John Wayne filmed his part just a day after winning an Oscar for "True Grit." Between filming, John Ford joked with the crew that Wayne, now an Oscar winner, was accomplished enough to film his scenes in one take -whereas when the director and actor began their legendary collaboration decades prior, it took Wayne fifty takes to get it right.
