World of Wonder has announced that they have licensed a 10-film collection from Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, The Elvira Collection, for their Wow Presents Plus streaming platform. The collection will feature some of Elvira’s best B-Movie horror camp features, and debuted in conjunction with the Grand Finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race this past Friday, where she was the recipient of the Giving Us Life-time Achievement Award.

The Elvira Collection includes episodes from Elvira’s Movie Macabre, an old-fashioned style horror movie marathon, hosted and commentated on by the Mistress of the Dark herself, also known as Cassandra Peterson. The collection will feature 10 classic films, including “Night of the Living Dead”, “The Terror”, “Scared To Death”, “A Bucket of Blood”, “The Manster”, “The House That Screamed”, “The Devil’s Wedding Night”, “Maneater of Hydra”, “The Killer Shrews”, “Gamera”, and “Super Monster”. US filmmaker Alex Gibney says Musk, his documentary about businessman and investor Elon Musk, is “likely to be seen next year”.

The film is in production through Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions, with Closer Media, AC Independent and Double Agent. Gibney told Screen he “keeps reaching out” to the tech billionaire to be involved in the film, but without success so far.

A couple months ago – soon after the successful theatrical release of director Elizabeth Banks’ Cocaine Bear (read our review Here) – we saw the trailer for Cocaine Shark, the latest movie from prolific low budget filmmaker Mark Polonia. We already knew at that time that the movie had secured a distribution deal with Wild Eye Releasing, and now we know when Wild Eye is going to be sending Cocaine Shark out into the world. The film is set to receive a DVD and VOD release on July 11th!

July 11th also happens to be the start of the Shark Week marathon on the Discovery Channel, so this is some perfect timing.

Scripted by Bando Glutz, Polonia’s Cocaine Shark has the following synopsis: A mafia drug lord has unleashed a new, highly addictive stimulant on the streets called HT25, derived from sharks held captive in a secret lab, and which causes monstrous side effects.

Who knew movie-goers had such a hunger for movies about animals on cocaine-fuelled rampages? In less than two weeks of release, director Elizabeth Banks’ Cocaine Bear (read our review Here) has racked up over $50 million at the box office. In the build-up to the release of that film, a news report about New Zealand police recovering more than three tons of cocaine that was found floating in the Pacific Ocean got people talking about the possibility of a Cocaine Shark movie… and the idea was even passed along to Banks, who said, “Jaws with cocaine, I don’t see how that loses.” But as it turns out, Banks has been beaten to the Cocaine Shark idea by prolific low budget filmmaker Mark Polonia, whose own Cocaine Shark movie is so far along that it has already secured a distribution deal with Wild Eye Releasing, and a trailer is already online!

The September release slate from Severin Films has been announced and detailed today, this latest batch of new releases headlined by 1980 classic The Changeling on 4K Ultra HD.

Severin Films will be haunting disc players across the continent with a new 4K edition of Peter Medak’s beloved ghost story The Changeling, along with landmark Spanish television series Tales to Keep You Awake, My Grandpa Is a Vampire via the Severin Kids imprint, and the entire Plaga Zombie Trilogy through sublabel Intervision Picture Corp.

As if that isn’t enough, Severin will also be putting out a Blu-ray double feature of Al Adamson’s Dracula vs. Frankenstein and Brain of Blood as a standalone release.

Happy Tuesday, dear readers! We have an eclectic home media release day today that features some truly great genre films from both the past and the present. One of my favorite movies of 2022 is Robert Eggers’ The Northman, and Universal is releasing the film on a variety of formats today. Ahead of the new season’s debut later this month, CBS Studios is bringing Evil: Season Two to DVD, and Lee Haven Jones’ The Feast is headed to both Blu-ray and DVD today, too. Synapse is showing some love to The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue with their brand new Special Edition Blu, and if you’re a Shaw Brothers fan, you’ll definitely want to pick up the Blu for Human Lanterns.

Spanish cinema has lost an understated giant with Friday’s passing of genre film and TV pioneer Narciso “Chicho” Ibañez Serrador, dead at the age of 83.

Although he only filmed two features, both stand out as milestones in the country’s early genre cannon, 1970’s “La Residencia” (“The House That Screamed”) and 1976’s “¿Quién puede matar a un niño?” (“Who Can Kill a Child?”).

The films anticipated Spain’s surge in upscale genre auteur, and helped evolve the medium from quickly produced hack-and-slash fare intended to make a quick buck at the box office, to films with aesthetics, psychology and humanistic narratives that stood and stand out in international cinema.

In Spain he is equally well-regarded for his work in TV with programs such as “Un, dos, tres… responda otra vez,” in its time the biggest game show in Spain, and the legendary horror series “Historias para no dormir”.

Madrid — Javier Fesser’s “Champions” won best picture at the 33rd Spanish Academy Goya Awards, having seemed to have been locked out of major awards.

“Champions” entered the ceremony as most probably the favorite in one of the most open fields in recent years, given the diversity of best picture contenders in artistic and industry terms.

But, produced by Morena Films, Películas Oendelton and Movistar +, “Champions” had already been selected by the Academy as Spain’s Oscar entry and had proven a blockbuster hit on home turf for Upi Spain, earning €18.5 million ($21.1 million). Selling near worldwide, the comedy turns on an off-the-rails Spanish coach sentenced to train a basketball team of special-needs players.

Even though there are only a few days of 2016 left, that doesn’t mean we don’t have several more horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases to look forward to before the new year arrives. This Tuesday, Ti West’s In A Valley of Violence arrives on both Blu-ray and DVD, and Scream Factory is giving the cult classic The House That Screamed an HD overhaul.

Festival favorite Pet comes home on December 27th courtesy of Paramount, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has a new batch of Underworld Blu-rays coming our way, including the original film in 4K Ultra HD. Other notable releases this week include When the Bough Breaks, Dog Eat Dog, and Kill Command.

There’s the usual stockpile when we mention horror anthology TV series. Twilight Zone sits firmly on top for most, and then follows Outer Limits, Thriller, Tales from the Crypt, Masters of Horror, Night Gallery, and on and on. (The rankings are up to you.) And sometimes, way down in the pile of yellowed TV Guides lays one that time forgot (and Nielsen killed). Witness NBC’s Ghost Story/Circle of Fear (1972), a one season and done series that provided solid stories well told over 23 episodes.

If the title seems confusing, it’s because it was known as Ghost Story for the first 13 episodes (plus pilot), and then Circle of Fear for the last 9. Low ratings prompted the name change, which proceeded when the show returned from the Christmas break. Rotund host Sebastian Cabot also didn’t survive the retooling.

At this time of year we want not just any horror films, but horror films with a particular atmosphere. We need creaking Gothic fantasy, not just enthusiastic splatter. There is some of both in La Residencia, which is essentially a slasher movie but which behaves as if it were a ghost story: a few moments of bubbling grue punctuate a great deal of creeping around in elegant sets, the camera spying on the action from suspicious angles, arcing athletically through the vaulted chambers, occasionally fragmenting into a orgiastic flurry of quick cuts...Narciso Ibáñez Serrador is the man who did for children what Hitchcock did for birds, in Who Can Kill a Child? One of our favorite horror events of the year is Drive-In Super Monster-Rama, which takes place every September and shows eight classic horror movies over two nights on a huge drive-in screen. Last year, they dedicated the entire event to movies featuring Peter Cushing and this year they have another memorable lineup that classic horror fans should dig watching outdoors, including one night dedicated to the films of Italian horror director Mario Bava.

The tribute to Italian director Mario Bava takes place Friday night with screenings of four of his films: Planet of the Vampires, Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs, Kill Baby Kill, and The House of Exorcism.

Suspenseful, stylish horror‑murder film set in a girls’ school. Exploitable and a good bet for ballyhoo spots, drive‑ins. Rating: Gp.

While it blazes no new trails in the horror field (ghoulish doings at girls’ school is hardly a new theme, especially for Aip), The House that Screamed is an exploitable, classily‑assembled period chiller with plenty of seedy, menacing atmosphere. Mixing various elements of suspense, muted sex and violence, the Aip import was very big on its home ground (Spain), where it was shown in 70 millimeter as La Residencia (“The Finishing School”), and figures to be an equally solid attraction for Us horror markets. “I believe in healthy minds and healthy bodies,” preaches Lilli Palmer, widowed...

News and portrait photographer with an eye for the unexpected and the authentic

Michael Ward, who has died after a long illness, aged 82, was a news photographer for almost 40 years and once calculated that his archive of prints and negatives covered 5,500 assignments, mainly though not exclusively for the Sunday Times. And yet he came late to his career and never felt confident that he completely understood it. Towards the end of his life, after half a century with a camera, he wrote that he knew "as much or as little about the processes of photography as a decent amateur". Technically, he knew he was far from accomplished. Aesthetically, he was never sure what separated a good picture from an indifferent one.

He had several exhibitions – the venues included the National theatre and the National Portrait Gallery – but he always remained suspicious about photography's claim as art. Nevertheless, many of his pictures are sympathetic and memorable.

Back in August, we were so excited for the release of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World that we were utterly baffled by the lukewarm response that greeted the film at the box office. Now, four months later, our collective love hasn't dimmed - if our end of year poll is anything to go by, where it was placed second overall - and we're hoping it finds a new lease of life on DVD and Blu-ray.
