As this long-forgotten TV movie opens in New York City, Joel Higgins ("Silver Spoons" father) is meeting Stephen Collins at an appointed time and place, and we quickly get the point this is not on friendly terms. They proceed to get into a fist fight, leading up to Joel chasing Stephen through New York. Then, as the chase progresses throughout the film, we are shown by flashback what caused this rift. In the beginning of all this, we see Joel leaving his wife, Dana Delany, after an estrangement to live in New York City. In New York, Stephen and Deborah Raffin are breaking up, as she learns he has not invested as much in this relationship as she has. She's just another lover in a long line to him. Joel and Stephen meet and reminisce and when Stephen shows Deborah to Joel, Joel becomes attracted to her. Stephen explains to Joel, when asked how he let her get away, that he doesn't let them get away, he just discards them. Nice guy! Ultimately, Joel and Deborah do form an affinity for each other, thus making the "Threesome" relevant, making these friendships and relationships that are blending together very intimate. Similar to other films of its kind, about a small circle of friends/lovers, (such as the miniseries "The Last Convertible,") this film is very personal and deeply felt, as they confide their feelings to each other and the guys have their own buddy relationship. That is, until the climax that brings this to a boil. This is very respectful of its characters and we see them all as imperfect people who need love, while at the same time, some can't give love back. "Threesome" is a TV movie that probably will never be seen again on television and that's a shame, because it shows Deborah Raffin, Stephen Collins and Joel Higgins at their best in adult, intelligent material.
