Updated with more details: A magnitude 4.7 earthquake hit Malibu and nearby communities at 7:28 a.m. today, the U.S. Geological Survey said. A 2.8 aftershock arrived just minutes later, followed by four more ranging from 2.7-3.5 in the next hour-plus.
The first quake, originally reported as a 5.1 but later downgraded, was centered five miles north of Malibu and seven miles deep, Usgs said. There have been no reports of injuries or significant damage yet.
In a televised Q&a just after the temblor, Usgs seismologist Lucy Jones said: “We have had more than the average [number of] magnitude-4 quakes in Southern California this year — the average being about eight magnitude-4 sequences, that being sequences of at least one magniture-4 … So far we’ve had 14 in Southern California; the largest previous year was 13.
“Notice these numbers are small, however,” she added. “It’s not yet statistically significant.”

She’s got the best of both worlds: Miley Cyrus became a first-time Grammy winner this year, and now she’s been named a Disney Legend.
Lainey Wilson took the stage to introduce Cyrus, performing her own lively rendition of the “Hannah Montana” classic “The Best of Both Worlds.” After the song, she told the singer, “Miley, I want to thank you for never being afraid to step outside the box, always staying true to yourself, and most importantly, always kicking butt.”
“I’m gonna let everybody get on a little Disney Legend secret. I’m the one that tells you what you’re not supposed to know. And what I want to say, is that legends get scared, too. I’m scared right now, but the difference is we do it anyway, and all of you can do that every single day. It’s legendary to be afraid and do it anyway.

Alex Cox on Why He’s Directing a ‘Repo Man’ Sequel: ‘Everything Has Changed and Nothing Has Changed’
Alex Cox’s 1984 “Repo Man” was a Reagan-era satire about consumerism and the Atomic Age. Its punk rock soundtrack transformed it into a cult hit, but its funny and strange combination of sci-fi, workplace comedy, and the fear of nuclear annihilation made it an enduring classic.
Forty years later, Cox will revisit the repo man and the world of bland, generic grocery store clerks stocking and selling “Food” and “Beer” day in and day out. He has written and will direct a sequel, “Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer,” and he told IndieWire why this film will embody “the repo world of 2024.”
Cox said “The Wages of Beer” will take place in a world of self-driving cars and an even more pressing threat of global destruction. “The advent of incredible technology means, for the repo man, that everything has changed — and nothing has changed,” he said via email.

Margo Price has readied a follow-up to her January album Strays, naturally dubbed Strays II. She’ll roll out the sequel project in three acts culminating in a double album due out October 13th, and also embark on a tour of the UK and US this fall. What’s more, the three songs comprising Act I: Topanga Canyon are out now.
Strays had a pretty mystical origin story involving a psychedelic trip to the South Carolina countryside, and Price wrote some of the music that would become Strays II during the same excursion. Before combining the two projects into a double LP, the nine songs on the second record will initially be shared as three acts known as Topanga Canyon, Mind Travel, and Burn Whatever’s Left.
Out today is Strays II’s Act I: Topanga Canyon, featuring the tracks “Strays,” “Closer I Get (ft. Ny Oh),” and “Malibu (ft.

Dolly Parton is Miley Cyrus’ godmother, and she once explained why people want to “punish” the Hannah Montana star. Here’s what Parton said about Cyrus and why she compared her goddaughter to Shirley Temple.
Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton | NBC/NBCUniversal Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus have a special bond
Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton have been close ever since the former Disney star was born, thanks to the country music star’s friendship with Cyrus’ father, Billy Ray.
“I’m her honorary godmother. I’ve known her since she was a baby,” Parton told ABC in 2009. “Her father is a friend of mine. And when she was born, he said, ‘You just have to be her godmother,’ and I said, ‘I accept.’ We never did do a big ceremony, but I’m so proud of her, love her, and she’s just like one of my own.”

Liam Hemsworth spent a decade of his life romancing Miley Cyrus. The two fell in love while working together on their 2010 film, "The Last Song," and by December 2018, after some highly-publicized ups and downs, they were married. Unfortunately, however, their marital bliss didn't last: they broke up eight months later, finalizing the divorce in January 2020.
Throughout their tumultuous relationship, the most insight fans got into Hemsworth and Cyrus's romance was via the singer's discography. Her 2013 album, "Bangerz," which came out shortly after the pair called off their first engagement, was packed with breakup anthems like "Wrecking Ball." Meanwhile, Cyrus's 2017 album, "Younger Now," was full of love songs like "Malibu" following their 2016 reconcilliation. It's safe to say her 2023 album, "Endless Summer Vacation," is inspired, at least in part, but their 2020 divorce (those "Flowers" lyrics are brutal).

Miley Cyrus isn't having any of it. In her new song "Muddy Feet," off her "Endless Summer Vacation" album, the singer seems to address a cheating partner, telling them to "get the f*ck out of my house with that sh*t" in the emotional pop ballad. Following speculation that her hit single "Flowers" was directed at her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth, some fans are assuming these lyrics could be directed at him as well, although Cyrus never explicitly mentions anyone by name.
A few lines in particular are generating attention. "And you smell like perfume that I didn't purchase / Now I know why you've been closing the curtains," Cyrus sings in the pre-chorus, alluding to infidelity. "You've watered the weeds and you killed all the roses," she continues in a subtle nod to her "Flowers" lyrics. "Worthy arrives when the other door closes."

Authenticity, fearlessness, and unapologetic attitudes—if these are the themes for the season, then these breakout artists are setting the tone. Pretenses and pleasantries fall away in favor of living out truth in lyrics of every language. While UK’s Cat Burns and Egypt’s Ali Loka go daringly direct, Korean pop group Nmixx and Italy’s Rhove draw out your confidence to keep it real.

A heroic police officer risked his life to save a woman from a burning car on Friday in Spokane, Washington.
Spokane Police Officer Tim Schwering was the first to arrive at the alarming scene and immediately tried to break the woman’s car window with a baton to get her out, the department told People.
“He was able to break through the drivers seat window and pulled her out,” says Michelle Anderson, the police departments public safety communications manager. “The entire car was filled with smoke.”
The woman, Kim Novak, was miraculously left unharmed, while Schwering was treated for smoke inhalation.

A few years ago the editors of Shadowlocked asked me to compile a list of what was initially to be, the ten greatest movie matte paintings of all time. A mere ten selections was too slim by a long shot, so my list stretched considerably to twenty, then thirty and finally a nice round fifty entries. Even with that number I found it wasn’t easy to narrow down a suitably wide ranging showcase of motion picture matte art that best represented the artform. So with that in mind, and due to the surprising popularity of that 2012 Shadowlocked list (which is well worth a visit, here Ed), I’ve assembled a further fifty wonderful examples of this vast, vital and more extensively utilised than you’d imagine – though now sadly ‘dead and buried’ – movie magic.
It would of course be so easy to simply concentrate on the well known, iconic,...

They may not be General Zod or Darth Vader, but these characters are the kind of mundane villains you might encounter in everyday life...
The most memorable movie villains are often also the most outlandish. If you were to stop most strangers on the street and ask them to name screen villain, they’d probably either tell you to leave them alone and stop making them nervous, or they’d instead name one of cinema’s big hitters: heavy-breathing cloak-wearer Darth Vader, or flesh-eating aesthete Hannibal Lecter.
In reality, villains are more mundane. They seldom wear outlandish costumes, and they don’t necessarily even kill or injure people. Real-world villains can range from bullying and self-important bosses to aggressively opinionated news anchors, and from sadistic physical education teachers to heartless politicians.
So here are 10 or so screen antagonists who've stuck in the memory without wearing hockey masks,...

Mel Gibson, whom I interviewed for Venice Magazine in late 2000, was my first real childhood hero I sat down with. If you were a Gen-x male, Mel Gibson was the closest thing we had to Paul Newman, Steve McQueen and Sean Connery: a guy's guy whom guys wanted to emulate and women wanted to copulate. If you were a guy who liked girls, the math in the previous equation was pretty simple: be like Mel. Sadly, Gibson's life has taken a very public turn for the worse in the last decade, since his personal legal and troubles stemming from a 2006 DUI arrest in Malibu were made public, one from which his image has yet to fully recover. It was an unfortunate fall from grace for a guy who literally had Hollywood, and the world, in the palm of his hand after sweeping the 1995 Oscars with his box office smash "Braveheart.

Back to the Sixties! continues at Trailers from Hell, with screenwriter Sam Hamm introducing 1960's "Strangers When He Meet"; he describes it as "the best story of adultery ever filmed by Hollywood."This ironic, Douglas Sirkian romantic time capsule about an extra marital affair was originally offered to Glenn Ford, who refused to work with star Kim Novak. Coproducer Kirk Douglas took the role only to turn on her when she gave him acting lessons in front of the crew. Nevertheless, the critical and boxoffice flop has aged quite well, especially if you live in Bel Air, Beverly Hills or Malibu. A fascinating rumination on this film by Peter Avellino can be found here.

All those who complain about the liberal domination of Hollywood have never come across John Milius. A film school pal of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, Milius had tried to join the Marine Corp, but was turned away due to his asthma. Instead, he channeled his frustrations into both a life-long obsession with firearms (he was paid for "Jeremiah Johnson" in antique weaponry, and has served on the NRA Board of Directors) and making some of the most masculine, testosterone-filled movies of all time, both as an acclaimed writer and as a director. The basis for both Paul Le Mat's character in "American Graffiti" and Walter in "The Big Lebowski" -- the Coens are friends of Milius, and offered him the part of Jack Lipnick in "Barton Fink" -- he's one of film history's most singular, colorful characters.

The 'Beverly Hills, 90210' actress wed her fiance in a black-tie celebration at a private estate in Malibu, California, on Saturday (15.10.11), and the nuptials will be aired on the season finale of her series 'Shannen Says' on the WEtv network in January.
Around 170 guests attended the event after receiving specially crafted invites featuring a photograph of the happy couple.
It is the third time 40-year-old Shannen has tied the knot. She was previously wed to Ashley Hamilton, son of George Hamilton, for six months until April 1994, and her seven-month marriage to Rick Salomon, best known for appearing in a sex tape with Paris Hilton, was annulled in 2003.
Shannen has previously said she would not enter into a marriage lightly following on from her past relationship troubles.
She said: "I would consider getting married again because I want kids. That's why I would do it.
"You have to be 100 per cent sure.

New York — President John F. Kennedy had just one critique when he saw photos of the actor set to play him in a World War II drama.
The year was 1963 and actor Cliff Robertson looked convincing in his costume for "Pt-109," the first film to portray a sitting president. Kennedy had favored Robertson for the role, but one detail was off.
Robertson's hair was parted on the wrong side.
The actor dutifully trained his locks to part on the left and won praise for a role he'd remain proud of throughout his life.
Robertson, who went on to win an Oscar for his portrayal of a mentally disabled man in "Charly", died of natural causes Saturday afternoon in Stony Brook, a day after his 88th birthday, according to Evelyn Christel, his secretary of 53 years.
Robertson never elevated into the top ranks of leading men, but he remained a popular actor...

Canadian actor who had a decade of Hollywood success playing anti-heroes
The Canadian-born actor Michael Sarrazin, who has died of cancer aged 70, was so visible in Hollywood movies from 1967 to 1977 that one may wonder what happened to his subsequent career. A facetious answer might be that he moved back to Canada and made Canadian movies. Another answer might be that his sensitive, gently rebellious, flower-child persona and his lanky, boyish looks, with his long hair and soulful eyes, were no longer appropriate to the roles he took as he got older.
However, during the decade of his stardom, Sarrazin seemed to fit the anti-hero ethos of the era, often playing rootless characters, typically in his most celebrated role as the ex-farmboy drifter in Sydney Pollack's They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969). Sarrazin, idealistically willing to let fate take a hand, is paired with an embittered Jane Fonda in a dance...

Film director best known for the Pink Panther, Breakfast at Tiffany's and 10
The film-maker Blake Edwards, who has died aged 88, will be best remembered as the creator of the Pink Panther films, and as the husband of the entertainer Julie Andrews. But Edwards was a third-generation show-business figure whose complex and controversial career spanned more than 50 years, initially as an actor and writer and subsequently as one of America's most prolific producer-directors, primarily concerned with the popular genres of comedy and musicals and with creating television series.
Despite working in mainstream cinema, his maverick spirit and ego made him an uneasy partner with Hollywood studios. He famously savaged the hand that had fed him so well with S.O.B. (1981), a raucous, vitriolic attack on Tinseltown. His sophisticated work drew strongly on his love of early cinema (his stepgrandfather had directed silent films), and on his own life and psychological problems (he...
