Late last week, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that a scripted series about U2 is coming to Netflix via J.J. Abrams and Bohemian Rhapsody screenwriter Anthony McCarten. “Details of U2’s involvement are being kept under wraps,” reads the report, “though sources say the band behind hits including ‘With or Without You’ and ‘Pride (In the Name of Love)’ is expected to be involved and sanction the project.”

Soulful singer-songwriter Bill Withers, best known for a string of hits that includes “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean On Me,” has died from heart complications. He was 81.
“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father,” Withers’ family said in a statement to the Associated Press. “A solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world at large with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other. As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.”
The three-time Grammy Award winner released eight albums before retiring from music in 1985. However, his inspiration and influence on artists, films, and music fans has never stopped. Even today, amidst the coronavirus pandemic,...

Cl, one of the most successful K-pop crossover artists in the history of the genre, has returned with “DONE161201,” her first solo project in three years. Paired with the single “REWIND170205,” the tracks will appear on her upcoming LP In the Name of Love. The video for “DONE161201” features cameos from Grimes, Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas, Sohee of Wonder Girls and Cl’s former bandmates from 2NE1, singing along in what appears to be a homemade film released this month.

‘Defend, Conserve, Protect.’
Stephen Amis’ film examining the long-running campaign to stop Japanese fishermen killing whales in the Southern Ocean was named best international feature documentary at the American Documentary Film Festival.
Four years in the making, Defend, Conserve, Protect had its its world premiere at the festival which ran from March 29 – April 4 in Palm Springs, California.
Produced by Amis, Sea Shepherd Australia MD Jeff Hansen and Sea Shepherd colleague Omar Todd, the doc follows a young, passionate and fearless group of Sea Shepherd activists in their battle to defend the Minke whales as well as exploring the global marine activism movement and the importance of the world’s oceans.
“It’s wonderful for the movie to be recognised abroad and of course we are very happy to promote the incredible work of Sea Shepherd and their ocean conservation programs,” Amis, who attended the premiere, tells If.

“Omaggio al Maestro Ennio Morricone”- CD sleeve.
Cineploit Records launches two new releases“Omaggio al Maestro Ennio Morricone” (Cine 20) and “Omaggio a Joe D´Amato e Marcello Giombini” (Exploit 01) 7″ Ep to mark their 5 year anniversary.

The group is forced to separate in the latest episode of The Walking Dead prequel, Fear The Walking Dead...
This review contains spoilers.
2.7 Shiva
One of the things The Walking Dead does every season is scatter the survivors to the four winds for mid-season finales, then they bring them back together over the course of the next half of the season. Taking a page from Hershel's farm once again, Fear The Walking Dead ends the episode with the cast scattered around the Mexican countryside. On one side, there are zombies. On the other side, angry workers looking to get revenge for their dead relatives. In the middle, as always, Victor Strand and his allies, who find themselves on the outs after wreaking a little havoc in the supposed safe zone.
The cracks appeared almost immediately. After all, Celia worked pretty hard at extracting Nick, the most vulnerable one of the group,...

Fear The Walking Dead revisits a plot familiar from its parent show in its latest episode, but handles it even better...
This review contains spoilers.
2.6 Sicut Cervus
One of the problems that Fear The Walking Dead is going to face is that it's several seasons behind the parent show. That gives the spinoff a little more breathing room to include some luxuries, like television and electricity/water, but it also means that it is going to have to work harder not to accidentally recycle plot lines form the original series. Or, in some cases, they can recycle the plot but do it better than in the original series.
The second season of The Walking Dead is the farm season. The gang spent a whole season just hanging out on Hershel's farm while looking for Sophia. Well, in case you've forgotten, Sophia was there on the farm with them,...

The crew of the Abigail try a risky play this week, but they can't seem to stop screwing up...
This review contains spoilers
2.5: Captive
The boaters on board the Abigail are increasingly facing tough decisions. They're trying to hold onto old-world values, but they're increasingly running into post-apocalyptic problems. An injured man isn't just an injured man anymore; he's now a liability, a ticking zombie time-bomb. Two episodes ago, Strand disposed of the ticking time bomb that was Alex (whose name has changed from Charlie during her first appearance, apparently) by cutting her loose, quite literally. As it turns out, turning your back on those in need can either save you or end you, and turning your back on family is just not something to even be considered. When you have someone who you trust to watch your back, you stick with them like glue, even...

With more episodes in its second season, Fear The Walking Dead has the time to slow down and let plot developments breathe...
This review contains spoilers.
2.4 Blood In The Streets
With an expanded second season, Fear The Walking Dead seems to be able to let things breathe a little more than we got in the first season. The beginning felt kind of rapid fire, things happening one after the other after the other until we end up in a burning mansion on the California coast with a mysterious guy in a suit and his $10 million dollar boat. It made for interesting television, and it kept things moving reasonably well, even if they didn't linger enough on the things I wanted to see for reasons of time or budget.
However, the second season seems to be taking a different pace. It wasn't all that long ago that Alicia...

Just when we were sure that we had Strand figured out, kaboom! Fear the Walking Dead torpedoed our misperceptions this week, revealing that we didn’t know diddly about the Abigail’s enigmatic captain. What’s more, “Blood in the Streets” introduced Alicia’s “radio crush,” Jack, in the flesh, unveiled a more cunning side to Nick’s sister (and wasn’t it about time?) and renewed our faith in Madison’s instincts. And that was just for starters. Read on, and we’ll go over all of the hour’s highlights!

Quentin Tarantino revealed that composer Ennio Morricone would provide the score for the director's upcoming Western The Hateful Eight during that film's Comic-Con panel in San Diego. With The Hateful Eight, Morricone is returning to the Spaghetti Western genre for the first time in four decades. The Italian composer previously provided the legendary scores for classic Westerns like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West and My Name is Nobody.

The third track on one of my favorite rock records of the last decade, Okkervil River’s The Stage Names, is called “A Hand to Take Hold of the Scene.” Without context, its lyric is a bit of a tough nut to crack. Will Sheff sings about events unfolding on a TV screen in the first verse, recaps a dream in the second, and seems to outline the narrator’s innermost wishes in the third. What’s not immediately apparent is that the first verse outlines scenes from two completely different TV shows – scenes that happened to be scored by Okkervil River songs. The first half of the verse refers to “It Ends With a Fall” (from Down the River of Golden Dreams) and its use on the reality series Breaking Bonaduce. (I don’t have that clip handy.) The second half, and probably the more illustrative of the two in any case,...

But last week, American outlets picked up on a small story in the Italian press where Morricone had allegedly told a group of students at Rome’s Luiss University that he did not care to work with Tarantino again, and that he was unhappy with how he used his song “Ancora Qui” in Django Unchained.

Lawless; The Girl; The Imposter
Australian-born film-maker John Hillcoat is an often underrated auteur whose arresting filmography spans the broiling prison rebellion of Ghosts… of the Civil Dead, through the rugged western terrain of The Proposition to the bleak apocalypse of The Road, the last beautifully (but unpopularly) adapted from Cormac McCarthy's famously "unfilmable novel". Collaborating frequently with writer and composer Nick Cave, Hillcoat returns obsessively to themes of familial loyalty and modern mythology, with a quasi-biblical sense of archetypal justice and retribution often firing the infernal engine of his dramas.
Fittingly, family, mythology and vengeful justice are all at the heart of Lawless (2012, Momentum, 18), screenwriter Cave's adaptation of Matt Bondurant's visceral historical novel The Wettest County in the World. Handsomely set in prohibition-era Virginia (Benoît Delhomme's location cinematography conjures a perfect blend of pastoral lyricism and brutal violence), the film follows the changing fortunes of the Bondurant brothers,...

"The X Factor" welcomed Caitlin Koch to the stage Thursday night (Sept. 22). She is a willowy blonde rugby player/coach who knocked a out a slow-jam version of "Stop (In the Name of Love)." It was awesome.

And Paula praises her "great individual, authentic voice." Absolutely. SHe's so pretty, too. She could do very well in this competition. What did you think, "X Factor" viewers?...

How did you like the premiere of "The X Factor" Wednesday night? We aren't really sure the show actually has the x factor it is looking for - what did you think?
We did love, love, love Chris Rene, though.
Bienvenido a Miami
Ashley Sansone is our first audition. She's a little crazypants, so I'm not optimistic about her vocal stylings. I do fully expect her to bust, "No time! There's never anytime! I don't have time to study! ... I'm so excited! I'm so excited! I'm so [sob] scared!" Seriously, lay off the speed, girlfriend. Predictably, her singer is awful. Moving on.
She leads into a whole montage of crazypants Miami folk. "Feisty" is not the word I would use, L.A. Reid.
Randomly, Gloria Estefan is there to work the crowd. Maybe she can come be Steve Jones' warm-up host in Los Angeles when they get to the live shows.

Screaming, wailing, flailing and bemoaning. That seems to be the soundtrack “The X-Factor,” i.e. “American Idol” sorta kinda if A.I. let groups, old people, children and naked men audition.

While Simon Cowell is surely disappointed with 'The X Factor' (Thu., 8Pm Et on Fox) not coming out and dominating the ratings the way 'American Idol' does every year, the premiere was still a solid premiere for the network, and there's always room to grow.
He's going to do that by showing us amazing singers and amazing stories, like rugby coach and player Caitlin Koch in this second episode. She put a new twist on 'Stop! In the Name of Love' and captures the spirit of what the show could be.
But it spent so long early in the episode getting us to those types of performances that give us goosebumps, that Cowell's going to lose what audience he did muster up for the premiere. He needs to sprinkle brilliance throughout these early episodes, or we're going to wonder if...

If Wednesday night's "X Factor" premiere focused primarily on positive auditions and warm-and-fuzzy backstories, Thursday's (September 22) episode upended that formula by highlighting failed singers and auditions that went nowhere.
The episode began in Miami, where not even a pep talk from Gloria Estefan could rile up any good fortune for the masses. A parade of hapless singers marched before the judges, with some of their stories backed by the sort of cozy instrumental beds that usually foreshadow a pass from the judges, only to have them, in the end, not quite pass muster with Simon Cowell and his crew. It wasn't until halfway through the first hour when the first singer was given the thumbs up to go to the next round.

Cable TV has a tradition, I think begun with The Sopranos, where the second-to-last episode of any given season is the one where the serious sh*t goes down. In other words, the penultimate episode is usually the ultimate one, at least in terms of awesomeness.
That’s certainly been the case with True Blood in seasons past. And from this latest episode, it seems to be a pattern that now continues, with several storylines neatly tied up in a pat 50 minutes. And then something else happens that’s so surprising, I’m still trying to get my head around it.
All that and some brilliant Pam one-liners made this an episode to remember …
Goodnight Moon (Goddess Emporium)

Over the course of two hours at U2′s 360 Tour show last night in Philadelphia, Bono mentioned Burma, the Middle East and AIDS in Africa. He devoted songs to Gabrielle Giffords (her husband Mark Kelly made a taped appearance from space) and Nelson Mandela. Amnesty International members brought lanterns out on the stage and Burmese political prisoner (released last November) Aung San Suu Kyi made a videotaped impassioned plea.

It was a lonesome Father's Day for Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The embattled former California governor had lunch with his 13-year-old son Christopher at Marmalade Cafe in Malibu, but the rest of his children--Patrick, Katherine, and Christina--were absent.
Patrick, who is vacationing with friends in Greece, gave his Dad a twitter shout out instead.
"#happyfathersday to all the dads out there! Shout out to my dad and the best father i could ever ask for. Love you so much always!" he tweeted.
Schwarzenegger's estranged wife Maria Shriver--also absent from the Father's Day festivities--spent the weekend shopping for antiques and attending a U2 concert in Anaheim, during which Bono serenaded her.
"For Maria Shriver who's here tonight," he said before singing "Pride (In The Name Of Love)."
Shriver and Schwarzenegger separated in early May amid revelations that he fathered a child with former household staffer Mildred Patricia Baena.

Despite his incredible talents, Álex de la Iglesia’s is a director that continues to go unnoticed by most cinephiles. He’s a genius when working with dark comedies as seen in his previous films The Day of the Beast, Perdita Durango, The Commonwealth and Perfect Crime. His latest feature The Last Circus, a parody about the Spanish Civil War, follows two clowns who attack and disfigure one another in a jealous rage over a beautiful dancer. In the name of love, they eventually destroy the very object of their affection and therefore destroy themselves. Here is the trailer. Enjoy!

Everett Collection Amber Riley as Mercedes Jones on “Glee”
Two weeks ago on “Glee,” Mercedes posed the question some viewers may have been wondering since the beginning of the series: how come she never gets to be the star? Further, and perhaps more importantly, why is she the only African-American principal on the show?
The glee club, on the show and in the American psyche, is not for the cool kids. It operates instead as the home for a diverse group of outcasts,...

There is only one nominee that will win and should win say Gold Derby's music experts David Schnelwar and Darrin Dortch, while just one other could be the spoiler. This is the fourth of six country categories with predictions made already for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, Best Male Country Vocal Performance and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Best Country Collaboration With Vocals “Bad Angel,” Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert & Jamey Johnson “Pride (In the Name of Love), “ Dierks Bentley, Del McCoury & The Punch Brothers “As She’s Walking Away,” Zac Brown Band & Alan Jackson “Hillbilly Bone,” Blake Shelton & Trace Adkins “I Run To You,” Marty Stuart & Connie Smith David's take: I think Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert and Jamey Johnson's "Bad Angel" will win because all three of them are nominated for Best Country Album. U2 frontman Bono marked the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death on Wednesday, December 8 by singing The Beatles songs throughout the band's gig in Australia. Lennon was gunned down outside his New York apartment on December 8, 1980 and fans flocked to the Big Apple to mark the poignant anniversary, while tributes were paid all across the world.
The Irish rockers were in Brisbane, Australia on Wednesday and the singer proved he had not forgotten the landmark date by launching into an anthem by the Fab Four during their show at the Suncorp Stadium. After finishing a rendition of U2's "Beautiful Day", Bono stirred the crowd by performing a segment from The Beatles' "In My Life".
He went on to sing a number of the band's hits, including "Rain", "Dear Prudence", and "All You Need Is Love", as well as Ben E. King's "Stand by Me", which was covered by Lennon in the 1970s.

At this point, perhaps we can officially declare Eminem's comeback to be complete. He's already got the year's best-selling album (and a pair of the biggest singles), and now, well, he's the most-nominated artist of the 53rd annual Grammy Awards.
On Wednesday night (December 1), Em picked up a staggering 10 Grammy nods, including Song and Record of the Year (for "Love the Way You Lie") and Album of the Year (for Recovery, which is also up for Rap Album of the Year). He also scored noms for Best Rap Solo Performance (for "Not Afraid"), Pop Collaboration With Vocals (for his turn on B.o.B's "Airplanes Part II") and Best Rap Song (for "Lie").

It’s that time of the year already! The 53rd annual Grammy nominations (for 2011) were announced last night and it’s safe to say that Eminem made a clean sweep popping up in 10 categories. Love the Way you Lie is up for Song and Record of the Tear while Recovery has received nominations for Album and Rap Album of the Year. Just for a quick memory jog, remember who was a big winner at last year’s Grammys? Beyonce! Other big nominees this year include Bruno Mars with seven nominations, and Jay-z, Lady Gaga and Lady Antebellum with six each. John Legend and B.o.B follow closely with five. Katy Perry, who’s performing for VH1 Divas Salute the Troops (Sunday, Dec. 5, at 9/8c), scored four nominations, including one for Album of the Year for Teenage Dream. What’s your take on the nominees this year? Did anyone get left out?...

I've seen a lot of comments about how this episode had a plot, and it did. It had tons of plot. But it also had a theme, and I don't mean a musical theme. In fact, musically this episode was kind of forgettable.
Everything in "Never Been Kissed" was about things being the opposite of what they seem – Coach Bieste, who's hard and tough on the outside, turns out to be soft and lonely on the inside. Tough guy Puck is scared and runs away, and Kurt stands up and fights back against the abusive slushy-tossing football goon, who turns out to be a serious closet case. And, in case anyone out there missed it, we had the big thematic anvil of this week's Glee Club challenge: Boys doing songs conventionally done by girls, and girls doing classic/hard rock.
Of course, we can't escape the real theme of this season of Glee,...

In a plot of particularly poor taste, the members of Nude Erections use a mental image of Coach Beiste to cool down when things get too hot during intimate encounters, who finds out and decides to quit. Will gets her to stay and gives her a first kiss when she tells him she's never been.
David Karofsky, one of those thirty-year-olds who keep harassing Finn (whose name I only know because I read Wikipedia), has been repeatedly bullying Kurt, who, tired of being bullied and not taken seriously by his friends, goes to spy on Dalton Academy. He finds a boys’ school with a zero tolerance policy and a fellow gay student,...

Wow, the New Directions girls aren't having much luck against the guys, are they?
On "Glee's" Tuesday episode (Nov. 9), it's Mashup Rematch: Girls vs. Guys, so sayeth the Schue. Why? Does it really matter?
As the backdrop for the bullying/outcast storyline this week, we gotta say the mashups didn't really work together. Then again, this is "Glee," where incongruities and inconsistencies reign. That, we're willing to overlook and forgive.
The girls' "Living on a Prayer/Start Me Up" mashup, however, was just awful. Not good. Poor Stones and Bon Jovi.
The guys are the hands down winners (again), and we're mainly happy because we've missed En Vogue's attitude. We also like how their original video references the old school girl groups, and that the boys mix "My Lovin' (Never Gonna Get It)" with The Supremes hit "Stop! In the Name of Love."
The originals:
Look, it wasn't the best mashup ever,...

The Nov. 9 episode of ‘Glee’ delivered a powerful message of acceptance, and despite both feeling like outcasts, Kurt and Coach Biste both got their first kisses!
Kurt (Chris Colfer) decides to spy on New Directions’ future sectionals competition, the glee club at an all-boys school, and he see that the singers there are not only regarded as but “rockstars,” but are all supportive of one another. They do an adorable rendition of Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ and Kurt locks eyes with club member Blaine (Darren Criss) who admits he’s gay, as well. The two have an emotional moment, sharing their struggles of being different, and I found it so satisfying to see the usually anxious Kurt feel at peace for a moment.
Meanwhile, our favorite bad-boy is back! Puck (Mark Salling) is out of juvy and serving his community service by spending time with Artie (Kevin McHale.) The...

Fox has been generous enough to give curious fans of "Glee" a sneak peek of the November 8 episode where the girls go against the guys in a mash-up battle. The storyline is rather familiar for they have done so in the first season when the girls combined "Halo" and "Walking on Sunshine", and the guys blended "It's My Life" and "Confessions Part II".
Bon Jovi's song appears again in this upcoming episode but it would be the girls' showtime. In the sneak peek below, Rachel and her friends open with The Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" before slipping the "whoa-aaa" part of Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer". A behind the scene is also released to reveal that the rehearsal for the particular clip did not always go smooth.
In the meantime, the boys would tone down the rock meter with a mash-up of The Supremes' "Stop!

We've been drooling over the addictive a cappella arrangement of "Teenage Dream" that burst onto the Web last week, but now it's time for some mash-ups!
In 'Never Been Kissed,' the ladies of New Directions perform "Livin' on a Prayer/Start Me Up" while the boys channel their inner divas and perform "Stop! In the Name of Love/Free Your Mind."
There's also a full studio version of Darren Criss' "Teenage Dream" and Puck's back with "One Love (People Get Ready)."

One of the 'Glee' covers we were most looking forward to on the upcoming 'Glee: The Music, Volume 4' was a 'Glee'-ified take on Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." Today, previews from next week's episode, "Never Been Kissed," leaked online and lo and behold, guess what tune made the cut?
'Glee' newbie Darren Criss takes the lead on the Katy Perry song. Since he's rumored to be Kurt's new boyfriend, we're guessing the lyrics are dedicated to McKinley High's fiercest fashionista.
The previews also include a Puck and Artie duet of "One Love," and two new mashups -- the boys take on "Stop! In the Name of Love" and "Free Your Mind" (which would be great without the out-of-place electric guitar roaring in the background) and the girls tackle "Livin' On a Prayer" and "Start Me Up" (which,...

With the Fantastic Fest 2010 just two weeks away, the “largest genre festival in the U.S.” has announced a third wave of films.
Included in the line-up are Summit Entertainment’s action-comedy Red, Darren Bousman’s Mother’s Day, and the stylized action flick Bunraku with Josh Hartnett and Woody Harrelson.
