Started out as a project for Mexican director Rafael Castanedo with Diana Bracho attached to play Antonieta. However Castanedo was unable to find sufficient financing for the film and Spanish director Carlos Saura was brought in to take over the project by Margarita López Portillo, who also cast Isabelle Adjani as Antonieta, with Bracho remaining in the film in the smaller role of Juana.
