The character played by Rudolph Valentino was called "Ross Wilbur" in the novel by Frank Norris on which the film was based, but the name was changed to "Ramon Laredo" for the film to accommodate Valentino's non-American appearance.
There wre other changes made to the plot as well: in the original novel, Captain Kitchell goes down with the Lady Letty, the villainous group are Chinese pirates, and Moran is actually killed by Hoang, the pirate leader, and Kitchell 's ship breaks loose and goes out to sea where it sinks just as Ross Wilbur arrives. It's unkown why these changes were made for the film version, but, possibly because the plot would've violated the Hays act, the film was never remade.
As Ramon walks to the bar after missing the yacht, Moran and her father are walking into a theater. Films advertised outside the theater are Elmo Lincoln in "Under Crimson Skies" and the French serial, "Fantomas."
