Harrison Ford is no stranger to blockbuster Hollywood franchises, having played Han Solo and Indiana Jones across decades. And now, the 82-year-old actor is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross / Red Hulk in next year’s “Captain America: Brave New World.” Speaking to GQ magazine, Ford said it would be “silly” to avoid Marvel when it’s something moviegoers have clearly responded to for years now.
“I mean, this is the Marvel universe and I’m just there on a weekend pass. I’m a sailor new to this town,” Ford said about his MCU debut. “I understand the appeal of other kinds of films besides the kind we made in the ’80s and ’90s. I don’t have anything general to say about it. It’s the condition our condition is in, and things change and morph and go on. We’re silly if we sit...

Exclusive: Out at the Cannes market, LA-based production company Convergence Entertainment Group is launching There There, which is being written and directed by the Polish brothers in their first collaboration in more than a decade.
The film has begun principal photography and the duo are hopeful it will premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. This would be the sixth Polish Brothers film to premiere at the festival.
On There There, each of the twin brothers will write and direct one half of the movie without the other knowing anything about the other, resulting in two separate storylines that will be interwoven into a single feature-length film. This approach will enable each brother to explore the nature of the twin relationship from their own unique perspective without being influenced or constrained by the other’s vision.

No news is good news... until it's bad news.
Apple TV+ has canceled its Uma Thurman drama series Suspicion after a single season.
Deadline first reported the news a year and a half after its freshman finale.
"When the son of a prominent American businesswoman (Thurman) is kidnapped from a New York hotel, the eye of suspicion quickly falls on four seemingly ordinary British citizens who were at the hotel on the night in question," the logline teased.
"As they find themselves in a trans-Atlantic cat and mouse race to evade the combined forces of the National Crime Agency and the F.B.I. to prove their innocence, it becomes apparent that not everyone can be trusted."
"Who is really behind the mysterious abduction, and who is only guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time?"

Well, this is sad TV news on this fine holiday weekend.
Apple TV+ has canceled High Desert following the conclusion of its freshman season, according to Patrica Arquette.
"A lot of you have asked about High Desert and if there was going to be a second season," the actress said in an Instagram video on Saturday.
"So I just wanted to let you know, we just found out that it won't be coming back," she added.
"So that's a sad bummer for all of us."
She thanked the crew, writers, actors and fans. "You can't win 'em all," she added.
Ben Stiller, who served as an executive producer on the series, also addressed the cancellation.
"We are all disappointed," he wrote.
"Our entire #HighDesert cast was amazing and to all our fans, thank you for embracing this show."
"I Love Patricia Arquette, who gave an awards worthy performance," he continued.

With “Master Gardner,” writer-director Paul Schrader completes what has been dubbed his “Lonely Man” trilogy — but the man behind “American Gigolo” and “The Mosquito Coast” has returned to the same preoccupations and themes over his long career. The only thing that’s really changed is his approach to filmmaking.
“The last three films I’ve made in about 20 days each,” Schrader told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “I’m shooting more quote-unquote film — even though we don’t shoot film — I’m shooting more images and getting more images in the chip to, like we say, in the 20 days than I did in 40.”
Part of that leanness is attributed to Schrader’s understanding of what is and isn’t needed, even before arriving on set. His scripts are now a tight 70-80 pages, while in the early ’80s they tended to hover around 115. “When you’re working on a tight budget,...

The HBO drama “The Leftovers” (2014 – 2017) created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta remains arguably one of the most Emmys-overlooked shows of all time. The series received only one Emmy nomination during its three-season run, and not even for the universally acclaimed lead performances by actors Justin Theroux or Carrie Coon. The duo might have had bad luck back then, but they’re both returning to overtake the Emmys this year in the Movie/Limited Series acting categories.
The acting was undoubtedly one of the strongest and most compelling assets of “The Leftovers.” The chief of police, Kevin Garvey, who goes on different levels of mental exploration, was Theroux’s first main TV protagonist role. Coon started off the series as a supporting character — grieving mother and wife Nora Durst — in season 1. She continued as the co-lead opposite Theroux until the end of the series. Despite their powerful presence on screen,...

Much has been written about how the Prestige TV era often discards the episodic format of old to present seasons that play more like long movies with credit breaks every hour or so. Creator Neil Cross (“Luther”) clearly had this in mind while conceiving his take on “The Mosquito Coast.” Unfolding more like a 7-hour movie than a traditional season of television, this riff on the Paul Theroux novel, memorably adapted once in 1986 by Peter Weir, is a taut, gripping story of a family on the run that owes more to modern dramas like “Breaking Bad” and particularly “Ozark” than it does to its origins.

A review of Peter Weir‘s classic 1980s drama, “The Mosquito Coast” starring Harrison Ford—about an American inventor exhausted by the perceived danger and degradation of modern society, who decides to escape with his wife and children to the jungles of South America to start over— on Letterboxed humorously describes the film as, about “a fine-ass Libertarian mad scientist who brings ice to Belize.” That’s a little reductive but does speak to the nature of how relevant “The Mosquito Coast” is today.

Watching the 2021 Producers Guild Awards ceremony on Wednesday night felt a lot like cultural deja vu. When you used to stumble downstairs in the middle of the night, unable to sleep, and settle on watching a movie on cable that you think you’ve seen before, but you can’t be certain. The plot points seem familiar and you can basically predict what’s going to happen from scene to scene, but you’re not sure if that’s because you’re remembering it or because whatever you’re watching reminds you of a dozen other movies you’ve seen like it. Regardless, you watch it through to the end, finally feel ready to get some sleep and by morning, you’ve largely forgotten about it.
Anyway, the big TV winners at the PGA awards included Netflix darlings “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit” and if that is wholly unsurprising...

The Gold Derby predictions center is now open to nomination predictions for the 2021 Emmy Awards. Fresh off its sweep at the Golden Globes, “The Crown” is the early frontrunner to win Best Drama Series for its fourth season, having been nominated its previous three. “Succession” beat it last year, but is currently taking an extended hiatus from the airwaves. “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Elisabeth Moss) is the only past Best Drama Series winner in contention, with its fourth season set to premiere April 28. The Emmys’ eligibility cycle spans roughly from June 2020 to June 2021.
“The Mandalorian” (Pedro Pascal) is the only other drama eligible to hold onto its nomination from last year, so there are five open slots, which was actually the case two years ago as well. Gone from this cycle are “Better Call Saul,” “Killing Eve,” “Ozark” and “Stranger Things.” As cable and streaming shows have sat out certain years during extended hiatuses,...

Yesterday, at the Television Critics Association Winter 2021 Press Tour, Apple TV+ revealed first looks for a number of their original new series to hit the streaming service this year.
Physical
A new dramedy starring Emmy and Golden Globe-nominee Rose Byrne and created by Annie Weisman, the Apple TV Original series will premiere in summer 2021.
Set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of sunny 1980s San Diego, “Physical” is a half-hour dark comedy following Sheila Rubin (played by Byrne), a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her smart but controversial husband’s bid for state assembly. But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly funny take on the life she rarely lets the world see. She’s also battling a complex set of personal demons relating to her self-image…. that is until she finds release through the unlikeliest source: the world of aerobics.

Justin Theroux’s return to television is nothing short of a family affair.
The actor, who last led HBO’s critically acclaimed drama “The Leftovers” and co-starred in the Netflix limited series “Maniac,” will soon be seen in “The Mosquito Coast,” a new series from Apple TV+ about a family who flees to Mexico when the U.S. government comes a’ callin’. Theroux plays the patriarch, eccentric inventor, and idealist Allie Fox, who film fans may associate with Harrison Ford — in the 1986 movie of the same name — but the story originated in 1981 as a novel by Paul Theroux, who just so happens to be Justin’s uncle.
Now, 40 years after its release, the book has been adapted into a seven-episode first season by series creator Neil Cross (“Luther”) and is set to make an awards run this spring. Early Friday, Apple TV+ released the debut trailer, first-look photos, and set...

“Set in the early 1960s, ‘Lessons in Chemistry’ follows Elizabeth Zott (Larson), whose dream of being a scientist is put on hold in a society deeming that women belong in the domestic sphere, not the professional one," reads the network's description of the project.
"When Elizabeth finds herself pregnant, alone and fired from her lab, she musters the ingenuity only a single mother has."
"She accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show, and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives — and the men who are suddenly listening — a lot more than recipes… all the while craving a return to her true love: science.”

An ambitious scheme to make the Mexican region of Jalisco the production capital of Latin America, a Jallywood so to speak, has launched with the introduction of a new state film law.
“We want to send a clear message that with or without federal help or despite the federal government, we pledge to direct more resources towards the state’s audiovisual industry,” declared Jalisco governor Ernesto Alfaro at a press conference in late October. Alfaro lamented the government’s severe cuts to federal funds supporting a range of industries, including Mexico’s audiovisual sector. “If there was corruption, then clean it up, penalize, but don’t sweep it all away,” he asserted.
Among the law’s myriad objectives is the introduction of financial and fiscal incentives to foster investment in audiovisual projects in Jalisco.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today we discuss the greatest movie star of them all: Mr. Harrison Ford! With his new film The Call of the Wild now in theaters, myself and Conor O’Donnell talk about a handful of B-Sides from the legend’s long career. After being a contract player in the late ‘60s, Ford began popping up in stuff like Getting Straight and American Graffiti in the early ‘70s ahead of his breakout turn as Han Solo in 1977’s Star Wars.
Following his first (and only) Oscar nomination for Witness, Ford re-teamed with director Peter Weir for our first B-Side, The Mosquito Coast. Two years later, he worked with Roman Polanski on the Hitchcockian thriller Frantic. After an incredible box...

Harrison Ford could soon be taking on the first regular television role of his career.
Variety has learned exclusively from sources that the iconic movie star is attached to star in a series adaptation of “The Staircase,” the docuseries that detailed the trial of American novelist Michael Peterson, who was accused of murdering his wife in 2001. The project is currently being shopped to networks and streaming services. Ford is attached to executive produce the series in addition to starring. Antonio Campos will write and executive produce, with Annapurna Television producing. The docuseries was originally released in 2004, with creator Jean-Xavier de Lestrade updating with new information years later. Netflix released it as a 13-episode series in 2018.
