In summer 2010, something described in a Variety article as a 'melding of a Broadway show and a Gray Line bus tour' was announced and I was very confused. And maybe appalled. In late fall of that year, when the giant buses labelled The Ride hit the streets, none of these feelings subsided. Now, seven years later, The Ride is a hard-to-describe but well-known fixture on New York City streets, even being parodied on The Simpsons and, more recently, Difficult People. Yet, despite the long lines to board, it still has yet to make money.

Being 13 is difficult. It can be a scary, emotional, lonely time in a young person’s life. Depending on when you grew up, being 13 meant different things: Most millennials have the cringeworthy evidence of braces and Aeropostale fits in an overflowing Facebook album from 2009. Others didn’t have social media’s living reminders, like “Big Mouth” star Andrew Rannells.
“I would’ve made so many stupid videos and taken so many stupid pictures,” he said to IndieWire.
But no matter how private or public your adolescence was, the creators of “Big Mouth” want viewers to know that we’ve all been there — yes, every one of us. To the girls who first got their period on a class trip, you are not alone. To the kids going through trials with acne, bacne, and buttne, you are not alone. Everyone gets curb-stomped by puberty, and “Big Mouth” wants to help.

Tituss Burgess – they don’t love you like we love you.
The actor opened up about his character’s “ode to Beyoncé” in season 3 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to PeopleTV on the red carpet at the 2017 Emmy Awards on Sunday.
Of one moment – where he wore a “Hold Up” dress replica, strutting the New York City streets while haplessly swinging a baseball bat – Burgess says, “That felt good, a little too good.”
“Kinda want my own, like, smashing window batting range in my backyard,” adds Burgess. “It felt great.”

Atlanta actors, listen up! Stay in the loop about what’s currently filming in your fair city (and projects, big and small, seeking talent) with our weekly roundup. The Peach City streets are alive and chattering about NBA star Kyrie Irving. The Boston Celtics’ new addition was recently spotted filming “Uncle Drew,” a feature-length film based on the character that first appeared in a series of Pepsi Max ads, around the city. The film is apparently a “love letter to basketball” and will feature legends like Shaquille O'Neal, Reggie Miller, Chris Webber, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie. We're hoping for casting information any day now. Keep an eye out. “Schoolhouse,” a well-paid feature film is due to shoot in October and is looking to fill a diverse set of roles. Nathan DuConge is casting and it will be an impressive bit of nonunion work for anyone who lands a part.

Method Man praised late Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy as an all-time great Mc on The Chris Gethard Show. "In his heyday, he was top five in New York for sure," he said of Prodigy, who died in June at age 42.
Gethard, one of Rolling Stone's 50 Funniest People Right Now, highlighted Mobb Deep's 1994 track "Shook Ones (Part II)" as an example of Prodigy's brilliance. He also argued the "top five" assessment was high praise, coming from the Wu Tang Clan great – to which Method Man added, "I applaud excellence."

Fritz Lang continues his take-no-prisoners indictment of America’s curious relationship with crime; this time he presents the thesis that an innocent man can be a pawn in cosmic game of injustice. Three-time loser Henry Fonda, the glummest actor in ’30s films, doesn’t mean to rob or kill, but gosh darn it, They Made Him a Criminal. Those considerations aside, it’s a wonderful cinematic achievement, made all the better by a decent digital restoration.

Mubi's retrospective, Catherine Breillat, Auteur of Porn?, is showing April 4 - June 3, 2017 in Germany.Sex Is ComedyThroughout her career, Catherine Breillat has provided viewers with a long-form meta-cinema experience. While metacinema is as old as the medium itself, since her debut feature A Real Young Girl in 1976, Breillat has developed a distinct form of it: one that collapses ‘autobiographical’ material, various artistic sensibilities, and the process of filmmaking itself.Like dozens of other English words—such as ‘aesthetic’ or ‘abject’—the word ‘meta’ has been largely misused or misapplied with regard to the film and literary criticism. Regarding the consumption of fiction, the appropriate use of the term 'metafiction,' 'metafilm,' et cetera, has its basis in the Greek meta, which does not translate directly into English but can be understood as a preposition similar to the English word ‘about’ (‘having to do with,’ or ‘on the subject of’). Metafiction is therefore,...

“Here is the screen’s most shocking exposé, of the ‘Baby-Facers’ just taking their first stumbling steps down Sin Street U.S.A.!” Robert Altman’s first feature film is far too good to be described as any but an expert step toward an impressive career. The year was 1924; the place, New York City. A group of animals from the Central Park Zoo marched down a street in Harlem accompanied by a very special group of people: a handful of immigrant Macy’s employees, who wanted to express how thankful they were for living in the United States that year. And thus, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was born.
Though today the event is a big blowout, with A-list stars, Broadway performances and millions of spectators on hand to watch the marching bands, floats and balloons make their way downtown, the parade had humble beginnings,...

Seven episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
From Netflix and Marvel’s nocturnal vision of the sprawling New York City streets emerges Luke Cage, yet another tale of revenge and redemption, this time with the Wu-Tang Clan providing boom-bap beats for the bloody beatdowns. Viewers who push all of the adaptation anxiety and Defenders tie-in hype to the side for a moment will find a powerhouse of a show that mixes the provocative fantasy of blaxploitation with the pulpy intrigue of mob warfare to great success.
The fact that Luke Cage exists as a slice of a larger Netflix superhero pie alongside Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and the forthcoming Iron Fist will be the primary appeal to those obsessed with their eventual crossover team-up in The Defenders, but the show serves an arguably greater purpose in that it brings something to the fore that we’ve yet to see from Marvel.

Pretty-faced high schoolers play a deadly online game of truth or dare in Nerve, a breakneck thriller inspired by the gutless, faceless, merciless keyboard warriors who spit venom at others on blogs, message boards, comment sections and any other dark corner of the internet they can weasel their way into.

Ghostbusters is that rarest thing – a remake that is as much fun as the original (some would say more) that also honors the memorable original. Take that, internet grumblers!
Fans who were worried about this remake can relax – the results are very funny. The comedy is great, and non-stop, packed with clever affectionate references to the original. The logo and the catchy theme song are back (with a few remixes added), and the goofy humor of battling ghosts with technology is all there.
This is the kind of film you hope to see in summer – a movie just for fun that truly entertains.
Kristen Wiig re-teams with her Bridesmaids director Paul Feig and co-star Melissa McCarthy, for a hilarious romp that is like a superhero movie without the ponderous stuff. These folks know it is ridiculous and they are just here to entertain. Better yet, it should put to rest...

Umbrella Corps mounts a convincing, joyless argument for why Resident Evil should remain a single-player franchise. Resident Evil 4’s tried and true over-the-shoulder perspective inspired numerous multiplayer shooters, yet the series clung to its methodical gunplay throughout the generations … until now. Umbrella Corps takes a stab at the erratic online engagements that Uncharted and Gears of War pioneered. It only costs $29.99, but seeing as Capcom released Street Fighter V at full price without a story mode, let that fee be a warning.
Contemplate this, too: Was it the dearth of content, the gameplay’s unfinished qualities, or the generic multiplayer focus that compelled Capcom to ship Umbrella Corps with zero marketing fanfare? While Umbrella Corps shows Capcom is willing to wager time and money for radical ideas, those risks must pay off, like the welcoming response Resident Evil VII garnered at last week’s E3. This spinoff lacks the publisher’s absolute support.

Before discussing what that means, a moment of well-earned disclaimers about Marvel Lego sets. Jazz music has long expressed its capacity to borrow from various, sometimes contradictory sources in order to create something which in every sense transcends the original elements. Since the earliest days of jazz as a musical form, it has been inspired by military and funeral marches; has stylishly interpreted popular songs; and even brought the classical intricacies of Wagner into the domain of swinging brasses and reeds. This multiculturalism and eclecticism of jazz likens it to cinema which, in turn, has transformed pop culture motifs into something close to the sublime and mixed ‘high’ and ‘low’ artistic gestures to remarkable effect. In the history of jazz, the evolution from ragtime or traditional tunes, to discovering the treasure trove of Broadway songs was fast and smooth. The latter influence was shared by cinema, as the history of film production quickly marched on. The emergence of ‘talkies’ in the United States meant rediscovering Broadway,...

From tone to costume to powers to sidekicks to villains to love interests, here are a few tips for CBS' forthcoming Supergirl series...
It's official – Supergirl is coming to television next season.
We have an actress, a costume and an ever-growing list of characters being brought in from the comics and, at a time when female superheroes are still suspiciously absent from the slate of big film releases, executive producer Greg Berlanti and his team are expanding their television empire to include Kara Zor-El in addition to the already-successful Arrow and The Flash series.
But this show will be on a different network – CBS rather than The CW – and that’s not the only detail to suggest this will be a completely different series with new rules and, quite possibly, a new universe not connected to Oliver Queen and Barry Allen’s.
In so many ways, this is completely fresh territory,...

Meanwhile, Miss Gomez continued to post riddles to Instagram that may or may not be about her on-again-off-again relationship with Justin Bieber. The “Come and Get It” singer posted a life lesson, which read, “The moment you compare yourself [to another woman], it weakens you, and I'm not here for that. Once you know that reality [and] claim your space, your life becomes easier."
Selena captioned the photo, "#zoesaldana #womenempowerment you are all so beautiful the way You are. No bigger or smaller. You all inspire me."...

Robin Roberts and girlfriend Amber Laign held hands as they strolled through the busy New York City streets on Monday afternoon. The two did their best to stay warm in the chilly weather by sporting similar parkas, scarves and boots. The Good Morning America host wore a pair of gloves as she walked the couple's pet pooch during the outing. The sighting comes just a few short weeks after Roberts came out of the closet and announced on Facebook that she was in a relationship with the licensed massage therapist. "At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude. I am grateful to God, my doctors and nurses for my restored good health. I am grateful for my sister, Sally-Ann,...

I must have been about 12 years old when I first saw Tarzan and His Mate. I loved the Tarzan movies. Tarzan was the undisputed King of the Jungle and was the greatest, Cheetah was man’s best friend, Boy was annoying, and Jane was the Queen of the Jungle and a young male’s introduction to the allure of the female. The uncensored version, with a naked Jane silhouetted while changing clothes in a backlit tent and the spectacular underwater ballet scene would have been a revelation to me; Tarzan and Jane are frolicking in their favorite swimming hole, Tarzan in his usual loincloth and Jane naked – not naked from the waste up, or presumed naked as they hid her behind some lake flora or rocks – Jane was naked.

Bette Davis’ eyes keep ‘Watch on the Rhine’ Bette Davis’ eyes are watching everything and everyone on Turner Classic Movies this evening, as TCM continues with its "Summer Under the Stars" film series: today, August 14, 2013, belongs to two-time Oscar winner Bette Davis’ eyes, cigarettes, and clipped tones. Right now, TCM is showing the Herman Shumlin-directed Watch on the Rhine (1943), an earnest — too much so, in fact — melodrama featuring Nazis, anti-Nazis, and lofty political speeches. (See “Bette Davis Movies: TCM schedule.”) As a prestigious and timely Warner Bros. release, Watch on the Rhine was nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award and earned Paul Lukas the year’s Best Actor Oscar. Bette Davis has a subordinate role and — for once during her years as Warners’ Reigning Queen — subordinate billing as well. As so often happens when Davis tried to play a sympathetic character, she’s not very good; Lukas, however,...

Girls won't be back until next year — there's no firm premiere date yet, but last season started in January. Until then, there are these photos, taken as the show films on New York City streets, to tide us over. From the looks of these shots, Hannah does indeed appear to be with or at least pleasantly around Adam. Marnie is still in her messy phase (if knit hats are any indication), which is perhaps thanks to Charlie's abrupt departure. Jessa's as Earth-goddessy as ever, and Shosh is still devoted to polka dots. Unfortunately, no Ray sightings just yet.
