Richard Kiel was initially cast as the Hulk, but shortly after filming began, it became apparent to the producers that he wasn't "bulky" enough to play the role. There is, however, an intact but brief high-angle scene with Kiel as the Hulk (when he looks up at a tree).
Dr. Banner was named Bruce in the comics, but is renamed David for this telefilm. The tombstone at the end of the episode reveals his full name to be David Bruce Banner. This is actually partially consistent with the comics, in which his full name is Robert Bruce Banner.
Shooting of the pilot wrapped on Saturday morning June 18th at 5.30 am. Writer/director Kenneth Johnson married his wife Susan the next day, Sunday June 19th 1977.
Shot in 18 days.
The scene where the Hulk interacts with the little girl at the lake is reminiscent of the scene in Frankenstein (1931) where the monster sees a little girl sitting by a lake after escaping the castle. The approach of the Hulk is shot in nearly the same way as the monster's. The difference is that in The Incredible Hulk the girl is frightened by the Hulk and in Frankenstein she happily interacts with the Monster.
