David E. Diano, a veteran camera operator with credits including Tombstone, The Fast and the Furious, Wedding Crashers and Spider-Man 3, has died. He was 71.
Diano died Jan. 22 at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena of coronary issues after a battle with prostate cancer, his wife, still photographer Gemma Lamana, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Diano served as president of the Society of Camera Operators from 2003-04 before deciding not to run for a second term.
“To write that David was a one-of-a-kind friend to those of us who worked with him would be an understatement,” Soc historical chair Michael Frediani said in a statement. “His kindness, artistry and boyish smile endeared him to countess friends and fellow industry colleagues — and that is what set him apart from many,”
Diano shot 17 movies for cinematographer William Fraker, a six-time Oscar nominee, from 1983-2002. Those films included War Games (1983), Murphy’s Romance (1985), Baby Boom (1987), Memoirs of an Invisible Man...

When it came to primetime adult animated sitcoms of the '90s and early '00s, "King of the Hill" was somewhat of an outlier. It was steeped in suburban realism, trusting the audience to find the humor in co-creator Mike Judge's observational, mundane sensibility. While the show's contemporaries like "Family Guy" or "The Simpsons" (which sparked competition with the show over its use of guest stars) embraced a cartoony wackiness, "King of the Hill" adopted a relaxed, comfortable tone. And who better to command that tone than a character like Hank Hill (Judge)?
For one thing, Hank was an unusual choice to lead a sitcom. Where "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" made a point of their lead patriarchs being very dumb and oblivious, Hank was smart and competent. Superficially, he probably looked a little boring, and there was little about Hank that would seem to lend itself to comedy.

Netflix long has been asked whether it eventually would move into live sports. Ted Sarandos, co-ceo of the streamer, revealed Tuesday during the company’s first-quarter earnings call, what it would need to make that happen.
He said he wasn’t so sure that it could add a “big profit stream” with the addition of live sports. “I’m not saying that we’ll never do sports, but we’ll have to see a path to growing a big revenue stream and a great profit stream with it,” he said.
The comments come as the streamer’s interest in sports-adjacent content grows. It has had success with the Formula 1: Drive To Survive docuseries – credited with growing interest in the motorsport in the U.S. as it recently premiered its fourth season. It also has similar projects around NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace and golf’s PGA Tour.

“We Are Lady Parts” is a sly wink to the audience, a rebel yell from its characters, and an interrogation of our assumptions. In the six-episode half-hour comedy from showrunner, director, and writer Nida Manzoor, the jokes, sight gags, and fantasy sequences fly fast and furious. The friendships and romantic relationships are tenderly developed and organically rendered. And the cast of Middle Eastern, Arab, South Asian, Black, and biracial actresses and actors who embody this nuanced, thoughtful, confrontational, and adoring portrait of modern Muslims are summarily pitch-perfect.

Berlin, March 24 (Ians) Sebastian Vettel knows he will have to be patient when he starts his latest Formula One adventure with the Aston Martin team.
"You have to give the whole thing time," the four-time world champion has said, Dpa news reports.
But the 33-year-old German eventually wants to return to the top after six mainly difficult years at Ferrari where he didn't win another title and where his contract was eventually not extended beyond 2020.

Known as Racing Point until last year, the team finished fourth in the 2020 constructors' standings. Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll funded the team and has also acquired a large stake at Aston Martin as the famed British...

John Boyega and Robert De Niro will star together in a crime thriller called “The Formula” at Netflix, and Gerard McMurray, the director of “The First Purge” and Netflix’s “Burning Sands,” will direct.
McMurray will write, direct and produce the film based on an original idea but that’s reminiscent of “Drive” about a Formula One racing prodigy who becomes a getaway driver in order to care for and rescue his family.
De Niro will also produce “The Formula” along with Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh.
Rosenthal and Welsh have an overall deal with Netflix, and “The Formula” came together under that arrangement. Jason Michael Berman is executive producing the film, and Ephraim Walker, working under McMurray’s banner Buppie Productions, is co-producing, as is Sam Shaw.
Boyega, who broke out in the latest “Star Wars” trilogy, most recently starred in one of the five installments of Steve McQueen’s “Small Axe” anthology,...

John Boyega. Robert De Niro. “The First Purge.” Separately, they’re all enjoyable in their own right. Together? We’re intrigued, if not a bit optimistic. But you can’t deny that a project combining Boyega and De Niro with the filmmaker behind “The First Purge” is a bit surprising on paper.

Bahrain, Dec 6 (Ians) India's Jehan Daruvala on Sunday recorded his first Formula 2 victory after winning the Sakhir Grand Prix sprint race as Mick Schumacher won the 2020 championship despite finishing 18th.
Daruvala, 22, had a good launch from second on the grid and was up alongside pole sitter Daniel Ticktum. Tictum squeezed Daruvala on the inside which allowed championship leader Schumacher to go around the outside of both of them.
Eventually, Ticktum emerged in the lead, followed by Schumacher and Daruvala in third. A few corners later, Daruvala made a good move to pass Schumacher and get into second.
The pair battled for a few laps for the position with Daruvala going back to third and passed Schumacher again a few laps later to regain the position.
He eventually managed to put distance on the German, who will race in Formula 1 for Haas next season, and caught the race leader.

Ginny Weds Sunny(Disney-Hotstar)
Starring Vikrant Massey, Yami Gautam
Just when you begin to think that 2021 can’t get any worse, Ginny Weds Sunny comes along, a film so devoid of qualities you struggle for two hours thinking of a reason why you should see this abomination to its conclusion when simply giving up and walking off would be a better option.
For those who have been trying to convince you into believing that ‘Ginny’ Yami Gautam and ‘Sunny’ Vikrant Massey can actually sustain an anorexic imbecilic plot about a man who can’t find a suitable match and a woman who can’t decide whom to marry and her immature spoilt rich fiancé who wants it all and wants it now (dial ‘M’ for Manmarziyan) , here’s the thing: sorry, they can’t.

Director John G. Avildsen has passed away from pancreatic cancer. He had an eclectic body of work that began in earnest with his work as a cinematographer on several high profile films of the 1960s including "Hurry Sundown" and "Mickey One". Avildsen graduated to the director's chair with the surprise indie hit "Joe" in 1970 a serio-comic look at an ultra conservative working man (Peter Boyle) whose rage boils over from what he believes are anti-American protest movements against the Vietnam War. Three years later Avildsen directed the acclaimed drama "Save the Tiger" which won Jack Lemmon the Best Actor Oscar. In 1976 he directed the most unlikely of blockbusters, "Rocky", which won the Best Picture Oscar. Avildsen took home the Best Director award. He also scored with the "Karate Kid" franchise and also directed the zany comedy "Neighbors" with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as well as "The Formula" with Marlon Brando...

Once again 2012 saw the passing of another cult favorite with the death of one of the exploitation cinema’s greatest villains. On 19 June 2012, the versatile and highly underrated Richard Lynch was found dead at his home in Yucca Valley, California by his good friend, actress Carol Vogel. She had not heard from him for several days and turned up at his home only to find his front door ajar and the actor’s body in the kitchen.
The death of Richard Lynch marked an end to a career that many fans felt should have been a lot better. After a promising start in films following extensive theatre training, Lynch never achieved the major success he deserved. It was a big shame because had real screen presence. He always brought a raw and dangerous edge to his many cinema and TV roles, that was made all the more powerful by his handsome,...

They've tried everything. One host. Two hosts. Four hosts. 32 hosts. Comic hosts. Serious-thespian hosts. Hollywood-legend hosts. Young hosts. Old hosts. Hip hosts. Square hosts. Singing-and-dancing hosts. Every year, it seems, the Academy Awards goes back to the drawing board to figure out what sort of emcee will keep the show lively, attract viewers (especially younger viewers) and keep them from flipping channels during the slow parts. It's a thankless gig; no wonder Billy Crystal, who's done it eight times, decided to sit out for eight years before agreeing to return to host this year's Academy Awards on Sunday night. The job requires a difficult and rare set of skills: a host must entertain both the Hollywood big-shots in the auditorium and regular folks at home. They can poke fun at the huge egos in the room, but can't deflate them with too much snark, and they can't be too inside-baseball.

Veteran actress Marthe Keller, among whose credits are Claude Lelouch's And Now My Love and John Schlesinger's Marathon Man, will be inducted as a chevalier ("knight") in the French Legion of Honor, a civilian distinction that has been around since the early 1800s. Born in Basel, Switzerland, Keller will turn 67 next Jan. 28. In the last 45 years, she has appeared in more than 40 films, whether in leading or supporting roles. Apart from the aforementioned — ludicrous but financially successful — Marathon Man, in which she was featured opposite Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier, Keller wasn't very lucky in her several Hollywood try-outs in the late '70s. She was a terrorist in John Frankenheimer's thriller Black Sunday (1977); romanced Al Pacino in Sydney Pollack's expensive autoracing flop Bobby Deerfield (1977); and was a mysterious Greta Garbo-like former actress pursued by William Holden in Billy Wilder's bomb Fedora (1978). Keller's last...

Character actor who portrayed smarmy politicians, sadistic generals and unspeakable authoritarian figures
There is a scene in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather: Part II (1974) that crystallises the entire film career of the character actor Gd Spradlin, who has died aged 90. As the corrupt senator Pat Geary, Spradlin asks the mafia boss Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) for a bribe, so that he can grant gaming licences to the "family" for several casinos in Nevada. During the meeting, Geary launches into an attack on the Corleones, a name he pronounces with derision. "I intend to squeeze you. I don't like your kind of people. I don't like to see you come out to this clean country with oily hair and trussed up in those silk suits trying to pass yourselves off as decent Americans. I'll do business with you, but the fact is I despise you masquerading in the dishonest way you pose yourself.

Marlon Brando is the first star in the 2011 edition of Turner Classic Movies' annual Summer Under the Stars series, which kicks off August 1. [Marlon Brando Movie Schedule.] Unfortunately, none of the 11 scheduled Marlon Brando movies is a TCM premiere; in fact, nearly all of them were shown on Brando Day three years ago. In other words, don't expect The Island of Dr. Moreau, Morituri, A Bedtime Story, Burn!, A Dry White Season, or The Appaloosa. And certainly no frolicking with Maria Schneider in Last Tango in Paris. That's too bad. But then again, those who would like to check out Julius Caesar for the 118th time will be able to do so. And perhaps they won't be sorry, as this great-looking Joseph L. Mankiewicz effort remains one of the best-liked film adaptations of a Shakespeare play. Those not into Shakespeare can take a look at The Fugitive Kind and A Streetcar Named Desire, both from Tennessee Williams' plays.

While writing this review, I became unstuck in time. Suddenly, I was seeing stars on Halloween 1988 in New York City, then shooting off to Australia to meet people in February 1993 followed by Christmas caroling edged with snowflakes in 1974 West Virginia. Before I knew what I was doing, I was watching The Hunger in a Manhattan screening room in 1983. And then Chicago, briefly, in the 1990s, don’t know exactly when—July something. The women kept changing. But they were the same in that they all married someone else, not me. What’s up with that?
