Lionel Barrymore had previously played US President Andrew Jackson in The Gorgeous Hussy (1936). Beulah Bondi, who plays Minniver Bryan, played Jackson's wife, Rachel Jackson, in the earlier film.
This was a box-office success, earning MGM a profit of $990,000 ($11.25 million in 2023 terms), according to studio records.
