The social norms and attitudes expressed during the series often did not match those of its 1850s to early-1870s settings. Most of the values expressed were those of its 1950s and 1960s filming period.
The majority of the weapons shown in the series are not era-appropriate. Most were models which came into existence from the late 1870s and afterward, well after the major wagon trains heading west ended.
The forms of dress worn by the characters rarely corresponded with those worn in the 19th century. This included pants with belt loops, men's shirts with full buttons down the front, and women seldom wearing bonnets or hats when outside.
