Bergman's first collaboration with cinematographer Sven Nykvist.
Originally marketed in the States as a sex film under the title "The Naked Night".
Ingmar Bergman about the script; "I wrote it in a small hotel at Mosebacke Square, Stockholm, in the house as Södra Teatern. My room was crowded but with a magnificent view of the city and Saltsjön. There was a winding staircase from the hotel down to the theatre. In the evenings music was heard from the vaudeville stage. At night the actors and their odd guests was wining and dining in the hotel diner. In this environment "Gycklarnas Afton" was created in less than three weeks.".
After the economic debacle of "Gycklarnas Afton", produced by Sandrews, Bergman returned to SF, Svensk Filmindustri.
This film is part of the Criterion Collection, spine #412.
