The king had started the lottery years before as a way of keeping the dragon from destroying the village and his kingdom. Many years past, the king's brother, who was king himself then, led an army to slay the dragon, but the dragon slew them all and then began terrorizing the village, slaying villagers, eating livestock and burning people's houses. Casiodorus, rather than trying to kill the dragon, decided to strike a deal with the dragon itself: a periodic lottery would be held involving all the virgin women of the village. The lottery is held at least twice a year, on the equinoxes in Spring and Fall.
