Based on the play of the same title that opened on Broadway in New York City at the Criterion Theatre, 1514-16 Broadway on 31 October 1918 and ran for 316 performances. Harry Davenport, "The Ancient" in this picture, played Dr. Gaunt in this stage production.
Frank Morgan was originally set for a starring role in the film. Likewise, Theron Warth was to edit, but was eventually replaced by Gene Ruggiero.
The cast includes acting Oscar winners Lionel Barrymore, Jane Darwell and Thomas Mitchell. Margaret O'Brien won an Oscar in the Juvenile category, which is non-competitive, for outstanding child actress of 1944.
