Dirk Benedict was not the original actor selected to play Templeton Peck in the pilot. The part was played by Tim Dunigan. He was later replaced by Benedict because the producers felt Dunigan looked too young to be a Vietnam veteran. It was also alleged the fact he was significantly taller than his co-stars also led to the part being recast.

He would later organise his own private rescue attempt for American soldiers supposedly held captive after the end of the Vietnam War providing the basis for Gene Hackman's character in the film 'Uncommon Valour'. Face was based on James Garner's character Hendley 'The Scrounger' in The Great Escape, based on Garner's real life role in his army unit during the Korean War.
