The story of one young man, Cru Jones, who has the intensity and desire to win a BMX race called Helltrack. It's going to take a lot more than skill for Cru Jones to conquer the toughest BMX challenge in the world. It's going to take a miracle. The shot in Canada film Rad is enoying an anniversary revival at the moment and up here in Canada there was a one-night screening scheduled through...

“Cult classic” is a term that gets thrown around quite a bit nowadays. There are even films that purposefully hope to earn that title as if there’s some formula to attain the status. But true cult classic films are created with the best intentions and through the sheer will of the fans, they become something greater than anyone could ever imagine. The 1986 BMX film, “Rad,” is one of those films.

Utopia, the fledgling sales and distribution company co-founded by filmmaker Robert Schwartzman, has picked up North American rights to artist Amalia Ulman’s debut feature ‘El Planeta.’ The dark comedy was one of the buzz titles at Sundance’s World Dramatic competition.
Danielle Digiacomo, Utopia’s Head of Content commented: “Amalia Ulman’s “El Planeta” is a pure, transportive cinematic experience that is deceptively simple in its construction, yet so layered with wit, heart, and humanity that it leaves a profound impression akin to the work of many great auteurs.”
“It is a true gem of a film; Utopia couldn’t be more enamored of Amalia, her vision, and overjoyed about the ability to partner with her on its distribution,” added Digiacomo who joined Utopia early last year.

The new distribution platform Altavod is about to give filmmakers — especially independent filmmakers — more control of their work.
With Utopia founder and filmmaker Robert Schwartzman and Cole Harper founded the new platform launches which launches today. Altavod provides distributors and independent filmmakers with full control to upload, manage and distribute their movies directly to consumers.
In addition, the platform provides transparent back-end data and analytics around consumer engagement to allow filmmakers to have real-time access to page impressions, sales and conversions related to their campaign — which is a first for a platform of its kind.
“Altavod was created to give filmmakers better opportunities for self-distribution,” said Schwartzman. “With Altavod, filmmakers have full control over rental and purchase pricing, release dates, location availability and creative marketing aspects. We are excited to introduce this service to the filmmaking community, especially during a time when digital consumer engagement is at an all-time high.

For only the second time in the five months of parallel theatrical/Video on Demand releases, one film led grosses both in available theaters and on at least one home viewing chart. Dave Franco’s “The Rental” (IFC) grossed $404,000 in 250 theaters, two thirds of them drive-ins, to easily best several library titles made available this week. “The Karate Kid” (1984) was #2 with about half that gross from a larger number of theaters.
The horror thriller, starring Dan Stevens and Alison Brie, about two couples at a vacation rental facing unexpected terror, also placed #1 on Apple TV’s list of most viewed titles. With the film only released on Friday (too late for inclusion on other current charts), this is likely only a harbinger of more success as other lists are updated.
Unlike “Trolls World Tour” (Universal), the previous dual top placer, this is a standard price rental ($5.99-$6.99 depending on venue...

Don't worry, dude! If you missed seeing Hal Needham's Rad when it was released in theaters in 1986 -- that's me -- and then missed seeing a restored version during the SXSW film festival in March -- because the festival was cancelled -- and then missed out on ordering a limited-edition Blu-ray copy from the good folks at Vinegar Syndrome when it was recently released and then promptly sold out -- that's me, too! -- then there is no need to worry! What, me worry? Originally produced by the late Jack Schwartzman, the film has been restored by his wife and son - actress Talia Shire and filmmaker Robert Coppola Schwartzman. "Okay, dudes, let's walk this sucker!" Utopia & Altavod have released a new trailer for the 4K restoration of 80s cult classic Rad. This was originally released in March of 1986 during the BMX bike craze, and it's one of those cheesy-but-awesome 80s sports movies for-teens about an outcast who tries to beat everyone else in the big competition. Rad has since gone on to become a beloved cult classic, not only because it has a killer soundtrack and impressive stunts, but because it so perfectly captures the vibe of the 80s. And it's one of the only BMX movies ever made that treats the sport with respect. Starring Bill Allen, Talia Shire, and Bart Conner. The movie even has an Instagram and Facebook for those who are just catching up with it now 34 years later. If you've heard plenty about this, but never seen it yet, now is the perfect time to ride with Rad.

A sleeper hit upon its initial release, Rad has become one of the iconic cult films of the 1980s and amongst BMX professionals, spawning fan clubs and repertory film screenings for decades.

Busiest man in Hollywood right now? Daniel Radcliffe must be up there.
No sooner had we finished digesting the trailer for his upcoming action comedy Guns Akimbo, we get another slice of Rad from something else. The slice in question is a new preview for his prison break film Escape from Pretoria, a based-on-real-life thriller regarding the escape of three political prisoners in Apartheid-era South Africa.
As always, you can check out the trailer in the box above. Or, carry on reading this magnificent prose. I’m content with either. Both work, too.
Curiously, Guns Akimbo and Escape from Pretoria each release within a day of each other (according to Wikipedia), Akimbo on March 5th and Pretoria on March 6th. That means there’ll be two Daniel Radcliffe-fronted features for you to choose from that weekend, a boon for Radheads (is that the term?). The films would appear to be low budget affairs,...

On a Sunday morning in November 2017, Oscar-nominated costume designer and stylist Arianne Phillips pulled up to CAA for a meeting to which she’d been invited without receiving any other information.
“Reese Witherspoon was there at that meeting, and I know her because we worked together on ‘Walk the Line,’” says Phillips, who’s also worked on “Nocturnal Animals,” “W.E.” and “A Single Man,” as well as with Madonna for more than 20 years. “She told me at that time, it hadn’t been announced, that the actresses were going to wear black in solidarity [to the 2018 Globes], and would I create a pin or something for the men who’d be supporting to wear?”
The black and white Time’s Up pin that Phillips designed became a pervasive red-carpet statement for both men and women, at the Globes and other awards shows throughout the year.

If he can jump fifteen buses on his motorbike – that’s one more than Evel Knievel; you can check, online – and raise the $50,000 required for his stepdad Frank’s life-saving surgery, he’ll be acclaimed as a hero. Far more importantly, he’ll also be able to kick Frank’s ass. Rod’s been mocked and bullied by his stepdad for a long time. This is his chance to prove himself as a man, gain Frank’s respect, and win the heart of his next-door neighbour, Denise. There’s only one problem: Rod’s never actually managed to perform a stunt successfully. Ancestors, protect him…

Stars: Raleigh Holmes, Lori Laughlin, Jonathan Silverman, Sterling Beaumon, Steven Weber, Paul James | Written by Josh Stolberg, Nick Taravella | Directed by Josh Stolberg
Writer Josh Stolberg, who penned Alexander Aja’s Piranha 3D and the Dane Cook vehicle Good Luck Chuck, turns his hand to both writing and directing with his take of the formulaic “hider in the house” story, entitled The Attic (aka Crawlspace).
In a charming and quiet suburban town, Tim (Jonathan Silverman) and Susan Gates (Lori Loughlin) have found their perfect new house, and their lively daughter Kayla has just returned home from college to help with the big move alongside her brothers, Shane and Taylor. But behind the picture of suburban bliss is an altogether more sinister story. During the move, Tim reluctantly reveals his knowledge of the house’s dark past – the story of two small children who drowned in the pool and the parents...

Hollywood stuntman and film director who scored huge successes with Smokey and the Bandit and The Cannonball Run
Upset by the critical response to his work, the stuntman turned film director Hal Needham, who has died aged 82, took out advertisements in Variety and other trade papers. They featured quotes from negative reviews for his movies including Smokey and the Bandit (1977) and The Cannonball Run (1981), alongside a wheelbarrow overflowing with dollar bills.
Needham made a point. His rumbustious 1977 directorial debut had grossed over $100m – an enormous return on its modest budget. He was still milking that particular creation some 20 years later, producing and directing a series of television movies, including Bandit Goes Country and Beauty and the Bandit.
These and other films, many of which starred Burt Reynolds, were seen by an audience of hundreds of millions worldwide, yet few reference books acknowledged his 45-year-long career — an unjustified omission, if only...

One thing that marked the movies of the 1980′s more than anything else was the amazing soundtracks. The 80′s saw an explosion in licensed music in movies, and led to many bands finding success in the Us, where previously they’d been struggling. In honour of the great movie soundtracks of the decade, here’s my rundown of the ten best Under Rated Movie Songs of the 80′s:
10. Joe Esposito – You’re the Best Around from The Karate Kid:
9. Kenny Loggins – I’m Free (Heaven Helps The Man) from Footloose:
8. Tim Feehan – Where’s the Fire from The Wraith:
7. Stephanie Mills – Bit by Bit from Fletch:
6. Alisha – Do You Dream About Me from Mannequin:
5. John Farnham – Break the Ice from Rad:
4. Chas Jankel – Number One from Real Genius:
3. Max Carl – The Circle from Weird Science:
2. Amy McDonald – Shooting For the Moon from Teen...

Rad
Directed by Hal Needham
Written by Sam Bernard and Geoffrey Edwards
1986, USA
It’s going to take a lot more than skill for Cru Jones to conquer the toughest BMX challenge in the world. It’s going to take a miracle.
Rad, made three years after Nicole Kidman’s BMX Bandits, remains the most popular BMX film to date; which isn’t saying much since there have only been a handful of BMX films ever made. A product of the 80′s, Rad seems more interested in ramping up as much product placement as it could squeeze in, than in character development or plot – but longtime Stuntman-turned-director Hal Needham (Smokey and the Bandit, Cannonball Run) does the best he can with the script given to him. In fact, Rad fits so well into Needham’s oeuvre that it’s no wonder he offers a stunning opening 8 minute BMX montage and...

Stuntman Hal Needham boasts in his autobiography that he “broke 56 bones, my back twice, punctured a lung and knocked out a few teeth.”
Those are the trophies from a life spent falling off horses, crashing cars, and plummeting from buildings for the sake of the movies. Now he can add a less painful one to the list — an honorary Academy Award.
Needham, 81, is one of four Hollywood figures selected late Wednesday to receive an honorary Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the upcoming Governors Awards, joining documentarian D.A. Pennebaker, American Film Institute founder George Stevens,...

This weekend’s B-Sides song makes me feel like I can accomplish something. What exactly, I’m not sure. But damnit, listening to “Break the Ice” from the motion picture Rad makes me want to do something, anything, and the power of John Farham’s stirring vocals makes me believe I can do it – whatever “it” is.
Rad was Hal Needham’s 1986 Karate Kid on BMX bikes. You know how you see a movie as a kid and grow up thinking it’s the greatest thing ever but others keep telling you it's just childhood nostalgia clouding your judgment? That’s not the case here. Rad truly is one of the greatest movies ever made, and I will punch any man or woman that dares to disagree. Okay, physical violence might be going too far, but if you've got a problem with Rad, then go get your BMX and meet...

Concord, Nh - The Rad Girls prove that women can be out of control without beating each other senseless. The trio of Ramona Ca$h, Munchie and Darling Clementine are in the midst of their third season of mayhem on MavTV. How could I refuse a chance to talk women who figured out how to give themselves bikini waxes using a car bumper?
Ouch. The trio called the Party Favors hotline from various parts of the Southwest including the lonely highway from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Munchie swore they were just in a convenience store that seemed a location from The House of a 1,000 Corpses. Please excuse me if I attribute a quote to the wrong member since the conversation moved fast and furious.
The outrageous series wasn’t always on MavTV. Clementine explained, “We had a really fun run on Fuse. We got a lot of fans. They were like,...
