The Dakotas first episode was a back door pilot on the show Cheyenne.
The episode "Sanctuary at Crystal Springs" was seen as the cause of the show's abrupt cancellation. The episode contained a scene where a church was shot up. A couple of villains were killed at the church and a preacher was held hostage. It proved to be too much for the audience and they tuned out. The show was canceled before its final episodes were aired.
This was the first TV Western set in the Dakota Territory.
Larry Ward, Jack Elam, and Michael Greene never took their shirts off in this series. Chad Everett took his shirt off in episode three, "Mutiny at Fort Mercy"; episode eight, "Fargo"; and episode sixteen, "The Chooser of the Slain".
