The big surprise on the runway of Yohji Yamamoto’s Fall Winter 2024 men’s collection in Paris was the appearance of Wim Wenders. The 78-year-old German filmmaker, currently enjoying box office success in Europe with Perfect Days, walked the runway wearing classic pieces in the fashion house’s style of layering and varying lengths.
Yamamoto’s connection to Wenders dates back to 1989, when the director of Wings of Desire made a documentary about the founder of the Japanese brand called Notebook on Cities and Clothes.
“We became close like brothers a long time ago. We share the same memory from when we were very young — the Tokyo and Berlin bombings,” the fashion designer stressed backstage at the event inside Yamamoto’s European headquarters on Rue Saint-Martin, in the heart of Les Halles.

I’m not gonna lie, there’s been a lot of debate around here about what the best Christmas specials are and why. In fact, sometimes it’s gotten downright nasty around the office – and by “office,” of course I mean each of our homes, because that’s just how we roll. You can understand how heated discussion like this can get, because even a Jew like me has his favorites. See, even though I was Jewish, my family had Christmas trees and discussion about Santa Claus coming down the chimney and chestnuts roasting and the singing of carols off-key, because we basically secretly (or not so secretly) wanted to be Christian so we wouldn’t have to pretend to be just as happy celebrating Hanukkah and getting socks and coloring books as gifts while all the goyum seemed to be having the greatest time of their lives and so...

Deliriously wry and so perfectly balanced it should become a case study in script classes, “Riders of Justice” may be the film that finally gives Anders Thomas Jensen international recognition beyond his usual spotlight as a sought-after screenwriter. Comparisons with the Coen brothers will be inevitable given oddball characters whose fixations and genuine heart contrast with moments of extreme violence, yet the roots of this black revenge comedy go back even further, bringing an asocial spin to classic screwballers where a group of quirky misfits are balanced out by a lone woman who’s the most put-together and in touch of the bunch.
Jensen works with his customary stable of actors, many of whom have appeared in his previous four features including Mads Mikkelsen, the most globally recognized of the group and currently enjoying quite a year between this and “Another Round.” Box office in Denmark was predictably high for...

Following the double-platinum success of her Once Upon a Christmas LP with Kenny Rogers in 1984, it was a natural that Dolly Parton would eventually release another holiday-themed album. After her short-lived variety series in the late Eighties, the East Tennessee native finally went Home for Christmas with an LP and an ABC TV special in 1990. Unlike the previous album, which included several new original tunes, Home for Christmas was built around traditional Yuletide fare, including such songs as “The Little Drummer Boy,” “We Three Kings” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem.

I loved cartoons on Saturday mornings growing up, but I looked forward to watching them in primetime during the holidays. Some of my favorites were Frosty, Rudolph, The Little Drummer Boy, and A Charlie Brown Christmas especially the dance and Linus' speech. Even though they were the same stories told over and over again, I was riveted every year. I guess because in my mind both the fictional stories and the religious stories were all real to me. I loved the music and would sing along with so much joy.

I’m guessing that you, just like most of us, have always had seasonal favorites when it comes to movies that attempt to address and evoke the spirit of Christmas. Like most from my generation, when I was a kid I learned the pleasures of perennial anticipation of Christmastime as interpreted by TV through a series of holiday specials, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and even musical variety hours where the likes of Bing Crosby and Andy Williams and Dean Martin et al would sit around sets elaborately designed to represent the ideal Christmas-decorated living room, drinking “wassail” (I’m sure that’s what was in those cups) and crooning classics of the season alongside a dazzling array of guests. (We knew we were moving into a new world of holiday cheer when David Bowie joined Bing Crosby for...

For better or for worse, the holiday season is upon us. To many that simply means bracing up against the onslaught of hectic holiday shopping and overly tense family gatherings. After all, it doesn't take much to put one on edge at the thought of interminable line-ups in overfull malls, endless searches for that perfect gift or bauble before Christmas or that perfect deal on Boxing Day after, or that moment when we all inevitably find ourselves singing along to The Little Drummer Boy for the millionth time in an hour. But don't lose your spirit! There are many less stressful ways to experience the best of the season and at the top of that list is sitting down to watch favourite classic holiday movies with family and friends.
With that in mind, we've compiled a list of films we think represent the very best of the traditional holiday movie fare.

Rankin-Bass teamed up with Boris Karloff, Mad Magazine, Forry Ackerman, and Frank Frazetta for a Halloween special. What the hell?
Three years after producing 1964’s Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer but before going on to make other warm-hearted and sincere animated holiday standards like Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town, The Little Drummer Boy, Frosty the Snowman and the questionable Here Comes Peter Cottontail, Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass took a hard left turn into the dark, delightfully strange, and intensely geeky with Mad Monster Party.
Predating Tim Burton and Henry Selick’s Nightmare Before Christmas by over a quarter-century, the sinister duo’s stop-motion musical comedy celebration of classic Universal horror, which was released as a theatrical feature before becoming a semi-regular October TV standby, never quite cornered the Halloween specials market as planned. Somehow it was never able to lure audiences away from that damned Great Pumpkin.

Don’t get me wrong: I adore Charlie Brown, Rudolph and the Grinch as much as anyone. But ask me to name my all-time favorite holiday special, and I gotta go with Pee-wee Herman.
Broadcast in 1988--in prime time!--Pee-wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special had everything we can possibly want in seasonal entertainment: music, merriment, snow … even Oprah.
“There’s never been a Christmas special like this, I guarantee you,” Pee-wee told Et’s Jeanne Wolf in 1988. (As was his custom, Paul Reubens did the interview entirely in character as his giggling, bow-tied alter ego.) And he was absolutely right: Until Pee-wee’s Playhouse came along in 1986, no one had ever blended camp, comedy and an art-school sensibility on Saturday morning television before. The result attracted kids and many curious adults.

This is the best "Lip Flip" yet! Ricky Gervais stopped by "The Tonight Show" on Tuesday night, where he swapped mouths with Jimmy Fallon and had the late night host cracking up with his raunchy antics. The best part? The man whose animated holiday TV specials have touched generations of fans died Thursday at his home in Bermuda. Arthur Rankin Jr was 89. His death was reported by local newspaper The Royal Gazette. With his partner Jules Bass, Rankin mined popular Christmas songs to create enduring stop-motion TV classics including Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) — which beat The Voice and Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the 18-49 demo when CBS aired it Thanksgiving Eve last year – The Little Drummer Boy (1968), Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town (1970) and The Year Without A Santa Claus (1974). The Jimmy Durante-narrated Frosty The Snowman (1969) was done in tradition cel animation and was the first of their Christmas specials done as a half-hour rather than an hour. Rankin and Bass founded their company in 1960 as Videocraft International, and the name was changed to Rankin/Bass Productions eight years later. They also produced plenty of non-holiday fare as well,...

Now here's a holiday album every child of the 80s would buy: On Monday's episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," Megadeth promoted a fake compilation called "Thrashing Through the Snow: A Very Megadeth Christmas" -- which includes a duet with indie darling Jenny Lewis. Watch the clip below. Dressed in holiday sweaters, frontman Dave Mustaine and his bandmates growl out metal renditions of "Frosty the Snowman," "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Do You Hear What I Hear?" as little children cower in the corner and cover their ears. The band also manages to scare off Lewis, who realizes a few lines...

Michael Bublé is back with his third annual Christmas special (airing Wednesday at 10 p.m. Et on NBC), and this year’s guests are Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey, whose bedazzled mic is truly something to behold. “I felt so unimportant,” Bublé jokes. “No, it was funny, we actually had a laugh about it, her and I. I like that the girls have bedazzled mics. I saw Katy Perry’s mic the other night behind the scenes at a show we were both doing together, it was glorious. They actually look like they have special powers. I expect to see it in,...

Another YouTube star is born, thanks to Justin Bieber.
The Canadian pop icon tweeted about 10-year-old Jayden Anderson's recent performance of Bieber's version of 'The Little Drummer Boy' at St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School’s Christmas concert in Markham, Ont., putting a bright spotlight on the young rapper.
"this kid Jayden killed it! nice. #DrummerBoy http://youtu.be/vxDKKxeLxck" he tweeted Thursday.
Jayden's teacher Angie Careri, who chose the song, said the 5th-grader is a huge Bieber fan and practised the tune for weeks.
“He has a lot of swag for a little 10-year-old,” she told the Toronto Star.
As if Jayden did not have enough talent, he also knows a thing or two about baseball. He earned Internet fame over a stellar catch during a baseball game, The Huffington Post reported last year.
We expect to hear big things about Jayden. After all, Bieber was discovered on YouTube himself,...

Mad Monster Party is a relatively obscure stop-motion animated musical treat from 1967 that many non-genre fans are unaware of. Aimed at children, it is the creation of Rankin and Bass, the production team responsible for so many holiday television specials including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, The Little Drummer Boy, and The Year Without a Santa Claus. Unlike these specials, however, Mad Monster Party made the rounds to movie theaters as a feature-length film for Saturday and Sunday matinees. It’s the obvious inspiration for Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), boasting an infectious musical score that sticks in your head long after the movie is over.

The real climax of this season happened last week in “Birth,” when Vivien joined the murder house’s collection of ghosts after the apocalyptic delivery of her twins. We were led to believe that one was stillborn, but the other, healthier one went straight into the care of crazy Constance as Ben was left to sort out his life all alone, as Vivien and Violet settle into eternity among the house’s ephemeral residents.

Most Christmas songs exist as part of our collective unconsciousness, so we don't exactly put a magnifying glass to the lyrics to examine them for logical integrity. (Although, is logical integrity truly not what the Christmas season is all about?) But last night on "Conan," Patton Oswalt tore apart "The Little Drummer Boy," and came to the conclusion that the song makes no damn sense. At all.
"I have a two and a half year old daughter, and I never go, 'She will not settle down and go to sleep. Does anyone have a percussion instrument? Or half a can of coffee beans I can shake in her face?'" Patton joked, referring to the Drummer Boy in the song playing his drum to lull the baby Jesus to sleep. "Where were you when my baby had the croup, Neil Peart?!"
This isn't the first time Patton mercilessly took apart a Christmas standard.

Having grown up on the Rankin Bass Christmas specials since I was a child, the Yuletide season just isn't the same without a yearly viewing of some of their most enchanting shows. Since the 1960s and 1970s, specials such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, The Little Drummer Boy and The Year Without a Santa Claus were shown on the major television networks. In the late 1980s it became increasingly difficult to see most of these specials unless you had cable television or video cassette recorders as the major networks stopped airing them. With the availability of home video, the shows were inevitably made available to the masses and made great Christmas presents.
The fine folks at Classic Media have released some of these beloved Christmas classics on Blu-ray. In a two-disc set entitled The Original Christmas Classics,...

Lights, camera, Justin Bieber. Christmas has come to Rockefeller Center. The traditional tree-lighting ceremony, the 79th annual, in the midtown Manhattan destination was a cautiously paced, all-star event Wednesday night, with carols delivered by the likes of Bieber, who essentially headlined the event, Michael Bublé (singing "I'll Be Home for Christmas"), Cee Lo Green, Neil Diamond, Carole King, Katharine McPhee and Tony Bennett (the traditional "White Christmas"). Mariah Carey was also seen in a debut video duet with Bieber, for her "All I Want for Christmas." The number resembled a big-budget department-store commercial, although the video's quick cuts made it...
