Horror can always be counted on to transform the most innocuous concepts into unsettling nightmares, especially when it comes to exploring themes of parenthood.
In horror, children frequently veer straight into creepy territory with unsettling statements and empty stares. Creepy kids in horror have been a long-running archetype, turning out iconic characters like Antichrist Damien Thorn in The Omen, The Bad Seed’s Rhoda Penmark, and the possessed Regan MacNeil in The Exorcist.
This week’s streaming picks highlight some of horror’s most unnerving children.

August’s home media offerings are wrapping up in a big way this week, and I hope you’ve got your wallets ready because there are a ton of releases that genre fans are going to want to add to their collections. Fulci fans should be excited for the arrival of both The House by the Cemetery and The New York Ripper in 4K, courtesy of Blue Underground, and Severin is having their own Fulci fiesta this week, too, with their releases of Aenigma, Demonia as well as the recent documentary Fulci for Fake.
Scream Factory also has a killer lineup of titles headed home on Tuesday, including the Collector’s Edition of Tales from the Darkside: The Movie and the Universal Horror Collection: Volume 6.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for August 25th include Dead Pit, The Beast Must Die, The Last Victim, Live Feed, Gemini, Hallucinations, and Alien Scum.

It is truly amazing how crowded the zombie market was in the early ‘80s, at least in Europe; after the success of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (1978) begat Lucio Fulci’s unofficial “sequel” Zombie (’79), the floodgates were opened and the undead made their (slow and shuffling) move at the box office. Amidst the barrage was one Burial Ground (1981), a film that boils down a zombie flick to its very essence: people get munched, and they get munched good. Forget social subtext; Burial Ground barely has text.
Aka The Night of Terrors, Burial Ground was released on its home turf of Italy in the summer, with the U.S. not receiving a release until late ’85 before dropping on video in early ’86. There’s really no need to mention reviews from the mainstream: what do you think they would say that would in any way add to the discourse beyond...

As horror fans, we are constantly seeking out the new and the different. Because the genre is marked by so much sameness—sequels, franchises, remakes, copies of copies—it can sometimes be a challenge to find those horror films that truly carve out their own space. They don’t even have to be great movies, necessarily; many times, “different” is enough to make us happy.
With that in mind, here are 10 horror movies currently available on the terrific streaming service Shudder that are, if nothing else, different from almost anything else you’ll watch this October. They vary in quality from title to title, but what even the roughest among them lacks in technical polish, it more than makes up for in sheer maniac insanity. After you’ve cycled through all your favorites this October, why not add a little Wtf to your lineup?

I have to admit I didn’t have many positive expectations for this later-in-life Jess Franco flick. I’m a Franco fan, but not a Franco apologist. I really enjoy a good number of his films but recognize he’s churned out some real clunkers, especially the period immediately after 1987’s Faceless. The reputation of Killer Barbys was less than stellar with even hard-core Franco fans generally dismissing the film. So it was that I received a screener from Kino Lorber and popped the Blu-ray in. I figured I’d watch it once then toss it in the corner and allow it to gather dust. At least I’d have one more Franco film for my collection even if I never opened the case again. However, I was more than pleasantly surprised. I was entertained throughout most of the film. This may say more about my...

Some know it in its original Italian form as Zombi Holocaust (or Zombie Holocaust), while others adore the re-edited Us release known as Doctor Butcher M.D., but with their upcoming two-disc Blu-ray of Marino Girolami’s 1980 horror film, Severin Films aims to please all sides with uncut releases of both versions of the movie.
Featuring over two and a half hours of special features, Severin Films’ Zombie Holocaust / Doctor Butcher M.D. Blu-ray hits shelves on July 26th:
Press Release: It sparked riots on 42nd Street, spawned a generation of gorehounds on VHS, and forever set an insane standard for Italian mad doctor/zombie/cannibal carnage worldwide: Ian McCulloch (Zombie), Alexandra Delli Colli (The New York Ripper), Sherry Buchanan (Tentacles) and Donald O’Brien (Emanuelle And The Last Cannibals) star in this blood orgy of gut-munching, eyeball-gouging and face-chopping originally known as Zombie Holocaust, which a notorious American distributor would then re-edit,...

Usually it wouldn’t bode well for a film when a) it has a generic title like Vampires; and b) when you discover it’s actual title is Bloodless, the very opposite of what you want from a vampire movie… Give me flesh-tearing vampires ripping people apart anyday thanks! But, all prejudices aside, I was still willing to give this British scary movie a shot – mainly in part to one of the films stars, Victoria Hopkins, and its producer, Steve O’Brien. Both names whom you probably aren’t that familiar with but both of whom worked on Zombie Women of Satan. A film who – even to this day – it seems like I’m the only fan of (that was certainly the case after its screening at Frightfest in 2009).

Matteiofthedead returns with Malabimba: The Malicious Whore, some good old fashioned Italian sleaze from the infamous Andrea Bianchi (Strip Nude For Your Killer, Burial Ground). This effort is his take on the possession genre. The film in question is Malabimba, a tale of a young (oh yes folks) girl possessed by an evil and and horny spirit.

One of the most fondly remembered eras in fright-film history is the golden age of Italian gore – a prolific period that brought such directors as Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava and Lucio Fulci to international attention and acclaim. Spawning all number of surreal sub-genres, including black-gloved killer-thrillers and stomach-churning cannibal adventures, this is a time that continues to crib a fresh generation of fascinated fans.
As such, 88 Italian have announced the UK Blu-ray release Zombi Holocaust (1980) and Burial Ground aka Nights of Terror (1981) – a pair of plasma-packed pot-boilers that could only have been dreamt up during the bygone boom in Euro-terror eccentricity.
In Burial Ground, the carcass-crunching action comes thick and fast as veteran director Andrea Bianchi (Strip Nude For Your Killer) evokes the sinister spirit of Lucio Fulci and George Romero. Earlier this week we paid a visit to Dr. Terror's Blog of Horrors for a segment entitled “8 Bits From Hell,” in which Dr. Terror worked with artist and graphic designer Frank Browning (already a FEARnet fave for his work on all those horror ice cream flavors) and electronic musician Sean O'Connor to design vintage-style packaging, screenshots, instructions and 8-bit musical themes for imaginary early '90s-era Nes games that horror fans would have totally killed to possess. At that time we showcased a sweet game mockup based on Lucio Fulci's 1979 classic Zombie, but as we mentioned, that was only one of many splatter flicks to get the 8-bit treatment. Their second round of wish-fulfillment includes an homage to Lamberto Bava's Demons, and the distinctly '80s look of that film lends itself perfectly to the retro game vibe – all the way down to O'Connor's recreation of the main...

Italy has frequently been at the forefront of European cinema as a trendsetter in the annals of exploitation cinema. Without Italy, we wouldn’t have the Mondo film or Gialli. Who else would have supplied us with Amazonian cannibals, nasty Nazis or demented nuns in such a pleasing manner?
Italy has always been awash with cinematic talent. And it is a country that doesn’t mind doing sexy, doing off beat, to be a little daring. The amount of wonderful exploitation directors has ensured that Italy has produced some of the most amazing horror films, cult oddities, documentaries and pornos.
I have listed the foremost Italian exploitation film directors that I can think of.. If you have a particular Italian director that you admire that I have missed out, please let’s have a discussion below.

People in horror movies do the darndest things, don't they? We've all had a "Don't go in there, you idiot!" moment or twelve while watching fright flicks. Horror sure does bring out the stupids.
This counter-intuitive behavior makes it seem like these folks are handing over their lives on a silver platter, so in honor of this weekend's "Evil Dead" let's celebrate the good, the bad and the dumber-than-a-bag-of-hammers of the genre. Appropriately enough, our first entry comes from that franchise.

Zombies have become so trendy in the past ten years. People who barely know what the undead are about will tell you that they just love zombies. There are Ya novels about zombies; there are bumper stickers that reference the zombie apocalypse. But, most people that profess an undying love for these revenants know little or nothing about zombie cinema, prior to 28 Days Later. Obviously, we think that lack of knowledge is totally uncool.
As any good horror fan knows, George A. Romero was instrumental in popularizing zombie cinema and deserves most of the credit for the ‘zombie mania’ that exists today. However, there is a veritable plethora of zombie cinema that came out of Europe in the ‘70s and ‘80s that the casual horror fan may not be intimately familiar with. This week in horror saw the birth of the man behind The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Poltergeist, and Lifeforce, Tobe Hooper. He doesn’t need an introduction, but let’s have a moment of silence for this genre-changing director.
1981 gave us Andrea Bianchi’s Italian gore-fest, Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror. Notable for its near total lack of plot and bloody zombie breast-feeding scene, Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror, aka The Zombie Dead, starts with zombies snacking on a bearded professorial-type and ends with a bunch of zombies munching on a group of over-sexed couples. There are also zombie monks in the mix, zombie Etruscans, some mother-son-fondling, and a number of killer garden tools. It was written by Piero Regnoli whose credits include Nightmare City.

It just seemed that it was soooo terrifying that they couldnt show you anything (Hey, I was young)! One such movie was Burial Ground: The nights of Terror. The film opens with Professor Ares (Renato Barbieri) studying ancient ruins in a cave. Unfortunately for him, sometimes things are better left where th…...

For the week of March 27th, sleaze fans are fortunate to have two gialli hitting store shelves from amazing companies Blue Underground and Mondo Macabro. The more notorious of the two is Blue Underground's Blu-ray upgrade of Andrea Bianchi's (Burial Ground) Strip Nude for Your Killer, which is among the more depraved of the higher profile gialli available. A bit lower on the notoriety scale is Mondo Macabro's DVD debut of the uncut William Rose giallo The Girl in Room 2A (Casa Della Paura). Both films promise a lot in their marketing, but don't quite manage to accomplish the mania hinted at in their trailers or their posters, but they are exploitation films, so some of that is to be expected.I don't think anyone has...

Baltimore -- Edgar Allan Poe fans waited long past a midnight dreary, but it appears annual visits to the writer's grave in Baltimore by a mysterious figure called the "Poe Toaster" shall occur nevermore.
Poe House and Museum Curator Jeff Jerome said early Thursday that die-hard fans waited hours past when the tribute bearer normally arrives. But the "Poe Toaster" was a no-show for a third year in a row, leaving another unanswered question in a mystery worthy of the writer's legacy. Poe fans had said they would hold one last vigil this year before calling an end to the tradition.
"It's over with," Jerome said wearily. "It will probably hit me later, but I'm too tired now to feel anything else."
It is thought that the tributes of an anonymous man wearing black clothes with a white scarf and a wide-brimmed hat, who leaves three roses and a half-empty...

Ever read Pet Sematary? The family cat gets run over by a truck. Such a sad thing, to see a pretty cat struck down in its prime. That cat could have amused the family for years! Fortunately for the family, their house is just a few doors down from the local Indian Burial Ground. Dad makes an executive decision and uses the Burial Ground magic to bring the cat back to life. Good as new! Better than ever! Except that the resurrected cat is different somehow. Stranger. Less fun. He’s not as energetic. He smells like death. At a certain point,...

On Tuesday September 20th at 7:30 at the Hollywood Theatre, the Grindhouse Film Festival presents a rare 35mm print of the Italian horror classic Burial Ground: Nights Of Terror.
Burial Ground: Nights Of Terror (1981) The king of the Italian zombie gut munchers! A group of vacationers visit an old isolated manor. Unfortunately, a professor has recently opened a crypt on the property, unleashing a horde of vicious zombies. Time for the blood to flow and the guts to spill. Also, in the strangest casting decision in cinema history, a thirtysomething young man plays a ten year old child with an Oedipus complex. Extreme sleaze, gruesome gore, and Italian weirdness run rampant, all accompanied by a groovy synthesized soundtrack.

True Grit
You can’t replace The Duke, but the Coen Brothers sure as hell proved you can remake one of his films, perhaps even better than one would expect. While Duke’s 1969 Oscar-winning performance is as good as any, don’t let that ruin this film. It’s as good as any recent western. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Buy Donny says: Buy
Sanctum
Despite James Cameron’s name being plastered all over this film’s marketing, it lacks his quality. Based on a true story, the film is rather interesting in concept than execution.

Cult Collectibles is proud to announce the release of its first "Weird Wobbler" bobblehead style figure from one of the most outrageous underground films ever made: Black Devil Doll!
The 2008 film is the story of an executed Black militant who is reincarnated into a vicious ventriloquist’s puppet, causing endless mayhem and murder (to put it mildly). Widely hailed by cult film aficionados and simultaneously condemned for its overt (yet completely tongue-in-cheek) offensiveness, Art Ettinger of Ultra Violent magazine stated, "Black Devil Doll is a triumph, seamlessly blending crass un-pc humor with cerebral artistry. The Lewis Brothers deliver one of the most original exploitation films of the new millennium, a singularly unique mix of brain and brawn.

If you read my post on day one of the 9th Fantastic Films Weekend that took place in Bradford last weekend, you’ll know how impressed I was with the lectures given on the first day as part of the TimeCode series of lectures by Bradford University. The talks, held under the ‘Fantasma’ banner, were on a variety of subjects – from British Sex Cinema, to The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue, to Italian Horror Cinema… and it’s the Italian Horror Cinema lecture that I managed to captured in it’s entirety (a full 40 minutes) and have embedded for you delectation below.
The lecture is by ‘Independent Academic’ Russ Hunter, and covers a wide range of Italian Horror, and offers a historical perspective on a much maligned sub-genre – the lecture also featured video of a disemboweling from Zombie Holocaust or the infamous breast-chomping scene from Burial Ground, aka Nights of Terror,...

Today marked the start of the 9th Fantastic Films Weekend at the National Media Museum in Bradford, West Yorkshire and despite some teething problems, both technical and personnel, I’d say the opening day was a hit.
The main part of today’s festivities was taken up by Fantasma, a special symposium on horror featuring lectures from I.Q. Hunter, David Robinson, Russ Hunter and Jeremy Dyson (who you may know from The League of Gentlemen). The highlight of these lectures were the talks given by I.Q. Hunter and Russ Hunter (no relation).
I.Q. Hunter’s talk on British Sex Films covered the gamut of British exploitation cinema, from the more mainstream Confessions… movies to lesser known films such as Permissive. Judging by his talk, Hunter seems to have taken up the reigns laid down by filmmaker and critic David McGillivray, who is seen as the premiere spokesperson...

The Alamo Guide
for March 4th, 2010
Ah March… the sun is shining, the trees are greening and people from all over the world are about to invade our fair city for SXSW and give us their money. You gotta love the few weeks of spring we get in Texas. Pretty soon it’s going to be hot as balls. Sure, it’ll drop down to 35 probably at some point, but worry not, it’ll be 80 the next day.If you haven’t been into the theater since last week, we put our new Spring Menu Specials up! They are crazy tasty, and come highly recommended from everyone at Alamo HQ. Some of those specials are for the big opener this weekend, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland In 3D! I’ve loved Tim Burton for years, and I love Alamo feasts, so you can find me at the Alice Five-course Feast next Wednesday.
