Veteran "B" director William Beaudine actually directed this film, but didn't want to take credit for it. Strapped for cash at the time, he took the job for the paycheck but was afraid that being associated with a low-budget, all-black-cast film would hurt his career. So producer Jed Buell put his own name on the credits as director, even though he didn't actually direct any of the picture.
At the beginning of the film, Schenectady Jones is shown reading a newspaper with the name "The Southwest Wave". This was an actual weekly newspaper published in Los Angeles and written for the black community.
The mortgage on the hotel of $2,500 equates to about $50,000 in 2022.
