Anthology films are often hit or miss in story style and content. People pick their favorite segments seldom having the whole film in mind. Little or non-existent budget films can use different styles of directing, acting and story. The downfall of most is inconsistency not in the fact of lack of money but in simply the process. Watching a new anthology film by the one person who just does about everything Rusty Apper’s three-story part Artifacts Of Fear (2023) is an example of style over substance.

Filmed in Liverpool and other areas in the UK, which I picked up from some slight scouser accents and my time following a certain football club that wears red, I found Artifacts Of Fear a wonderful seventy-five-minute tight terror experience. Copycat movies have been a thing forever. You can look at the broader scope and consider that most slasher movies became copycat in one way or another. A supernatural killer, excessive gore and nudity, and even the high body counts. That style of horror movies could become a dime a dozen. Twin films are similar, but they are made at roughly the same time and actually trying to release first to beat the other to market so as to not be seen as an attempted clone of the other studios idea. Boiling it down even further, some copycats go beyond just the themes and even try to take direct elements from the previous movie that made money.

Iconic British horror label Amicus Productions is resurrecting with anthology film “In the Grip of Terror.”

Based at Shepperton Studios, Amicus was founded by American producers and screenwriters Milton Subotsky and Max Rosenberg and was active between 1962 and 1977. The outfit was mainly known for their portmanteau or anthology films featuring four or five horror shorts each, including “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors” (1965), “Torture Garden” (1967), “The House That Dripped Blood” (1971), “Tales from the Crypt” (1972), “Asylum” (1972), “Vault of Horror” (1973) and “From Beyond the Grave” (1974). A galaxy of stars including Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Joan Collins, Donald Sutherland, Herbert Lom and Patrick Magee starred in the films.

With a central theme of medical macabre, “In the Grip of Terror” will draw inspiration from “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors,” “Tales from the Crypt” and “Asylum” and will spotlight four tales rooted in the works of revered authors such as H.P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce and E.F Benson.

A few months ago, while covering Hex Studios’ fantasy film throwback The Slave and the Sorcerer, we also mentioned that Hex was also working to “build a new British horror and fantasy studio that’s inspired by the likes of Cannon, Hammer, and Aip”. Now their endeavor has taken a mind-blowing leap forward: Hex Studios has announced they’re working with the family of late producer Milton Subotsky to resurrect Amicus Productions! Hex co-founder Lawrie Brewster is set to be the president of the revived Amicus… and their first project will be exactly the sort of movie Amicus is best remembered for: a horror portmanteau (or anthology) film called In the Grip of Terror!

After a genre-defining golden age from 1978 to 1984, slashers continued to proliferate cinemas throughout the rest of the ’80s. By the time the ’90s rolled around, however, diminishing returns for franchises and newcomers alike made it seem as though the slasher well had run dry. But, like its bottomless repository of knife-wielding villains, the genre has proven that it can never be stopped. During the dry period before Scream revitalized slashers in 1996, savvy filmmakers began leaning into the campy elements as a response to dwindling audiences rooting for the villains rather than fearing them. Dr. Giggles was just what the doctor ordered.

Morgan Neville’s company Tremolo Productions is officially in production of an untitled Andy Kaufman documentary alongside Josh and Benny Safdie’s Elara Pictures. The Emmy-nominated Alex Braverman will direct the feature-length film.

“No matter how many times I watch Andy Kaufman’s work, I feel like I’m seeing a magic trick for the very first time,” Braverman said. “I’m excited for our project to honor that. This is the film I’ve wanted to make my entire life.”

The Safdie brothers will executive produce the project alongside Rick Rubin and Braverman’s father Chuck Braverman, who produced Kaufman’s 1980 special “Andy Kaufman Plays Carnegie Hall.” Wavelength founder and CEO Jennifer Westphal also will executive produce.

Nine films and nine series among streamer’s latest Polish commissions.

Netflix has unveiled a slate of 18 titles that it has greenlit in Poland, spanning nine films and nine series.

News of the commissions comes just weeks after the streamer announced it is opening an office in the country’s capital of Warsaw later this year, which will function as a central hub for Netflix’s Central and Eastern Europe (Cee) productions.

Netflix has previously enjoyed success with Polish erotic thriller 365 Days, which was a top 10 hit for the streamer in over 90 countries.

Netflix has revealed a slate of nine films and nine series that it has commissioned in Poland. Scroll down for the full list.

The series include Detective Forst, from noted Polish writer Remigiusz Mroz, which revolves around a crime-solving journey across the Polish Tatra Mountains. Jakub Żulczyk’s novel Feedback is also being adapted for a series starring Arkadiusz Jakubik, which will be helmed by Leszek Dawid.

On the film side, Anna Szczypczyńska’s romance novel Tonight You Are Sleeping With Me will be adapted for a feature helmed by Robert Wichrowski, while the famed Polish novel Mr. Car & The Knights Templar is also getting the film treatment, with Rafał Skalski directing and Matylda damięcka, Lena Góra, and Aleksandra Domańska starring.

Hello, dear readers! August 10th looks to be something of a quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases, but one of this writer’s favorite films of 2021 is arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this week—My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To—so that makes me incredibly happy. Cult genre fans will be excited about the opportunity to add The Frenchman’s Garden and Jess Franco’s Angel of Death to their personal media collections, and if you missed it in theaters, The House Next Door: Meet the Blacks 2 is headed home on Blu and DVD this Tuesday as well.

I’ve been a fan of horror anthology films for a long time, since the first time I laid eyes upon freaky treats like Creepshow and such, so I’m always intrigued when another pops up, in this case a French horror anthology that started life as a TV series, but has been reshuffled into an anthology feature here.

Dark Stories takes five horror stories and injects them into our veins with horror, suspense and thrills galore, with alien life, zombies, ghosts and ghouls to tickle the taste buds of any horror lover, it manages to change pace and tone regularly to keep things from becoming tedious or samey, which I thought really set it apart.

Roger Corman began his boom year of 1957 with a marvelous bit of ‘way-out’ sci-fi — a ‘Tidal Wave of Terror’ no less. This note just arrived from Donald J.’s Seafood Emporium: “You puny, dunderheaded humans, don’t let the campy title fool you! Soon you will be ‘absorbed’ into our crabby super-mentalities, heh heh heh. We atom-age crustaceans are made of electric anti-matter — it’s incredible! Our telepathy is the best telepathy ever — everybody says so! It is what it is!” The new Blu-ray will charm fans seeking prime ‘fifties monster nirvana.

I don’t know about you, but this writer is more than ready to start looking forward to the Halloween season. And one of the staples of my own ongoing cinematic celebration every year is checking out all the wonderful classic horror movies that Turner Classic Movies airs on their channel. And considering the mess that 2020 has been over the last several months, I thought this year it might be helpful to also include all the genre films that will be playing on TCM throughout the month of September, as it’s never too early to get ready for Halloween.

‘Sky Sharks’ to open horror and fantasy film festival.

Seven world premieres will screen as part of the UK’s Frightfest virtual edition running from August 27-31.

A total of 25 films have been selected for the horror and fantasy film festival. All virtual screenings will be geo-locked to UK audiences, which means the London-based festival will be accessible nationwide for the first time.

Frightfest is also planning a physical event for October which will feature an entirely different line-up.

FrightFest, the UK horror festival that was forced to move online this year because of pandemic disruption, has unveiled a lineup for its 21st edition (August 27-31) including seven world premieres.

World premieres include Logan Thomas’s There’s No Such Thing As Vampires, Patrick Rea’s I Am Lisa, Ruben Pla’s The Horror Crowd, G-Hey Kim’s Don’t Click, Toby Watts’ Playhouse, Airell Anthony Hayles and Sam Casserly’s They’re Outside, and Francesco Giannini’s Hall.

Warner Bros. is bringing everyone’s favorite demonic doll to both Blu-ray and DVD for Annabelle Comes Home, Rlje Films is releasing the psychological thriller Gwen on Blu and DVD too, and for those of you still looking to bask in the brightly lit horrors of Ari Aster’s imagination, Midsommar hits both formats on Tuesday as well.

We also have a ton of older titles being released this week, From Beyond the Grave, My Boyfriend’s Back, Hercules in the Haunted World, and for those looking to upgrade some recent horror hits, both Jordan Peele’s Us and Get Out hit 4k for a double feature set from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

When it comes to anthologies, no one scratches my omnibus itch better than Amicus. From Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965) to (my personal favorite) Tales from the Crypt (1972) through From Beyond the Grave (’74), time and again they served up slivers of ghoulish goodness, succinct and delectable. Asylum (1972) is no different; as a matter of fact, to its advantage it probably has the best wraparound of any horror anthology, which helps set it apart.

Released in the U.K. in July with a rollout stateside by Cinerama Releasing Corporation in November, Asylum did well in its homeland, but fared less with the critics; Roger Ebert’s bizarre (yet humorous) two star review focuses completely on producer (and Amicus co-founder) Max J. Rosenberg’s obsession with coleslaw. Splayed cabbage aside, Asylum holds up as a witty multistory film with a wicked denouement and (as usual) solid work from legendary writer Robert Bloch...

2:00 Am Night...

August’s home entertainment releases are off and running in a big way with this week’s crop of horror and sci-fi titles, as we have nearly two dozen movies coming our way this Tuesday.

Scream Factory is putting in overtime with a handful of stunning steelbooks celebrating three great John Carpenter films—They Live, The Fog and Escape From New York—as well as a Collector’s Edition of James Gunn’s Slither and the indie horror films Don’t Knock Twice and House on Willow Street (which they’ve teamed up with IFC Midnight for).

As far as recent genre movies go, Colossal, Shin Godzilla, and Phoenix Forgotten are all primed for their home bow on August 1st, and both Paramount and Universal are dusting off a bunch of recent titles on both DVD and Blu-ray, including Disturbia, The Machinist, Red Eye, and the unrated version of The Ruins.

Tobin Bell‘s twisted character Jigsaw, aka John Kramer, died in 2006’s Saw III, but his impact is still being felt ten years after the events of 2010’s now-incorrectly-named Saw: The Final Chapter. Well, I hope you guys have been saving your pennies, because there are a lot of great horror and sci-fi titles coming home on March 14th. Scream Factory is giving Firestarter the Collector’s Edition treatment this week, and both Drive-In Massacre and The Skull are being resurrected in HD as well.

If you missed them during their theatrical runs late last year, both The Love Witch and Paul Verhoeven’s award-winning thriller Elle are getting Blu-ray / DVD releases this Tuesday, and Demon Seed is making its way to Blu-ray as well (which I highly recommend watching if you haven't).

Other notable home entertainment titles for March 14th include Passengers, Z Nation Season 3, Johnny Frank Garrett’s Last Word, Stray Bullets, and The Man Who Could Cheat Death.

Capcom invites you into the halls of a home haunted by the creepy, cannibalistic Baker family in gameplay footage from Resident Evil 7 ahead of the game's January release.

From the mid sixties to the mid seventies, omnibus (or anthology, or portmanteau if you’re really fancy) horror films were big business. And Amicus Productions ruled the roost. Between ’65 and ’74 they released seven such films, starting with Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (not to be confused with Dr. Tongue’s Evil House of Pancakes) and culminating with From Beyond the Grave. Today’s film lands in the middle, The House that Dripped Blood (1971) showcasing a company just starting to hit their stride with anthologies.

Popularity of the omnibus format has ebbed and flowed throughout the last 50 years; after Amicus stopped making them, George Romero and Stephen King collaborated on one of the finest, Creepshow (1982), which didn’t so much kick start a revival as have everyone afraid to compete. Throughout the late ‘80s and ‘90s there were pockets of inspiration, Tales from the Hood (1995) and of course HBO...

This is definitely the time of year when film critic types (I’m sure you know who I mean) spend an inordinate amount of time leading up to awards season—and it all leads up to awards season, don’t it?—compiling lists and trying to convince anyone who will listen that it was a shitty year at the movies for anyone who liked something other than what they saw and liked. As a huge fan of 1970s cinema, it's always tempting to overpraise modestly entertaining movies. For comparison's sake to another decade, witness last week's effusive nostalgia for 1985's Back to the Future II, surely one of the most ghastly, sour sequels of the modern era, yet a movie that still holds a special place in many hearts. From a modern perspective, then, 1974's From Beyond the Grave must be acknowledged as a fairly routine anthology, a sufficiently-restrained horror movie that earned a PG-rating when it was finally released in the United States in November 1975, more than 20 months after it debuted in London. My initial memories of Motel Hell formulated around two images: The front cover of Issue #9 (November 1980) of Fangoria magazine, the new horror monthly that specialized in the kind of gruesome images that it’s gentler forefather, Famous Monsters of Filmland, wasn’t comfortable delving in to. August 18th is bringing horror and sci-fi fans a bounty of home entertainment choices this week, especially if you’re into cult classics and indie genre films. Titles arriving on Tuesday include newer movies like Cub, Ejecta and Closer to God as well as the latest from the Soska Sisters, Vendetta. Several older films are getting an HD overhaul on Blu-ray too, including Nomads, The Hunger, Nightmare Castle, The Wife Killer and the supernaturally-infused Burn, Witch, Burn which was also co-penned by Richard Matheson.

And while it may not necessarily be a full-on genre movie, it’s worth noting that Shout! Factory is also releasing the criminally underrated cyber-adventure/thriller Hackers onto Blu-ray this week to celebrate its upcoming 20th anniversary.
