Full Frontal was the third incarnation of long running comedy sketch shows in Australia. Beginning as The DeGeneration (1986) its main players split into The Comedy Company (1988), Fast Foward (1988), and The Late Show (1992). When both series ended they merged into a new show Full Frontal (1993) before moving to a new station later and becoming Totally Full Frontal (1998). A short lived all female cast series called Big Girls Blouse (1994) failed to last after one season. Some cast members such as Mark Mitchell, Kim Gyngel and Eric Bana attempted a solo series based on popular characters, however they where unsuccessful. Shaun Micallef has continued the tradition in many forms over the years in a variety of shows such as The Micallef Program (1998) and Micallef Tonight (2003).
In 2019, cast member Michael Veitch, in an interview, said that given the show's usage of blackface, yellowface, brownface, and gay stereotypes, all of which are considered politically incorrect nowadays, if the show was pitched today it would likely not be made. Also in 2019, fellow cast member Magda Szubanski expressed regret for having appeared in blackface on the show.
