Among those leaving are 24 Hours to Live, Drive Angry, The Devil’s Rejects, Snowpiercer, and USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage. One of the NFL’s biggest names is getting the Netflix sports treatment.

Aaron Rodgers, a four-time league Mvp and quarterback of the New York Jets, will be the subject of a three-hour docuseries on the streamer. Aaron Rodgers: Enigma is set to premiere Dec. 17 — eight days before Netflix takes its biggest leap into live sports with two NFL games on Christmas Day (though neither one involves the Jets).

The Rodgers series is one of several sports projects Netflix announced Monday: It has also picked up a third season of Full Swing, which follows golfers on the PGA Tour, and ordered a new slate of documentaries under the Untold banner. Updated with official details and exec comment. Candle Media, which launched in 2021 with backing from private-equity giant Blackstone, is restructuring its operations in response to broader changes in the streaming sector.

Candle Media, the fledging media company backed by private equity player Blackstone, is undergoing a restructure in order to cut costs.

Founded in 2021 by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, the venture made several splashy acquisitions – including Reese Witherspoon’s production label Hello Sunshine – at the offset. Flash forward three years, and free-spending content buyers have cratered back to earth (along with their individual stock prices).

Variety has confirmed that Mayer and Staggs have moved to consolidate their production businesses into two verticals: live-action production will now fall under Sarah Harden, CEO of Hello Sunshine, who will also retain her title at Witherspoon’s shop; and animation will now exist solely within Candle’s profitable MoonBug, the label behind family juggernaut “CocoMelon,” which airs on Netflix.

Details of cost cuts and potential job losses were not immediately clear. Mayer and Staggs first disclosed the new structure at a Semafor event last week.

The growing pantheon of films and TV series inspired by podcasts continues apace with such noteworthy spinoffs as “Homecoming,” “The Dropout” and “WeCrashed” leading the pack.

It doesn’t seem so common in the Spanish language but Spanish podcast producer TrueStory is hoping to change that. The award-winning three-year-old company, operating from the U.S. and Spain, has inked a pact with Spanish production companies Kowalski Films (box office hit “Ocho Apellidos Vascos”) and Feelgood Media (Icíar’s Bollaín’s “Maixabel”) to co-create a podcast of actual events that can later be adapted into audiovisual formats.

The CW has given a green light to “Crime Nation,” the network’s first true crime series. The 10-episode justice anthology, set to launch in early 2024, delves into real-life mysteries, cold cases and tense investigations.

Each two-hour episode features a ripped-from-the-headlines crime and uncovers new details, complemented by on-camera interviews with the people at the center of the cases. “Crime Nation” is executive produced by head of Candle True Stories and former ABC News president James Goldston.

“As the first true crime series in the history of The CW, ‘Crime Nation’ will provide a fresh new spin on the genre, giving viewers a deeper look into a variety of thrilling and compelling cases,” Heather Olander, The CW’s head of unscripted programming, said in a statement. “The social media conversation around true crime is bigger than ever, and the ‘Crime Nation’ team will explore the relationship between the public narrative...

Running the Monte-Carlo Television Festival since 2012, Laurent Puons has always tried to look ahead. From his embrace of streamers and digital platforms back in 2017 to his growing emphasis on diverse formats, the festival director sees his summer showcase as a bellwether event for the wider television industry – and what the industry could use right now, in Puons’ view, is flexibility.

“There are already so many festivals today dedicated to series,” Puons explains. “But Monte-Carlo follows a wholly different concept. We’re a home for all kinds of content, and one of the only festivals with both fiction and factual competitions. And when you see what’s broadcast on platforms like Netflix and Amazon, [you need to cover that full range.]”

This year’s edition runs June 16 – 20 and is set to welcome 10,000 attendees and host 1,500 interviews, altogether reflecting Monte-Carlo’s wider aim to offer global partners a full service festival stopover.

Ed Pressman was cool. And he had taste. He didn’t care what other people thought of a given project. If he thought it was cool, that was enough. He kept his own counsel; he was quiet. But if he wanted something, he let you know. He was not one to take no for an answer.

This helps to explain how he came to produce some 80 films over the decades. And he had not slowed down in recent years. When Ed and his son Sam came to IndieWire’s Cannes party two years ago, Ed found a quiet corner and worked his phone. Pressman died January 17 of respiratory failure, at age 79.

A hypnotic TV commercial for a local department store beckons — summons, really — shoppers for what amounts to a culturally mandatory annual winter sales event. It’s an ad that’s not unlike the ones for Silver Shamrock in “Halloween III: Season of The Witch,” and in “In Fabric,” it succeeds in the same way, bringing in unhappy bank employee Sheila (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) to look for a first-date dress.

She finds the Ambassadorial Function Dress, color: Artery Red. It’s an alluring garment summed up in the store’s catalog with hyperbolic copy like “body sensual, captivating, candlelight glances, canapé conversations.” Not really Sheila’s size, it somehow fits her perfectly. And though she protests that she normally wouldn’t wear something so bold, the commandingly seductive saleswoman, Miss Luckmoore, doubles down: “Daring eclipses the dark circumference of caution.” There’s really no arguing with that.

Walk into an event at the yearly gathering of cinematographers at Poland’s Camerimage Film Festival and you are likely to find Ed Lachman, the unassuming Dp with his trademark hat, tucked away in a back corner holding court as a collection of his celebrated colleagues hang on his every word. The 27th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival (Sliff) — held Nov. 1-11 — will honor native St. Louisan John Goodman with a Lifetime Achievement Award at a tribute program that will include a clip reel of the actor’s career highlights, a conversation betwen Goodman and John Carney of Ktrs (550 Am), and a screening of “The Big Lebowski” on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. Summer fades into fall, school begins again, and the movie world is buzzing with the Toronto International Film Festival, which we're lucky to host here in Canada. However, even if you can't make it to Tiff, quite a few titles from the festival open in theatres across the country in September, so you can still be a part of the conversation.

Not only that, but there's plenty of highly-anticipated blockbusters opening this month, including the re-make of Stephen King's It, the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service, and another Lego inspired animated adventure.

Panels highlighted opportunities for filmmakers from the region to make TV content.

This year’s CineLink programme at the Sarajevo Film Festival shone the spotlight on TV drama, highlighting opportunities for filmmakers in the region to make small screen content.

“There’s a move towards TV series and there’s a lot of potential for growth there, in this region and the rest of the continent. Festivals will become important for series, we are witnessing this at Sarajevo now and I can only see it growing,” commented the festival’s industry chief Jovan Marjanović to Screen before the festival.

Sessions included a tutorial on how to pitch TV drama projects and an insider’s look into the concept of a writers’ room, both of which you can read below.

Filmmakers and broadcasters were presented with an intriguing selection of topics.

Sarajevo Film Festival’s True Stories Market returned in 2017 to offer filmmakers, producers and broadcasters the opportunity to be introduced to important topics and interesting stories from the region.

At last year’s True Stories Market in Sarajevo, the inaugural edition, Al Jazeera Balkans picked up one of the projects, Restless Dreams, directed by Bosnian filmmaker Muris Beglerović.

The now completed film is screening in Sarajevo this week and will premiere on Al Jazeera English on September 15, followed by a broadcast across all of the network’s channels.

The documentary tells the story of a Bosnian man who spends his days wandering through the woods around Srebrenica in search of human remains. Over the past 22 years, his discoveries have led to the identification of 250 Srebrenica massacre victims.

The past few weeks I’ve been talking a lot about other people’s Kickstarter campaigns. This week, here at ComicMix, I’m here to talk about our Kickstarter campaign that is active right now. That’s right; ComicMix LLC is working on a new project – a major comics collection to benefit Planned Parenthood.

This project has been in the works for nearly two years now. It started back in December of 2015. Fellow ComicMix columnist and my co-editor Molly Jackson and I were at Mia Pizza in Astoria NY. I was a mere two months into my tenure as a columnist here and we were discussing something we could do. We immediately thought of doing a comics anthology. We had a lot of ideas we were throwing around, including a throwback Crime Does Not Pay style anthology.

Chicago – The 16th Tribeca Film Festival wrapped last Sunday (April 30, 2017) and the award-winning films of the festival have been named. Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com was there for the first week of Tribeca and files his personal best of the films he experienced.

This is Patrick switching to first person, and I was able to see 13 media and film works, and took a turn in the “Immersive” or Virtual Reality arcade (there will a separate article on that experience). I sampled TV, short films, documentaries and narrative films, and rank them from first preferred on down, but honestly I didn’t see anything that I didn’t like, which is a testament to the programmers of this iconic film festival.

The late filmmaker Jonathan Demme, who died last night at the age of 73, will always be linked to Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. The two likeminded artists first worked together on the 1984 classic “Stop Making Sense,” a concert documentary that Byrne hired Demme to direct, and that collaboration forever transformed what the world thinks possible of such performance-driven films. More than that, the experience sparked a lifelong friendship, one that extended into several other projects and irrevocably deepened the relationship between music and movies.

This afternoon, Byrne wrote a loving remembrance of Demme on his website. We have reposted the full text of Byrne’s letter below.

David Byrne, who collaborated with director Jonathan Demme multiple times, most notably on the famous Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense, remembered the director on Wednesday with a post on his website. Demme died early this morning at age 73 from esophageal cancer. 

Byrne praised Demme for his "focus on character, his love of ordinary people, [which] made the movies something different and special." Byrne also commended the filmmaker for his musical enthusiasm and ability to "slip a reggae artist's song or a Haitian recording into a narrative film in ways...

While local films were quiet at the box office last year, Aussie TV drama boomed. If catches up with industry leaders to reflect on 2016 and canvass the challenges of the year ahead.

Off the back of a record year in 2015, Aussie films totalled only $24 million (1.9 per cent market share) in 2016 compared to the previous year.s $88 million (7.2 per cent share)..

However, the last couple of months have seen something of a surge. Lion is now the fifth highest grossing Australian film of all time at the local box office, and Australia films earned 13 Oscar nominations across.Hacksaw Ridge, Lion and Tanna.

This year holds further promise with Breath, Dance Academy, Sweet Country, Three Summers, and Hotel Mumbai expected for release..

According to Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason, the industry needs to look at local box office performance over a three year cycle.

It seems that almost every day there is an event covered through that brings back the memories from the Boston Marathon Bombings. When the announcement came that Peter Berg was making a movie about the events on what happened in 2013 some people had reservations because they felt it was too soon for the people that went through the horror. Then Mark Wahlberg came on board and it seemed that if anyone was going to star in a movie about this event it had to be somebody from Boston that understood the complexity of making this movie. It would be the third time Mark Wahlberg would team up with director Peter Berg with the first two movies being Lone Survivor and Deep Water Horizon. This movie would be different though for Mark because this would be about the city he grew up in and the people that adore him.

– The 28th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (Psiff) has announced that the festival’s opening night will be the World Premiere screening of “The Sense of an Ending,” directed by Ritesh Batra on Thursday, January 5. The festival will close with “The Comedian,” directed by Taylor Hackford on Sunday, January 15. The Festival will screen 190 films from 72 countries, including 58 premieres (9 World, 5 International, 20 North American and 24 U.S.) from January 2 – 16, 2017.

The complete line-up including a focus on cinema from Poland, Premieres, New Voices/New Visions competition, Modern Masters, True Stories, After Dark and more were also announced, in addition to the Awards Buzz program released last week.
