- Slightly censored when first released in the US, but released without cuts abroad. The Australian version has several more seconds of Wez pulling the arrow out of his arm, and a few more seconds of Wez's partner on the ground with the boomerang embedded in his head. This footage was absent on the US VHS, LaserDisc, and DVD releases, but is present in the US Blu-ray release.
- The Atmos audio track on the new 4K release has many new sound effects added like car engines, gunshots, explosions, and background ambiance. Along with that the volume of the score is lowered significantly. However the original stereo mix and 5.1 track from the old 2007 Blu-ray are included as well and have the original sound effects.
- The initial US release redid the main title with a lightning bolt design to read "THE ROAD WARRIOR" as opposed to "MAD MAX 2". Modern US releases of the film, such as the Blu-Ray, only have the "MAD MAX 2" title.
- In 1984, the film made its US network television debut on NBC in a version that has been referred to by fans as the 'Lost Version'. It contained a great deal of alternate and deleted material that has never been in any other officially released version of the film. This footage is spread out over the entirety of the film and amounts mostly to small scene extensions and the use of alternate takes in order to tone down the film's violence. The most striking difference however, is a totally different narrator (one with an American accent) being heard in the film's opening and closing scenes.
- The opening chase sequence jumps straight into the action with the camera pulling out of the V8's supercharger. This scene was originally shot with Max driving past a farm that Wez and others were ransacking, the bodies of the owners hanging dead from a tree. Seeing Max they all ran to their vehicles and gave chase and there were several cars. The camera then panned out of the car's charger to signify a short passage of time and THEN the scene is as we know it with just Wez and two cars still still in pursuit due to the Interceptor's power.
- In some versions (such as the initial VHS release in Australia and Europe), there is a slightly extended speech from Pappagallo after Humungus' challenge.
