Several characters wield curved blades that they refer to as katars. Katars, however, and much shorter in length than the blades they carry and katars are straight, triangular blades. The short swords they carry are most likely patterned after scimitars or kilijs, both of which are curved blades used prominently in the East.
Wires are visible on the black bird as it circles the ship's mast.
