Michael Biehn, who starred in James Cameron’s iconic 1980s movies The Terminator and Aliens, is returning to studio movies.

The actor has spent the past couple of decades working in the low-budget thriller space outside the Hollywood mainstream, but has now joined the growing cast of Onslaught, the action thriller that Adam Wingard is directing for A24.

Reginald VelJohnson, the Family Matters actor who is also remembered for his role in action classic Die Hard, and comedian Eric Wareheim (Tim & Eric) have also signed for the feature, which gets underway this month.

Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company are also backing the picture, which stars Adria Arjona and has Wingard favorite Dan Stevens and Queer actor Drew Starkey in the cast. UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Alex “Poatan” Pereira is also in negotiations to join the project.

Leonard Asper’s Anthem Sports and Entertainment has acquired Hollywood Suite, an indie Canadian broadcaster of four HD movie channels.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but, pending regulatory approvals, Anthem will pick up the commercial-free movie channels with mostly Hollywood titles themed from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, and distributed into 10 million homes across Canada.

Classic Hollywood movies on the Hollywood Suite menu include Tom Cruise’s Cocktail, The Abyss, the Tom Hanks comedy Turner & Hooch and Billy Wilder’s The Seven Year Itch, starring Marilyn Monroe.

Disney+ gave its home page a makeover to celebrate the launch of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” on the streamer.

For one day only, the home page will take inspiration from each of the Taylor Swift eras for special featured collections, dividing Disney+ and Hulu titles into their appropriate category. Nine of the eras are listed, with her debut self-titled album mysteriously absent.

The “Fearless (Disney’s Version)” collection includes heroic and brave adventures like “Moana,” “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” “Brave,” “The Marvels” and “Limitless with Chris Hemsworth” to name a few.

“Speak Now (Disney’s Version)” focuses on enchantment, princesses and dragons with stories like “The Princess Diaries,” “Enchanted” and “The Princess Bride.”

With the launch of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” on Disney+ on March 14 at 6 p.m. Pt, the megastar is getting a homepage takeover on the streamer. For one day only, the service’s main screen will feature nine curated sets of titles inspired by each of the singer’s eras — including “Fearless” (e.g. “Moana”), “1989” (e.g. “The Little Mermaid”) and “Midnights” (e.g. “Cinderella”).

Paramount Global’s streaming service Paramount+ is removing some international original content across its markets and will not debut some planned programming sourced outside the U.S. as part of the entertainment giant’s goal of “managing costs” and “maximizing content with the biggest impact,” including a focus on big U.S. studio franchises and a reduction in local, international originals.

On Wednesday, Paramount+ in foreign markets started removing such international original fare as the film At Midnight, starring Top Gun: Maverick breakout Monica Barbaro, Brazilian series Marcelo, Marmelo, Martelo, and U.K. drama No Escape.

For us 90s kids, Dick Tracy was an interesting monster of a movie. It seemed to take a lot of cues from Tim Burton’s Batman, which was released the previous summer, but it definitely had a distinct voice of its own. Dick Tracy was another classic pulp adaptation of an urban enforcer that had very dynamic visuals and an over-the-top rogues gallery. It even sported a score by Danny Elfman, which would have his signature atmospheric sound. The movie would introduce a generation of young audiences to the 1930’s film noir/ detective movie genre. Additionally, the movie brought back Warren Beatty after a three-year absence when his last film, 1987’s Ishtar, was a big flop. Having a star like Beatty in a big-budget franchise like this was an enormous asset for the re-budding intellectual property. And the star power wouldn’t even stop there.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Disney+ announced today that it will not move forward with a second season of the action-fantasy series American Born Chinese. The decision to cancel the series comes seven months after Disney debuted the eight-episode series on its streaming service, Disney+. The cancelation is raising a red flag for fans of the series, as Disney tends to purge content from Disney+ to save money and digital real estate. We’ve seen the mouse-eared streamer purge content before, with shows like Willow, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and more. According to Deadline, options on the cast expired yesterday. However, there could be a silver lining to this disappointing news. 20th Television still plans to shop the series to other outlets, giving the show a chance to live again through another platform.

Disney+ has decided not to pick up a completed TV series adaptation of the imaginative The Spiderwick Chronicles book series, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The six-episode series from Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, a division of Disney, is being shopped to other possible buyers.

Disney touted the adaptation of the books of the same name by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black as “a modern coming-of-age story combined with fantasy adventure” when the project was first unveiled in Nov. 2021, with Jack Dylan Grazer, Joy Bryant, Mychala Lee, Christian Slater, Lyon Daniels and Noah Cottrell set for the ensemble cast and Kat Coiro to direct two episodes.

The popular children’s book series The Spiderwick Chronicles — which has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 32 languages — was adapted into a 2008 Paramount movie.

There will be no third season for Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. Disney+ has canceled the series after two seasons, Deadline has confirmed.

The move comes five months after all 10 episodes of Season 2 of the coming-of-age medical half-hour dramedy launched on the streamer.

Created and executive produced by Kourtney Kang, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. followed the adventures of Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha (Lee), a 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager in modern-day Hawaiʻi.

The cast of the series, a reboot of the popular ’90s medical drama Doogie Howser, M.D. starring Neil Patrick Harris, also included Jason Scott Lee, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Matthew Sato, Wes Tian, Emma Meisel, Mapuana Makia and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman. Ronny Chieng, Alex Aiono and the late Al Harrington recurred in Season 1.

Garth Craven, the British-born sound and film editor and second-unit director whose credits included six Sam Peckinpah features, as well as Turner and Hooch, My Best Friend’s Wedding and Legally Blonde, has died. He was 84.

A resident of Malibu, Craven died May 20 after he suffered a medical emergency while flying back to Los Angeles from a safari in Namibia, his daughter, Willow Kalatchi, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Craven collaborated with the maverick director Peckinpah on Straw Dogs (1971), The Getaway (1972), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), The Killer Elite (1975) and Convoy (1978).

He worked with fellow editor Roger Spottiswoode on the first three of those films, and when Spottiswoode graduated to director, they partnered on the features Shoot to Kill (1988), Turner and Hooch (1989) and Air America (1990) and on two HBO telefilms: 1989’s Third Degree Burn and 1993’s And the Band Played On.

Film and sound editor Garth Craven, who edited films including “Legally Blonde” and got his start in film editing with Sam Peckinpah’s “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid,” died May 20 in Barcelona. He was 84.

His death was only recently announced by his daughter Willow.

Craven not only worked in the cutting room but also in sound departments and served as second unit director on several films. At the beginning of his career, Craven worked on Federico Fellini’s fantasy drama “Satyricon” (1969) in the sound editing department, which served as his introduction to filmmaking.

Back in England, he continued working on films in London. Resuming his work in the sound department, Craven received a BAFTA for the critically acclaimed romantic drama “The Go-Between” (1971) directed by Joseph Losey.

He eventually became a frequent collaborator and friend of Peckinpah. Craven worked as a sound consultant on “The Getaway,” a sound editor on “Straw Dogs,...

Watching it in 2023, one might find themselves a little baffled as to why Martin Brest's 1984 crime comedy "Beverly Hills Cop" was such a massive success. Made for a modest $13 million, "Beverly Hills Cop" caused a sensation, earning over $234 million domestically which is, when adjusted for inflation, closer to $700 million. It made Eddie Murphy a household name and more or less codified an emerging genre of R-rated buddy cop movies that would remain ascendant throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. The success of "Beverly Hills Cop" might confuse people, however, as it seems wildly basic these days. The jokes are not particularly funny, and while Murphy is as charismatic as they come, his Snobs vs. Slobs shtick seems trite and tired.

In the new season of the Seventies workplace comedy Minx, Joyce Prigger’s fortunes couldn’t be more on the rise. The titular magazine, which pairs feminist journalism with full frontal male photo spreads, is thriving, turning Joyce into a minor celebrity who hobnobs with Linda Ronstadt, Gloria Steinem, and other icons of the period. When Rolling Stone comes to profile her (in an episode with more than a whiff of Almost Famous), she admits to the reporter that getting everything she wants has only left her fearing that it can all be taken away.

Movies and TV shows regularly come and go from streaming services; we all know this, but the trend has taken a disturbing turn in the past year, with content being pulled, sometimes permanently, just to save a few bucks. I know, it’s just business, but for the hundreds of creatives who have had their hard-work yanked from existence, it hurts. Disney+ has taken things to a new level as they have pulled Crater from the service, a movie which was released on May 12th… less than two months ago.

There’s no official word on why Crater was removed from Disney+, but The Independent believes that it’s “an attempt to cut costs relating to licencing deals.” The decision has sparked an outcry on social media, with some wondering why they’re paying for the service that can’t even keep their own content.

Following the cancellations of ABC’s “Alaska Daily” and “The Company You Keep” in May, both series are being pulled off Hulu as part of Disney’s ongoing review and removal of content in an effort to cut costs.

The shows, which were initially set to remain on the streamer until September, will now be removed next month. However, they will still be available through iTunes and Amazon.

Other impacted shows include the Rashida Jones comedy “Angie Tribeca,” NBC’s “Blindspot,” Samantha Bee and Jason Jones’ “The Detour” and TNT’s “The Last Ship,” which will be removed on July 1.

Eliza Skinner had no idea that her Disney+ series Earth to Ned would be permanently taken off the platform until a text on the show’s writer group chat in mid-May shared an article about Disney removing more than 70 films and series from its streaming services that month. Among the disappearing titles was the comedic talk show — which launched in 2020 with Skinner as head writer — centering on an alien welcoming celebrities to his spaceship.

Due to its classification as a streaming variety series, Skinner says the writers and performers weren’t receiving residuals, although the show’s team had heard rumors blaming Disney’s tax bill. But while her loss isn’t a financial one, Earth to Ned can no longer serve as a calling card to help land future gigs for Skinner, who also doesn’t own a physical copy of the show.

The entire media landscape is in a serious transition period right now. Yes, streaming is the future (and that is why the Writer's Guild of America is on strike right now), but that future is probably going to look more like traditional TV than anyone thought a handful of years ago. 

Part of that has to do with ad-supported, video-on-demand services (AVOD) such as Tubi, which have become quite popular in recent years -- particularly for those of us who are tired of paying for any number of subscription-based services such as Netflix. Disney is set to take a $1.5 billion write-down during the fiscal third quarter after the entertainment giant removed more than 30 shows off of Disney+ and Hulu last month in an effort to bring down costs, according to a Friday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

On May 26, Disney pulled shows like The World According to Jeff Goldblum, Y: The Last Man, The Mighty Ducks, Turner & Hooch, Willow, Maggie, Dollface and the 2022 Cheaper By the Dozen off of its streaming services. During the company’s May earnings call, Disney CFO Christine McCarthy said the company expected to take on upwards of $1.8 billion in impairment charges as a result of removing the content.

Friday’s SEC filing said Disney is “continuing its review” and is expecting to remove additional produced content from its streaming services during the third quarter, with those removals expected to incur an additional $400 million write-down.

Disney made it official with an SEC filing after the markets closed Friday, confirming it would take $1.5 billion in write-downs associated with removing streaming programming from its platforms.

The number came in on the low end of a range provided by the company last month when it released its quarterly earnings. (Read the new filing Here.) Like other media companies, Disney has been looking to trim expenses in the once-fevered streaming arena, and removing programming has been one means of reaching that goal. Rival service Max, the outlet recently rebranded by Warner Bros Discovery, has also drawn scrutiny for shedding a number of high-profile titles, though the removals are part of the larger reckoning with the daunting economics of streaming. Well, this is just depressing. It was reported last week that Disney would start removing content from their streaming services, and the first casualties have been revealed. The dozens of TV shows and specials from Disney+ and Hulu that will be removed on May 26th include Willow, Big Shot, Y: The Last Man, and many more. Considering that Willow premiered on Disney+ less than a year ago… it hurts.

Updated with more titles being removed: Disney is starting to pull content from streaming, with dozens of series and specials slated to leave Disney+ and Hulu on May 26, Deadline has learned. The titles, which are being removed from Disney’s streaming services globally, include Disney+’s Willow, Big Shot, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Just Beyond, Diary of a Future President, The Mysterious Benedict Society and The World According to Jeff Goldblum and Hulu’s Y: The Last Man, Dollface, The Hot Zone, Maggie, Pistol and Little Demon. A number of Freeform series also are slated to leave Hulu.

The list features largely short-lived series, specials and direct-to-streaming movies.

The move, which comes with a content impairment charge of $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion, was announced during the recent Disney earnings call on May 10.

Actor Drake Bell, best known for co-starring in Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh, has been found safe after being declared “missing and endangered” by the Daytona Beach Police Department.

As per the Dbpd’s post on Facebook just this morning, “Officers are looking for Jared Bell”, referring to Bell’s real name (his middle name is Drake). They also wrote that Drake Bell’s last known whereabouts before going missing were potentially near a high school just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Officials said that he is likely traveling in a BMW. The situation has garnered such media attention that the department had to assure followers the story was real, confirming, “For those asking, this is a legitimate post from the Daytona Beach Police Department.” As of publication, the initial post had more than 1,000 comments.

The police department’s specific noting of the high school location may sound alarms to some.

Big Brother Canada has announced its plans to replace live feeds with an edited daily segment, upsetting fans. However, the US version probably won’t follow suit.

Big Brother Canada shocked the Bb community when it announced its plans to replace the 24/7 live feeds with Digital Dailies, beginning in the upcoming season 11. The Dailies will consist of “uncut content from inside the Bbcan house” and will be released weekly throughout the season.

As it’s only a selected portion of the content caught on camera, many fans are concerned that producers will remove anything that doesn’t paint their houseguests in a good light to reduce controversy.

In Robert Zemeckis' 1994 film "Forrest Gump," Tom Hanks plays Forrest, a good-hearted but low-intelligence rube who, thanks to impeccably constructed American institutions, stumbles repeatedly into athletic, financial, and military success. Forrest is friendly, strong, and hapless, happy to tell his life story to anyone who sits on the bus bench next to him. Hanks won an Academy Award for playing Forrest, and the film itself won four additional Oscars, including Best Picture. Years later, many had started to reappraise "Forrest Gump" for its treacly tone, its sentimentality, and its unabashed conservative bent. This author was in high school when "Forrest Gump" was released and recalls a teacher sagely pointing out that the title character's "innocence" was only perceived by audiences due to his wealth. Had Forrest's decisions led to financial ruin, his "innocence" would not be positively touted. 

But in 1994, "Forrest Gump" was the bee's knees, representing mainstream Hollywood filmmaking...

In the post-New Hollywood era, there are movie stars and there is Warren Beatty. The sturdily built, 6'2" dreamboat could've been a fine football player, but his movie-mad sister, Shirley MacLaine, got him fired up about acting. Beatty studied under Stella Adler, and arrived fully formed as a matinee idol opposite Natalie Wood in Elia Kazan's 1961 hit, "Splendor in the Grass." Beatty took not just to the craft, but the game. He produced and starred in Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde," which, by dint of his star power, drop-kicked studios into an era of blind risk-taking.

But there was nothing blind about investing in Beatty. "Easy Rider," "Five Easy Pieces," and even "The French Connection" were long shots. Place Beatty at the top of the marquee, and you had an event. The problem for studios was that Beatty had peculiar appetites. Ideally, you'd plug him into "Love Story" or "The Way We Were.

Disney might be an unstoppable media empire today, but back in the 1980s it still wasn't a major Hollywood player. Back then the studio was known primarily for its children's fare. Disney Studios had a well-earned reputation after more than four decades of popular animated movies beginning with 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

Fast-forward to the early 1980s when the film industry was booming thanks to VHS rentals and cable television. Disney Studios wanted in on the action but knew they would have a hard time breaking from the kids-only stigma. Their solution came in the form of Touchstone Films. Utilizing what is known as market segmentation, Disney launched a separate arm of the company, Touchstone Films (later renamed Touchstone Pictures), to produce more mature, live-action content. The first film produced under the Touchstone umbrella was "Splash" in 1984.

Robbie Bachman, the drummer and co-founder of the hit-making 1970s rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive, has died. He was 69.

His death was announced by brother and bandmate, the guitarist and singer Randy Bachman. A cause of death was not immediately available.

“Another sad departure,” Randy Bachman tweeted last night. “The pounding beat behind Bto, my little brother Robbie has joined Mum, Dad & brother Gary on the other side. Maybe Jeff Beck needs a drummer! He was an integral cog in our rock ‘n’ roll machine and we rocked the world together.”

Playing the drums since childhood, Robin Peter Bachman was recruited at age 18 by his big brother Randy, who had already found international success in the band The Guess Who. After Randy left that group in 1970, he formed a short-lived group called Brave Belt, with 18-year-old Robbie on drums.

The Signal Awards, a podcast award from the organizers of the internet-focused Webby Awards, unveiled a wide-ranging group of winners for its inaugural year.

The Signal Awards received nearly 1,700 entries for its dozens of awards, which were divided across four categories: individual episodes, limited series and specials, shows and branded shows and advertising.

The inaugural batch of winners included HBO Max’s Winning Time, Hacks and Insecure companion podcasts; Netflix’s Skip Intro; Pineapple Street Studios’ Back Issue and 70 Over 70; and Pushkin Industries’ Well Read Black Girl.

In the public voting categories, where more than 135,000 fans cast votes for their favorite shows, podcasts like The Bald and the Beautiful with Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova, The Fantasy Footballers, Mother Country Radicals and Stay Tuned With Preet received the most votes, according to the Signal Awards.

Writer, director and producer McG has signed a broadcast direct development deal with Fox Entertainment, the network announced Wednesday during Rob Wade and Michael Thorn’s keynote panel at Content London.

The non-exclusive development deal continues Fox Entertainment’s relationship with McG and his Wonderland Sound & Vision production company as he will continue developing drama series for the network. Previous credits include “Lethal Weapon” and “The O.C.”

The first feature-length film of its kind, the computer animated "Toy Story" helped to break new ground while also delivering a film with a heartwarming story. But as an innovative benchmark in animation, "Toy Story" had plenty of hurdles to overcome. Along with a production process that saw various changes in the story, the film had an almost complete re-write that made key changes to one of the film's primary characters.

Today, Sheriff Woody is known as the charming leader of Andy's toys. Voiced by American treasure Tom Hanks, Woody's character was originally supposed to be much more bitter and controlling in the film's original draft. But that didn't keep Hanks from being interested in the role of Woody. The "Forrest Gump" star was sold on the idea of "Toy Story" simply because of the stunning format of computer animation.

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2022 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 118 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is up by 50 contenders from last year. Since 2017, voters have not had to limit their choices to just 10 shows. The TV academy tells its members to “vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”
