Romance is dead! Messed Up Puzzles and Cult Epics bring you the first ever series of jigsaw puzzles for necrophiles. When Jorg Buttgereit unleashed Nekromantik on the world in 1987 he set his stall out as being both a controversial and fascinating director, the film crossing several lines of taste and decency and climaxing with one of the most outrageous and bold scenes that I’d seen, and I was a student of the BBFC’s infamous 72 title list of films banned under the Video Recordings Act 1984.

Four years later, he served up the sequel, Nekromantik 2, which not only opened by revisiting the final few minutes of the first one as part of the credit sequence, but further cemented his reputation as a true horror cinematic maverick.

Nekromantik 2 is a bizarre film, part shock fest and part fairy tale, as it tells the story of Monika (Monika M), a pretty grave robber who digs up the corpse of the first movie’s protagonist Rob in order to carry on a relationship with it.

After the Arrow Film release of Nekromantik it was only a matter of time before Nekromantik 2 made its way onto Blu-ray. Another banned movie featuring people with an infatuation with the dead, this one takes things a little more extreme, if that was even possible.

When Monika (Monika M.) meets Mark (Mark Reeder) they soon become lovers, but this causes problems for the nurse. While Mark is handsome and trustworthy, the corpse is a better lover. How can she decide between the two?

Nekromantik 2 feels very much like the first film but with a bigger budget. This time though there is a satirical edge to the film which makes fun of the art film style with which it actually embraces at the same time.

While many general moviegoers are skeptical of the horror genre’s past/future, I see no need for panic. Mainstream horror seems to be shambling along aimlessly, as studios churn out an endless heap of assembly-line-produced procedurals based on some type of existing property (sequels, reboots, game-based movies), but the horror genre is alive and thriving if you know where to look.

Y’all can argue about the meaning of Deathwave until you turn blue in the face, whether you hate the term or dig it, because despite classification qualms, there’s no denying an influx of horror movies with substance, vitality, and an all-encompassing cinematic meatiness. Alas, these titles are certainly much harder to find than big-budget remakes, and while a few stumble onto Netflix’s streaming catalog out of blind luck, general horror audiences rarely discover a movie like Stitches until years later.

Scream Factory is pulling double-duty with both of their dual Blu-ray releases, Love at First Bite/Once Bitten and Vampire’s Kiss/High Spirits, and the cult classic Nekromantik 2 is getting a high def upgrade as well.

Jörg Buttgereit’s notoriously moist horror/gore film Nekromantik (1987) has been churning stomachs for two and a half decades. In honor of this German film’s 25th anniversary, a new DVD release is planned for May 2013 by Titan Video. While this news may excite many a die-hard gore-hound, the film is a tough sell to many other horror fans. Nekromantik - still banned in numerous countries around the globe - has a tendency to upset and nauseate its viewers… whether they adore or deplore the movie.

The film is about a young couple, Rob and Betty, who gain sexual satisfaction from the use of human remains. Rob has a job removing dead bodies and body parts from public areas. Thanks to this grisly career, Rob and Betty have a constant supply of human pieces. One day Rob comes home with an entire corpse, and it becomes the couple’s obsession.

The 9th annual Lausanne Underground Film Festival may just run for a mere five days in Switzerland on Oct. 20-24, but it hits with the force of a 10p-ton megaton bomb over that time period, packing in so much mind-boggling underground madness it’ll make your head explode.

Every year, the fest feels like 5 or 6 festivals crammed into one. There’s the fest that pays homage to the history of experimental filmmaking, there are the retrospectives of several cult festivals, a feature film competition section, a short film competition section and more.

Three filmmakers are especially getting major retrospective love this year. First, there’s legendary Canadian experimental filmmaker Michael Snow who will be in attendance at screenings of his classic films Wavelength, <–> and La région centrale, plus several of his other short films.

I was always going to have a soft spot for the retro horror pastiche The House of the Devil. After all, the schlocky slashers that it references and mimics with casual flair are the films I grew up on; tales of feisty babysitters cast adrift amid suburban satanic cults, involving long, slow build-ups interspersed with brief bouts of insane blood-spattering violence. It helps that director Ti West appears to be both a fan and a film-maker – which is more than can be said of the dunderheads behind the string of 70s and 80s slasher reboots that have recently troubled our multiplexes. While the (re)makers of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and its ilk have churned out lobotomised jittery trash for the Twitter generation, The House of the Devil is so lovingly old-fashioned in its pacing that viewers under 40 may well start to wonder when the hell anything is going to happen.

The Final Girl: A Few Thoughts on Feminism and Horror By Donato Totaro

One of the more important, if not groundbreaking, accounts/recuperations of the horror film from a feminist perspective is the 1993 Carol Clover's "Men, Women, and Chainsaws". One of the book's major points concerns the structural positioning of what she calls the Final Girl in relation to spectatorship. While most theorists label the horror film as a male-driven/male-centered genre, Clover points out that in most horror films, especially the slasher film, the audience, male and female, is structurally 'forced' to identify with the resourceful young female (the Final Girl) who survives the serial attacker and usually ends the threat (until the sequel anyway.) So while the narratively dominant killer's subjective point of view may be male within the narrative,the male viewer is still rooting for the Final Girl to overcome the killer. We can see this...
