Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.
Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Severin Summer Sale…
Opera
In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.
Co-written by Argento and frequent collaborator Franco Ferrini, the giallo stars Cristina Marsillach as Betty, a young opera singer whose big break...

Ti West’s “MaXXXine” has slashed its way into theaters. And the third film in the trilogy that began with 2022’s “X” and continued with the prequel “Pearl,” is perhaps the installment most steeped in other movies. This is a movie where, when a character is threatening Maxine (Mia Goth), the porn star that survived the events of “X” and now, circa “MaXXXine” is struggling to make it in mainstream Hollywood in 1985, they send her a newspaper clipping with the headline: “The Texas Porn Star Massacre,” a direct reference to Tobe Hooper’s immortal “Texas Chain Saw Massacre.”
And that’s just the beginning of the metatextual delights that make “MaXXXine” so special. We thought that we’d talk about five of the movies that fundamentally inspired “MaXXXine.”
Since we’ll be talking about plot specifics, consider this your mild spoiler warning before we get into it.

Despite being hailed by Martin Scorsese as one of the best Italian films of the 1990s, Cemetery Man is criminally underseen. Also known as Dellamorte Dellamore, the 1994 cult classic has been hard to come by in the US since Anchor Bay’s 2006 DVD went out of print, but Severin Films has revived it with a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray edition.
Dario Argento protégé Michele Soavi directs from a script by Gianni Romoli, based on the 1991 novel Dellamorte Dellamore by Tiziano Sclavi — itself a precursor to Sclavi’s influential Italian horror comic Dylan Dog. Rupert Everett (My Best Friend’s Wedding), on whom the Dylan Dog character was visually based, takes on the lead role as Francesco Dellamorte.
As he explains in the noir-esque opening narration, Dellamorte is the watchman for a small town cemetery wherein “some people, on the seventh night after their death, come back to life.” He and his slow-witted but genial assistant,...

"Once the sound of the future, now awesomely retro..." Every month, the Criterion Channel streaming service (one of the best in cinema) debuts a series of programming collections. Each one features a batch of films with a particular theme or connection by actor / director / composer. This is one of the best sets that I need to feature! One of June's latest offerings is Synth Soundtracks - a collection of 20 films featuring synthesizer scores, ranging from classics like Forbidden Planet (1956) and Thief (1981) to more obscure titles like Space Is the Place (1974) and Cat People (1982). Everyone knows Vangelis' iconic synth score for Blade Runner, but this selection went with Vangelis' other film Missing (1982). I enjoy this kind of curation because there's such a range of unique movies, not only expected classics. This also includes: A Clockwork Orange (1971), Shogun Assassin (1980), The Legend of Hell House (1973), Liquid Sky (1982), Tenebrae (1982), For All Mankind (1989), Delta Space...

Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Winding Refn and more sing the Italian director’s praises in this dexterous look back over his career – but his dark side still shines through
There’s a revealing moment at the end of this sturdy documentary about the Italian film-maker Dario Argento, when his daughter Asia remembers his state of mind when he came home from the David di Donatello awards, Italy’s version of the Oscars, in 2019. Over the course of his career – which is still ongoing – 84-year-old Argento had never won a David for any of his strange, unique films, such as Profondo Rosso (1975), Suspiria (1977) or Tenebre (1982) to name just three of his best known. But that year, the Italian Academy gave him a lifetime achievement award. Asia recalls that when they got back from the ceremony, he shrugged and said “sticazzi” – “who cares?”. He only really cares about the work itself, she explains,...

Linnea Quigley has more than earned her spot as a preeminent scream queen. In addition to genre classics like The Return of the Living Dead, Silent Night, Deadly Night, and Night of the Demons, the actress was so prolific throughout the ’80s and ’90s that some of her micro-budget B-movies are still being discovered to this day. Scream Queen is, in fact, the second “lost” Quigley film unearthed by Visual Vengeance, following Heartland of Darkness.
25 years after its inception, Scream Queen is reaching viewers on Blu-ray. The bulk of the flick was shot on S-vhs in less than a week in early 1998 with the rest being piecemealed together on weekends. Post-production was finally completed in 2002, after which it received a blink-and-you-miss-it VHS release. A DVD release was planned in 2012 but fell through at the last minute due to the distributor’s bankruptcy.

When the Trash Man Knocks is a bit of a rarity. While there are the occasional films like Derelicts and Amityville Thanksgiving, there really aren’t that many films set on the busiest time for travel and family gatherings in the US. Writer/director/star Christopher Wesley Moore hopes to use it to leave his mark on the holiday horror calendar with a mix of psychological horror and bloody slasher stylings.
In 1993 young Crispin Callaway (Luke Mayronne; Triggered) hacked up his father and the student he was having an affair with and stuffed their remains into trash bags. Ten years later, just before he was transferred to a maximum security facility, he escaped. He left a dozen dead bodies in his wake and then seemingly vanished.

After the lackluster reception of Inferno, the second entry in his supernaturally inclined Three Mothers trilogy, Dario Argento pivoted back to the giallo genre that he’d helped put on the world-cinema map with the release of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage back in 1970. Not content to merely “return to form,” and plagued by some personal demons of his own, Argento unleashed the supreme meta-giallo Tenebrae, an endlessly reflexive murder mystery about the solving of murder mysteries.
The notion that Tenebrae is primarily concerned with the conditions of its own making is signaled straight away. The first thing we see is a copy of a book also called Tenebrae. A voiceover narrator declaims a passage that describes murder as a liberating, creative act. What’s more, the scene introduces two of the most elemental bits of giallo iconography: the black gloves worn by the killer and a shiny cutthroat razor.

After helping to pioneer Italy’s budding giallo genre throughout the 1970s with influential titles like The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Cat o’ Nine Tails, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, and Deep Red, Dario Argento took a brief sabbatical from the lurid thrillers to explore supernatural elements in Suspiria and Inferno. When the latter failed at the box office, he made a triumphant return to gialli in 1982 with Tenebrae (sometimes spelled Tenebre; originally released in the US as Unsane).
While his American contemporaries were trying to come up with inventive instruments of death to propel slasher films, Argento was designing more lavish ways to film his kill scenes. Suspiria remains his crowning achievement, but Tenebrae finds the filmmaker bringing his honed visual panache to the giallo sandbox in which he made a name for himself. The result stands not only as one of Argento’s strongest efforts but also a landmark giallo work.

Are you ready to dive into the lurid world of essential Giallo horror movies, filled with garish murders, striking visuals, and twisting plots?
Born in the ’60s and thriving throughout the ’70s, Giallo takes its name from the Italian word for “yellow,” a nod to the cheap, pulpy mystery novels with yellow covers that inspired the genre. Characterized by elaborate set pieces, vivid colors, and convoluted plot twists, Giallo films are as intellectual as they are visceral. Renowned directors like Dario Argento and Mario Bava helped define the genre with their visual flair and innovative storytelling.

45 years after its release, Dario Argento‘s Suspiria remains one of the most breathtaking horror films ever committed to celluloid. Its unparalleled visuals – vibrantly colored lighting, unconventional camerawork, opulent production design, extravagant death scenes – are complemented by a memorable score from frequent Argento collaborators, Goblin.
Goblin founding keyboardist Claudio Simonetti now performs with a new manifestation of the prolific Italian instrumental act – officially branded as Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin to avoid confusion with the other incarnation of Goblin featuring different legacy members that remains active concurrently.
Simonetti is accompanied by guitarist Daniele Amador, bassist Cecilia Nappo, and drummer Federico Maragoni. Together they’re celebrating Suspiria‘s 45th anniversary with a tour in which they perform the score live to the film followed by a set of other Goblin classics. I caught the sold-out stop at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, Ma on November 8.

Hello, everyone! We’re back after a brief hiatus to give you a look at the horror and sci-fi headed home this week on home media. As it turns out, the month of August’s releases are starting off on a quiet note, as we have two titles getting the 4K treatment this Tuesday—Dario Argento’s Tenebrae and Flatliners from Joel Schumacher—and then a handful of indie horror arriving on both Blu-ray and DVD: Scream at the Devil, Paranormal Devil, The Farm, and Joker’s Poltergeist.
Flatliners 4K

Known for his impressively eclectic filmography and for helping to launch the careers of several young Hollywood stars of the 80s and 90s, Joel Schumacher tackles the existential question that, at one time or another, haunts us all: what awaits us after we die?

“Funny Pages,” a scruffy, grungy, likably tossed-together sketchbook of a low-budget indie comedy, typifies a paradox that now runs through a great deal of independent cinema. The movie, set in a humdrum New Jersey suburbia, unfolds on the moldy bottom rung of the comic-book ladder. It centers on two friends who are obsessed with drawing their own comics, and it’s about the insular world of geeks and creeps and pervs and weirdos that this brings them into contact with.
Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), at 17, has left the posh home of his parents in Princeton and set up residence in downscale Trenton, where he hangs out at the local comic-book store along with his friend, the sweetly passive, long-haired, acne-ridden Miles (Miles Emanuel), who has a secret crush on him. These two eat, breathe, and sleep comic books. But they’re not into superheroes. To them the comic-book world is all...

How does one even attempt to sum up the sprawling joys of 2018's "Shadow"? Take the operatic and larger-than-life nature of Shakespeare plays, mix in a little Kurosawa influence ("Kagemusha" in particular would likely pair well with this one), wrap it all in a surprisingly humorous tale about courtly intrigue, add in the fact that it just so happens to feature characters wielding umbrellas that unsheathe into countless serrated blades in one of the coolest weapon reveals you'll ever see, and perhaps that comes at least vaguely close to describing the sweeping drama at the heart of Yimou Zhang's film. A complete and utter tonal shift from...

Oscar, BAFTA and Emmy winner Kate Winslet and her daughter Mia Threapleton (“Shadows”) will star in a feature-length episode of the third season of Dominic Savage’s acclaimed Channel 4 series “I Am.”

This article contains Sonic the Hedgehog 2 spoilers.
A certain Punxsutawney groundhog may or may not get to see his shadow each February, but it was in April 2022 we all got our first glimpse of Sonic the Hedgehog’s shadow on the big screen. And for Sega fans who came of age during the Dreamcast’s reign, it was glorious.
Following in the footsteps of the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which concluded with both a tease of Dr. Robotnik’s imminent return and Tails arriving to Green Hills in search of his blue-hued buddy, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 teases a couple of things in its post-credits scene. If you didn’t stay for them (or would like a breakdown of what it all means), please read on…
The Return of Robotnik?
The post-credits scene begins with the U.S. military cleaning up the aftermath of Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s climax.

Shadowhunters was cut short in its prime.
The Freeform drama was canceled after three seasons, and now, fans can look forward to two of its cast members airing their thoughts on the series.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Katherine McNamara and Dominic Sherwood are reuniting to offer their unfiltered opinions on the biggest developments.
Return to the Shadows is the name of the podcast.
If you watch Shadowhunters online, you know that McNamara and Sherwood played the central couple Clary and Jace on the teen drama.
"Creating and shooting Shadowhunters was such a special, unique, life-shaping experience that truly changed us — personally, professionally, and artistically," McNamara says.
"When approached about the podcast, I thought it seemed like the perfect next step to give back and support this beautiful Shadowfam community."
"So, I reached out to Dom to see if he would join me as we both have always sought out ways to do so.

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month we’re diving into a heaping helping of giallo. Now, I’ve never been shy about sharing my misgivings with the giallo subgenre. My inability to get over the cognitive dissonance instilled by the wonky dubbing and the convoluted mystery elements usually keep me from truly loving Italian horror’s most famous import. But although I’m too often underwhelmed by the overall product, I find at least something to like about any giallo I watch. So I’m always up for trying a new one, especially if I get a chance to see the great John Saxon wearing a very silly fedora.
With that in mind, I’m very grateful to this month’s guest, Mark O. Estes, as he’s introducing me to Tenebrae, the 1982 offering from giallo maestro Dario Argento. You may know Estes as...

• Esquire wonderful profile of Jake Gyllenhaal who is (maybe) at a career crossroads
• Shadow and Act suggests actresses for the upcoming Angela Davis biopic. It's certainly going to be a killer role for the right person. Have any suggestions of your own?
• Independent Sydney Sweeney talks about her work on Euphoria and that people aren't paying attention to the performance, just the nudity
• Playbill Antonio Banderas is doing Sondheim's Company as Bobby in Spain right now. He's surely the oldest Bobby ever (at 61 when the plot is very much about being in your 30s) but we'd so love to see this.
