No, North to Alaska is based on a play called Birthday Gift by Hungarian playwright Ladislas Fodor. The play was adapted for the screen by American screenwriters John Lee Mahin, Martin Rackin, and Claude Binyon.
When prospector George Pratt (Stewart Granger) strikes gold in Alaska, he sends his friend Sam McCord (John Wayne) to Seattle to fetch his fiancée, Jenny Lamont (Lilyan Chauvin). It turns out that Jenny is already married, so Sam brings back Michelle "Angel" Bonet (Capucine), a French prostitute, as a substitute. Unfortunately, Angel falls in love with Sam on the trip back, so George schemes to get Angel and Sam together. Meanwhile, con man and saloon owner Frankie Cannon (Ernie Kovacs) is also scheming—to get Angel as well as George and Sam's gold mine.
Clancy looks to be an Old English Sheepdog mix.
Angel decides to return to Seattle and takes a room at Frankie's saloon while waiting for The Queen of Seattle to board. Having learned that their mine has been impounded by the U.S. Commissioner because Peter Boggs (Mickey Shaughnessy) has cross-filed a claim against them, Sam, George, and Billy (Fabian) go looking for Boggs. They find him holed up with a case of whiskey at the saloon, where they also run into Angel. It turns out that Frankie is the one who filed the claim in Boggs' name. A rip-roaring fight breaks out between Sam, George, Billy, Boggs, Frankie, and Duggan (Stephen Courtleigh), ending when Sam and George haul Boggs and Frankie over to the Commissioner to disavow their claim. Just then, a call rings out for passengers to board The Queen of Seattle. When Angel starts heading toward the boat, Sam tries to convince her to stay. Angel asks Sam why she should stay, and Sam finally blurts it out, "Because I love you. That's why!" In the final scene, Angel hugs Sam, George gives Sam and Angel a "diamond" ring he got from Frankie, and everyone heads over to the saloon.
