This show grew out of a series of columns that Erle Stanley Gardner wrote for Argosy Magazine that, like the TV series, explored the possibility of innocence of convicted felons.
The most famous case Erle Stanley Gardner investigated for his court of last resort was the Sam Sheppard murder case, the basis for the TV series The Fugitive. He involved attorney F. Lee Bailey and wrote about it, and intended to showcase it on this television show, but could not because Ohio authorities did not cooperate. Sheppard was, of course, eventually found not guilty at a retrial after the US Supreme Court overturned the original conviction.
