The character Cabiria later returns in Nights of Cabiria (1957). Giulietta Masina's short role in this film inspired Fellini to write a screenplay with Giulietta as the main character.
Federico Fellini had co-directed one previous feature but was not especially keen on directing The White Sheik (1952) by himself. He only stepped in when story writer Michelangelo Antonioni, more experienced at directing, refused to take the job.
