredible highs and lows during the decades that have cemented his reputation as a late-night pioneer.

Washington, Oct 9: Sir Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell were pictured arriving at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in St. Johns Wood, London on the eve before their wedding.
Members of Shevell's family joined the 69-year-old former Beatles member and the 51-year-old American heiress as they attended the breaking of the fast service at 5 p.m.
According to Us Weekly, they left the service two hours later and eluded the question of their rumoured marriage on being asked by a photographer who asked them "Are you looking forward for tomorrow?"
"Good question. Thank you and good night," People magazine quoted McCartney as saying.
The rumoured wedding will be McCartney's third, whose first wife, Linda, died of cancer.

The concept of this series is such: I choose a movie. We all choose our favorite shot(s) from said movie. I link up to everyone's choices each Wednesday. It's an eye candy free for all celebrating those single images in movies that we just can't live without. They're either the prettiest, the most telling, personally resonant, quite unexpected or just plain delightful.
Today's episode: Paul Verhoeven's gaudy masterwork Showgirls (1995). It's loud. It's trashy. It's colorful. It's spectacularly itself. Something all movies should strive to be. So, very briefly, I considered this shot from the opening sequence.
Because the "Huge" graphic makes me giggle. It can't have been an accident that that's the word that flashes in neon just as Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) pulls into Las Vegas. "I'm gonna win."
I almost went with anything from Nomi's first performance like these.
I love how distorted and fleshy the...

The posters for Shrek Forever After may claim that it’s The Final Chapter in the big green ogre’s story, but James isn’t convinced…
Mother of mercy! Is this the end of Shrek? Apparently so, for Shrek Forever After is the closing act of the saga. Once screenings stop we will be officially Shrekless.
The promotional posters have told us that this is the last in the cycle with big green letters - not quite as big as those that proclaim it’s in 3D - that say The Final Chapter. Barring an epilogue or an appendix that means The End, The Conclusion, The Grand Finale, The bit where Porky Pig pops up and says “Th-th-th-th-th-that’s all folks!”
In Japan they’ve dubbed it Sayonara Shrek (I think that means 'Good Bye Shrek'). In Denmark it’s been christened Shreksen: Tak Og God Nat ('Shrek:...
