What are some of the movies that come to mind if somebody mentions the word “siblings”? To be specific, movies with plots that hinge on the sibling dynamic instead of just having siblings in it. If you pick from the crime drama genre, there are Deewar, A Better Tomorrow, and Fiza. If you move towards the action genre, there’s Main Hoon Na, Karan Arjun, and Warrior. If you look at horror films, you’ll get Crimson Peak, Evil Dead Rise, and Nope. If fantasy is your thing, then there’s The Chronicles of Narnia franchise, the Spy Kids franchise, and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. If you are wondering about step siblings, then you have Cruel Intentions and Step Brothers. And if you want to go into the realm of taboo, you can try out Close My Eyes. Now, even though it may seem like the...

When news broke in early February that Mariah Carey had booked a return ticket to Las Vegas to mount another residency, it was revealed that she would design the set list as a celebration of her 2005 blockbuster album, The Emancipation of Mimi.
It inspired the title of the exclusive run — The Celebration of Mimi — as well as the timing. Carey took the stage at Park MGM’s Dolby Live to launch the 16-date residency on April 12, 2024, exactly 19 years to the day after the album was released. It’s no surprise Carey wanted to commemorate the 14-track effort, which sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and brought the elusive chanteuse back into familiar territory at the top of the charts. The success of Emancipation of Mimi was fueled by the No. 1 smash “We Belong Together” and punctuated by singles “It’s Like That,” “Shake It Off,” “Get Your Number,” “Don’t Forget About Us,...

It’s always been pretty obvious that George Lucas made Star Wars up as he went along. Come on, Luke starts out as a wide-eyed farm boy and ends up as a dead-eyed Jedi. Darth Vader begins as a shiny black death cyborg villain and somehow winds up as Luke’s dear old wet-eyed dad. Let’s not even mention Leia going from love interest to sibling, because if it hadn’t been for the Force, this might have been the weirdest movie since Close My Eyes.
All of which makes the revelation that Jodie Foster was once offered the role of Leia Organa all the more intriguing. Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Foster revealed this week that she turned down...

There is a moment forty minutes into Joe Wright’s Cyrano where everything kicks up a notch. As a military regiment practices their swordcraft on a stunning pier in Sicily the titular Cyrano de Bergerac (Peter Dinklage) crafts an agreement with new recruit Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr.). He will write beautiful poetry as correspondence to Roxanne (Haley Bennett) from Christian—who lacks the words—thereby espousing his own love for the same woman. “I will make you eloquent while you make me handsome,” Cyrano explains, convinced they do not live in a world wherein someone like him could be with someone like her. Christian breaks into song and the camera runs away, darting through the regiment training on the pier. Soon enough we cut above the action, taking in the pier and the seas that surround it. The sequence is exhilarating and the film’s pace does not slow from there.

There was something moving and even poignant in watching the MGM Lion logo roaring once again at the opening of director Joe Wright’s new musical adaptation of Cyrano last night at the Telluride Film Festival, where this lovely new telling of the classic story of Cyrano de Bergerac had its world premiere. Both MGM and de Bergerac have had a storied history in show business, and both are still very alive through a series of reincarnations. MGM in its golden era was the movie musical factory, but it has been some time since the studio has taken on one of this scale. It is just like old times, eh? Fortunately, this Cyrano is worthy of that tradition — and then some.
Wright, no stranger to period pieces like Pride & Prejudice, Darkest Hour, Atonement and Anna Karenina, has brought almost a simplicity and quiet dignity to his first musical film.

Generations makes a strong case that Arcade Fire’s second most famous Butler brother, Will, could be the group’s pop mastermind with its quirky, upbeat rockers about modern life. He opens the record with “Outta Here,” which he built with fuzzy analog keyboards and smartypants lyrics like, “Had enough bad news/Had enough of your generation.” It recalls Eno and Bowie in its synthiness but also Spoon in its sunny determination. “Close My Eyes” feels a bit like Suicide pretending to be a power-pop band with its quivering keys...

Arcade Fire’s Will Butler has shared a new song and video, “Close My Eyes,” from his upcoming solo album, Generations, out September 25th via Merge.
The song has a breezy, bouncing pop groove that opens up into a lush chorus that places Butler’s voice against a wall of backing harmonies. “I know you’re gonna come around and stand by me,” Butler sings, “But I’m tired of standing while the world’s dissolving/Close my eyes, close my eyes, close my eyes/And it’s almost alright.

Chicago – Prior to embarking on her highly successful solo career and becoming the queen of 1980s metal, Lita Ford was the lead guitarist of the aggressive, female rock band The Runaways in the 1970s. From playing heavy riffs on “Cherry Bomb” to a duet with the infamous Ozzy Osbourne on the song “Close My Eyes Forever,” Ford has seen and done it all in her 40 years in rock and roll.
She took a break from her current book tour for “Living Like a Runaway” to answer a few questions from HollywoodChicago.com’s Jeff Doles.

Heartbreaking. Alan Rickman, one of the UK's most treasured showbiz mainstays has passed away at the age of 69. Though he occassionally dabbled in directing (The Winter Guest and A Little Chaos) he was best known as an actor of stage, tv, and big screen. He's inarguably best known and beloved for the many years as Professor Snapes in the Harry Potter series. But for me, his career always makes me nostalgic for the early 90s. His career was energized by the success of Die Hard which led to a bunch of movies.
When I saw Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) I was shocked that any film could contain so many performances that were all over the map in terms of quality - a chaos of acting styles and fumbles but he was always fun hamming it up as the Sherrif of Nottingham. I immediately typecast him as a villain. A...

The year 1991 is the focus for our latest underappreciated films list, which includes dramas, thrillers, and a smattering of horror...
Ah, 1991. The year Robert Patrick ran after cars in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and Kevin Costner grew a spectacular mullet for Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. But outside the top ten blockbuster list, there lies an entire world of other, less celebrated films to discover.
Some of the movies on this list have been included because they were overlooked in theatres, while others have been added because they were unfairly dismissed by critics. One or two others were modest successes, but (whisper it) we decided to include them anyway because we really, really like them.
So here, for your delectation, is our pick of 25 underappreciated films from 1991.
25. Deceived
You think Goldie Hawn, you tend to think comedy, or her Oscar-nominated turn in Private Benjamin.

I’m confused. Did Pax Dickinson not expect to get fired for this?
The CW is importing the Canadian sitcom Seed to air in the U.S. “Seed tells the story of Harry (Adam Korson), an underachieving bachelor/bartender who is also a sperm donor. Harry reluctantly begins a relationship with three separate recipient families – a laid-back lesbian couple with a 9-year-old son, a neurotically hopeful single mom-to-be and an uptight, upper-class family with a rebellious teenage daughter – with whom he’ll come to share more than just his DNA.” I know the show has already aired in Canada, so what do our Canadian readers think of it?
Congrats to Rafael Nadal, who I’m informed won his second U.

Starz has been looking to the UK for programming recently. Its historical drama "The White Queen," which premiered two weeks ago, is a co-production with BBC One, "Da Vinci's Demons" is a BBC Worldwide co-production and the network is working with Sky Atlantic on a 2014 Arctic murder mystery entitled "Fortitude." The premium channel's next program also hails from the UK -- it'll be home to the U.S. premiere of "Dancing on the Edge," a five-part BBC miniseries set in 1930s London and centered around a group of black jazz musicians. Chiwetel Ejiofor, soon to be seen in a very Oscar-friendly lead role in Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave," stars in the drama alongside Matthew Goode, Jacqueline Bisset and John Goodman. Stephen Poliakoff ("Close My Eyes") wrote and directed the miniseries, which will premiere on Saturday, October 19th at 10pm after the finale of "The White Queen" and will...

He has unparalleled creative freedom within the BBC. But, as Stephen Poliakoff's latest lavish drama reaches our screens, what does he make of his reputation for being a control freak?
'I'm quite sure," Stephen Poliakoff giggles, "there are people within the BBC who run down the corridors blocking their ears when they see me coming." His reputation certainly precedes him – a great galloping colossus of media folklore, variously casting the writer as a genius, control freak, force of nature or diva, sometimes all at the same time. Descriptions of his appearance err towards cartoonish caricature – dishevelled, wild-haired, fidgety, like a mad professor who has accidentally electrocuted himself – only adding to the mythology of a wild man of letters. But to everyone about to fall in love with his latest drama, Poliakoff may well soon be at real risk of becoming a national treasure.

Saturday evening saw the final show from Saregama’s Celebrating the Legends UK tour in London, at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo, headlined by Roop Kumar Rathod and Sunali Rathod. Presented as a tribute show to Indian musical legends Mohammad Rafi, Talat Mahmood, Noor Jahan and the nightingale of India – Lata Mangeshkar, the house full audience had already come along with high expectations and nostalgia, but nothing prepared us for the absolutely amazing talent, charm, wisdom and stage presence of Roop Kumar Rathod.

During my senior year in high school, I took a trip to Panama City, Florida in the hopes of joining the ridiculous spectacle that is spring break. It wasn't quite the hyper-sexualized booze and drug-filled event that I was expecting to see, but it was close. Granted, at the time, my expectations were sky high, having learned everything about spring break from those ridiculous "Girls Gone Wild" commercials they would play on Comedy Central after midnight. In fact, what I expected to see was something along the lines of what goes down in “Spring Breakers,” this year's biggest shitshow of a film (and I don't mean that as a negative). The movie follows four hard-partying college girls who will do whatever it takes -- including robbing a diner -- to make enough money to go on spring break, where they can drink and snort coke and shoot guns and have sex (seriously,...

The 47-year-old found success with the ITV series "Chancer" in 1990. He then went on to do movies like "Close My Eyes", "Closer" and "Croupier".

The Queen of the wicked shit, Razakel, has returned with a brand new full-length album featuring 22 tracks of the sickest horrorcore to ever grace the genre. Easily this is the best produced horrorcore release I have heard to date, showcasing some authentically mind blowing lyrics, proving once and for all who the illest female Mc of them all truly is. “Muerta” officially dropping on July 31st, is by far Razakel’s most solid contribution to the genre, over the years she has mastered her craft to a degree that makes her stand out above other similar artists. Just like every other Skr release this record further innovates the genre, rising the bar multiple notches, creating the new standard for quality horrorcore.

If actor Clive Owen ever finds himself at a loose end, Andrew has a few film pitches which he thinks will be a perfect fit…
Described as potentially “one note” in Empire Magazine (with the qualifying comment of “it's a bloody good note and nobody else could play it better”), Clive Owen is more versatile than many give him credit for.
After a varied career in film, stage and television with appearances of note in Chancer, Close My Eyes, the original theatrical version of Closer, and 1997's double-header of Croupier and Bent, he reached the big time in with a very strong run of films (from Sin City in 2005 through to Shoot 'Em Up in 2007). Since then he has alternated between more obviously commercial work such as Duplicity and Killer Elite with more personal, human dramas such as Intruders and The Boys are Back.

Clive Owen is a respected actor, who starred in a number of acclaimed theater productions in the U.K. before going on to become a major TV star, thanks to Stephen Poliakoff's "Close My Eyes" and the popular TV series "Chancer." After starring in Mike Hodges' surprise hit "Croupier," he became a fully-fledged movie star too, with supporting roles in "The Bourne Identity" and "Gosford Park" turning into lead roles, opposite Angelina Jolie in "Beyond Borders," in Robert Rodriguez's "Sin City," and an Oscar-nominated turn in "Closer." He even starred in one of the very best films of the last decade, Alfonso Cuaron's astonishing dystopia "Children of Men." But things haven't been so great of late. Starring vehicles like "Duplicity," "The International" and "The Boys Are Back" underwhelmed, and even a decent performance in an underrated film like...

A flirtatious tradie, a flustered photographer, a gang of flaming skateboarders, a rock band with disabilities and a Caravaggio painting made from beer drinkers all helped decorate Australia’s most prized ad directors. Robin Hicks interviews.
Garth Davis, Exit Films
Garth Davis went all the way to Mexico to shoot Ride, a long-form commercial for Coca-Cola’s new energy drink, Burn. Los Angeles had been an option for the cityscapes he wanted, but there was no way he could have got away with setting fire to skateboarders on busy city streets there.
Davis won a film lion and also a film craft lion at Cannes for a raw, smokey four minute video in which a gang of skateboarders race on motorways, dodge cars and jump off buildings with their clothing in flames.
A team of body fire experts were brought in from La for the shoot, which took just over a week.

Finally! We feel like we’ve been waiting forever to hear about the decadence that is Mariah Carey’s baby nurseries. Luckily Mimi and husband Nick Cannon didn’t dissapoint, dropping $100,000 on their kids’ rooms, including a $30,000 crib. “Everything matches, but pieces are individualized to celebrate the twins as separate entities,” the mom-to-be explained, opting to go with gender-neutral green for her son and daughter. “I feel like I’m bringing two individuals into the world, so I wanted to do more than cookie-cutter styles in blue and pink.” Besides, green will complement Mariah’s twins’ diamond iPods really nicely.
Carey designed their New York nursery with decorator Mario Buatta, but tapped designer Gail Sedigh for their L.A. baby digs. “The ceiling has orangey-pink clouds in a blue sky with golden stars twinkling. It’s based on two songs I wrote that are fan favorites: ‘Underneath the Stars’ and ”Close My Eyes,...

Mariah Carey has revealed that she is in awe of the nursery she has created for her forthcoming twin babies. The singer, who is expecting a boy and a girl with husband Nick Cannon, said that she "loves" the room that she's decorated for them. She told Life & Style: "I wanted to create a beautiful, tranquil, cosy environment for the babies. Everything matches, but pieces are individualised to celebrate the twins as separate entities. "The ceiling has orangey-pink clouds in a blue sky with golden stars twinkling. It's based on two songs I wrote that are fan favourites, 'Underneath the Stars' and 'Close My Eyes'. What should the "American Idol" Top 10 sing for the R&B/Soul week? Make your picks here.
Even though Usher kinda spilled the "Idol" mentoring beans over the weekend, it was officially announced during the Wednesday, March 24 results show that he would be mentoring the Top 10 for R&B/Soul week.
We love that R&B/Soul reaches way back into Motown because some of the non-Michael Lynche singers need some oldies thrown in there.
The song list is available here, but here is the whole list:

Nathaniel: Hey, kids. It's probably not sane to "tape-delay" blog the BAFTAs -- you probably already know who one, actually -- but this blog isn't exactly of sound mind during awards season (or, ahem, otherwise). I haven't heard about the winners yet. The second I opened a browser I sensed spoilers from all corners so I had to look away. Why doesn't the BBC-America broadcast it live? It's not like anyone who cares wouldn't watch it in the afternoon on a Sunday. But if you've already heard who won on the internet wouldn't that cut down your desire to tune in and thus lower the ratings? I don't get it. So that they could rerun broadcass of nature documentary Life of Mammals? I don't really care about the sharpness of a squirrel's front teeth or how kangaroo rats (omg. idon'tevenknow whatthoseare and I Don't Want To Know) store their seeds.

Ozzy Osbourne turns 61 years old today. The godfather of modern metal, Ozzy first grabbed attention as the creepy, theatrical frontman of Black Sabbath, still one of the heaviest bands in rock history. Of course, Ozzy is probably best known to modern audiences as a reality show star (MTV's smash hit "The Osbournes") and as a solo artist (his hit "Crazy Train" remains a staple at sports arenas, rock-themed karaoke bars and air guitar contests worldwide).
It's nothing short of miraculous that Ozzy has made it this far. He had a legendarily massive drug and alcohol habit during his youth, and though he's clean now, it remains a constant struggle. In one of the great rock and roll stories of all time, Osbourne was on tour with Mötley Crüe when he spied a row of ants following the trail of a melted popsicle. In a stunt that seems apocryphal but appears to be true,...

For the unaware, www.horrorcore.com is one of the largest outlets of the horrorcore/wicked shit musical genres the online market has to offer. For nearly a decade the site has played host to some of the most promising horrorcore veterans and prospects alike. Horrorcore powerhouses such as Mars, Menacide, Psycho Jesus, Kid Crusher, Q-Strange, and Insane Poetry have all been known to frequent the website, as well as quite a few of those future shiners like J.Hexx, bOb e. NiTe, and CrAkD (to name a few).
Well, back in 2003, the aforementioned Menacide launched what would become an annual horrorcore.com tradition; each Halloween a collection of the best holiday themed music the site has to offer would be compiled into one mass collection and released under the Devilz Nite moniker. Over the years some excellent work has graced the Devilz Nite compilations; terrific appearances from the likes of Sinister X,...

He's our Paul Schrader, on an idiosyncratic journey, so why haven't my Us friends heard of Poliakoff?
Whenever my American friends ask me to name a good English director they've not heard of, I always push them towards the work of Stephen Poliakoff, whose Glorious 39 arrives this week. And those who take up my recommendation/challenge usually come back about three weeks later, after a bracing immersion in whatever traces of Poliakoff can be found in La's video stores, filled with gratitude and suddenly obsessed with Poliakoff's recurring themes: ancient family secrets, the power of images and documents to realign our understanding of histories both national and familial, and London as a city of secrets, forever yielding up surprises and shocks from its subterranean depths and farthest-flung outer suburbs; all somehow viewed by Poliakoff with the fresh-peeled eyeballs of a newly landed immigrant.

Clive Owen Gets Back

Clive Owen is one of those actors that keep surprising you. Just when you think the audience, and the Hollywood establishment, has pegged him as an action hero, a leading man, or a romantic comedy pin-up, Owen pulls an about-face and does something unexpected.
It all started October 3, 1964 in Coventry, England. Owen’s father, a country music singer, abandoned the family when he was just three. His mother later remarried, with Clive and his four brothers raised by his mother and stepfather, who worked for British Rail. Owen has characterized those early years as "rough." A self-described “solidly working class” kid, Owen was bitten by the acting bug at age 13 and followed his dream to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art several years later. Initially cutting his teeth on high-profile British television programs such as “Chancer” and “Sharman,” as well as art house...

Clive Owen has made a career out of playing brooding loners, yet he never seems to be repeating himself. Even his hesitant heroes bear little resemblance to one another. His indestructible Sin City character will never be confused with his cartoon antihero in Shoot 'Em Up or his weary Everyman reluctantly saving the world in Children of Men. If there's a common thread to his roles--including the brilliant bank robber in Inside Man, the cuckolded husband in Closer, and Sir Walter Raleigh in Elizabeth: The Golden Age--it's an intelligence and an air of sophistication that Owen can't help but bring to every role he plays. His smooth confidence had many clamoring for Owen to inherit the mantle of James Bond, a role he claims he was never offered before Daniel Craig assumed the title. This seems inconceivable, as the character would have fit Owen as snugly as an Armani tux,...

Arthur Russell was a master musician with an impressive ear for everything from mutant disco to boppy pop to solo cello koans, but most devastating of his many devastating attributes was his voice. It's devastating not only because he's gone—he died of AIDS-related illness in 1992—but also because he always sounded so piercing and intimate that he could make listeners shy and sheepish, no matter the context. His voice sounds bare and unadorned on Love Is Overtaking Me, another terrific offering to add to the Russell reissues and compilations that have piled up over the past few years. This one collects unreleased songs that slot somewhere in a realm triangulated by folk, country, and '80s college-rock. "Close My Eyes" finds Russell singing about corn and strumming a guitar to startling emotional effect, while the buoyant "Hey! How Does Everybody Know" features him tossing through enough warm-hearted...
