Into the Woods: Lesage Explores Wounded Masculinities
In Vincent Sherman’s 1943 Bette Davis-led melodrama Old Acquaintance, the complex relationship between a pair of female frenemies becomes increasingly complicated throughout their lifetime. Resignedly, they rely on a metaphorical phrase to explain their relationship – “There’s always what’s left of the icing.” The same wistful sentiment cannot be said for the troubled relationship between two men in Philippe Lesage’s latest agonizing, unpredictable melodrama Who by Fire, which focuses on a pair of artists whose notable professional relationship dissolved years ago, now reuniting at a log cabin along with a handful of related guests.…...

With all the other good fortune that’s fallen upon Clint Eastwood—great looks and talent, for starters—the one that calls out to be noted today is his extraordinary longevity. Sunday, May 31st marks the man’s 90th birthday, a landmark exceptional in itself—most of us would be thrilled to make it anywhere near that threshold of life, not to mention being in such good shape to enjoy it. Congratulations, and happy birthday, Clint!
Beyond simply making it to this enviable life landmark, remaining lucid and able to stand on one’s two feet, there’s the uncommon blessing of being able to do what one loves doing and still be good at it. Not many can claim this pleasure or distinction, so it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate and assess what Clint (as essentially everyone calls him whether they know him or not) has pulled off at this cherishable moment.

Be it onscreen or on the printed page, superhero team-ups are arguably a bigger deal now than ever before. Since Rebirth kicked off a year-and-a-half ago, DC has done a fine job of producing addictive ensemble titles. Of course, Justice League is probably the first book that’ll spring to mind, but it’s important that we not overlook a gem such as Trinity.
Uniting three of the most iconic heroes in all of pop culture – Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman – Trinity treats readers by offering a more intimate look at the characters in smaller settings than expected, no less. Naturally, it’s easier to do that in a book such as this as opposed to one that forces you to juggle seven or eight main protagonists, but that doesn’t mean the adventures aren’t blown to epic proportions every now and then.
So, even though the next issue...

BoJack Horseman is the best of all of Netflix's original series, and one of the best shows on television. In its third season, which was released on Friday, the series about an incredibly rich, famous, and depressed acting horse somehow became even darker and more experimental, and the season's fourth installment — which I discussed at length with BoJack creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg — may turn out to be the best episode of TV anyone will make this year(*). (*) Hey, other streaming shows: BoJack should be an object lesson in how to tell a deeply serialized story across an entire season while still making individual episodes stand out as more than just pieces of the whole. Now that the season's out there, and many of you have had a chance to watch the whole thing, I'm going to do miniature reviews of each episode — with full spoilers for the whole season — coming up...

Hedy Lamarr: 'Invention' and inventor on Turner Classic Movies (photo: Hedy Lamarr publicity shot ca. early '40s) Two Hedy Lamarr movies released during her heyday in the early '40s — Victor Fleming's Tortilla Flat (1942), co-starring Spencer Tracy and John Garfield, and King Vidor's H.M. Pulham, Esq. (1941), co-starring Robert Young and Ruth Hussey — will be broadcast on Turner Classic Movies on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Pt, respectively. Best known as a glamorous Hollywood star (Ziegfeld Girl, White Cargo, Samson and Delilah), the Viennese-born Lamarr (née Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler), who would have turned 100 on November 9, was also an inventor: she co-developed and patented with composer George Antheil the concept of frequency hopping, currently known as spread-spectrum communications (or "spread-spectrum broadcasting"), which ultimately led to the evolution of wireless technology. (More on the George Antheil and Hedy Lamarr invention further below.) Somewhat ironically,...

1. The term "gaslight." The Ingrid Bergman thriller "Gaslight" -- released 70 years ago this week, on May 4, 1944, wasn't the original use of the title. There was Patrick Hamilton's 1938 play "Gas Light," retitled "Angel Street" when it came to Broadway a couple years later. And there was a British film version in 1939, starring Anton Walbrook (later the cruel impresario in "The Red Shoes") and Diana Wynyard.
Still, the glossy 1944 MGM version remains the best-known telling of the tale, with the title an apparent reference to the flickering Victorian lamps that are part of Gregory's (Charles Boyer) scheme to make wife Paula (Bergman) think she's seeing things that aren't there, thus deliberately undermining her sanity in order to have her institutionalized so that he'll be free to ransack the ancestral home to find the missing family jewels.

Jacqueline Bisset vs. the Golden Globes 2014 get-lost orchestra NBC or whoever organized the Golden Globes 2014 ceremony sat Jacqueline Bisset way in the back of the awards ceremony ballroom. Never mind the fact that Bisset’s film career began nearly half a century ago and that she was a Golden Globe nominee in the Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television category for the mini-series Dancing on the Edge. As a result, it took Bisset, who seemed about as surprised as everybody else when her named was called up, more than a minute to reach the stage. (Photo: Jacqueline Bisset accepts her Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television © HFPA.) Visibly moved, Bisset had to wait a few more seconds before she was able to talk. By the time she began with her somewhat rambling acceptance speech,...

90210 may not have knocked it out of the park this week but “Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot?” looks to be a great lead into next week’s all new episode. Such a fitting title we have this week. Annie gets a good look in the mirror and tries to save Liam from what was once herself while others fight to protect what they love as well. The pacing was slower than it needed to be but aside from that, this was a fairly satisfying episode.
The first question of the night came as Annie made her way home from her Paris, France holiday travels. Where did this money come from exactly? Did Grandma pick up the tab because we know that Annie’s parents aren’t as well off as they once were and it is unclear just how much Annie was able to save from her prostitute days. It...

Happy New Year! But was it really? It seemed that 2012 just brought new 90210 drama in "Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot?."
When last we met, Liam (aka AbMan) had found out that Annie was a whore and had then proceeded to get run over and left in the middle of the street... only to be rescued by the very same chick who ran him over. Dixon had used Adrianna's song about Maizy, her given-up-for-adoption daughter, to lay down some mean beats on his latest "hit." Navid had gotten beat senseless by Uncle Amal's thug buddies and Naomi had caught cowpoke Austin poking her arch-nemesis, Holly.
As usual, Naomi had the best lines of the night. Not to mention the best hairstyles and outfits. Whether it was a pulled-back bun or a Veronica Lake old-school flip, the girl rocked every single look she was put in. Including the topless one behind the...

The CW has pushed the return of 90210 back an extra week, meaning a new episode won't air until January 17. That's the bad news.
But the good news is that you can at least browse through a few photos from the winter premiere - "Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot?" - ahead of time, as the network teases that Naomi "embarrasses herself in front of Rachel in an attempt to get over Austin." How so?
One of these images makes it rather clear:
As you can see, Liam also appears to be alive and mostly well, depicted above talking to guest star Arielle Kebbel (as Vanessa).
Check out the official 90210 promo now this show's return now and look forward to storylines on January 17 that include Dixon and Adrianna being asked to perform at a club together, and Silver taking her relationship with Greg to the next level.

Coffee. Hot chocolate. Cozy fireplaces. Hot buttered rum. Snuggies. All of these are excellent ways to warm oneself on a cold and snowy New York day. Another very effective manner to beat the winter chills is to receive a phone call from Harriet Harris, the Tony Award winning actress who starred in such Broadway shows as Old Acquaintance, The Man Who Came To Dinner, Cry-baby and Thouroughly Modern Mille, for which she received her coveted Tony. Currently co-starring with Victor Garber and Brooks Ashmanskas in the Roundabout Theatre's production of Noel Coward's comedy Present Laughter, Miss Harris took time out between matinee and evening performances for a conversation in the midst of a severe snowstorm. She was an excellent conversationalist and displayed great perception about theatre, human behavior and the production she is currently appearing in. Additionally, there's a warmth to her voice that made it easy to forget...
