In an interview with Robert Osborne for Turner Classic Movies, Mickey Rooney related that he didn't get along with the director Roy Rowland. One time on the set, Rowland yelled "Cut!" and proceeded to yell at Rooney in front of the cast and crew, concluding "I'm leaving!" Rooney was so incensed that he took hold of Rowland and said "No! I'm leaving" and then went home.
Elizabeth Taylor was originally cast in this film but was replaced by Ann Blyth after a re-write changed the age of Sheila Carrison.
A publicity still shows Walter Pidgeon with Mickey Rooney in a scene from this film. Mr. Pidgeon was not in the film, however. With his image at the time, he probably would have been cast as Jim Caighn.
TV western fans should instantly recognize two of Walsh's thugs. His henchman who is always by his side is Milburn Stone, who was a TV icon as Doc Adams on Gunsmoke (1955), and his bodyguard who threatens Tommy's father is Ray Teal, Sheriff Roy Coffee on Bonanza (1959).
