The Wildcats - who were 18-7 last season and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament - will be playing their second exhibition of the preseason after opening with a 77-48 loss at Washington. Chris Sprinker is Central Washington's top returning scorer from last season when he averaged 7.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. He is joined by Jon Clift - the lone returning starter for the Wildcats - who averaged 5.3 points while shooting .452 from downtown in 2008-09. The Cougars opened their exhibition season with a 74-56 win against Trinity Western on Nov. 3. Junior guard Jimmer Fredette led BYU with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting while adding six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Senior forward Jonathan Tavernari added 18 points and a team-high eight boards.
- he BYU men's basketball team will host Trinity Western University, the first of two exhibition games for the Cougars, in the Marriott Center on Thursday at 7 p.m. Trinity Western is a private, Christian-affiliated university located in British Columbia, Canada. The Spartans will play three contests in Utah, traveling to Utah Valley University on Tuesday before heading to Provo and then Utah State. Jacob Doerksen, a 6-foot-6 senior from British Columbia, leads the team with an average of 15.0 ppg and 7.5 rpg while Calvin Westbrook, a 6-foot-5 junior, is averaging 10.5 ppg. Trinity Western is 1-1 after defeating Waterloo and losing to British Columbia. The Cougars return four starters, including conference first-teamer Jimmer Fredette and third-team selection Jonathan Tavernari, to a team that won its third-straight Mountain West Conference championship and finished with a 25-8 record in 2008-09.
- With a nine-game unbeaten streak on their record, the No. 11 BYU Cougars return home to South Field to take on conference opponent New Mexico Freshman Carlee Payne leads the Cougar offense with nine goals and 38 shots. Teammate Kassidy C. Shumway follows with four goals and 27 shots. Shumway was recently named MWC Offesnive Player of the Week for her game-winning goal against UNLV. New Mexico (10-2-2, 2-1-0) is led by Jennifer Williams with nine goals and 58 shots. Nine Lobos have taken double-figure shots this season. The Lobos recently reached their 10-win mark, the first time since 2002, after their win over Air Force.
- This will be BYU's first contest against Oklahoma State. Monday's game will showcase two 2009 Hermann Trophy Watch List Candidates with BYU defender Willis and Oklahoma State forward Langdon.
- The Cougars (8-2-1) hold a 119-25-8 all-time home record after recent wins over Southern Utah and Utah State, and are currently on a five-game winning streak. BYU is led by freshman Carlee Payne with eight goals and 30 shots this season. Payne has scored a goal in eight of BYU's 11 games. Payne and fellow freshman teammate Lindsi Lisonbee have both started every game for the Cougars this year. Cougar Hermann Trophy Candidate Andrea Willis was recently named MWC Defensive Player-of-the-Week for the second time this season after a goal scored against Southern Utah and a strong defensive stance leading to a shutout win over Utah State. The No. 14 Oregon Ducks (7-1-1) are on a six-game winning streak with its most recent win over Portland State. Jen Stoltenberg leads the team with six goals and 37 shots. Six Ducks have taken double-figure shots this season. The Cougars holds a 1-0 record against the Ducks, winning 1-0 in their last meeting in 1996. This is BYU's first time hosting Oregon at South Field.
- Returning from an undefeated two-game stretch at Penn State where the Cougars defeated No. 20 UConn and No. 9 West Virginia by one point in each, BYU looks to continue it's winning streak and current shut-out of all its opponents. BYU is 12-2-0 in home game season openers and has an 115 -24-8 overall home record at South Field. This season, no opponents have had more than five shots on goal against the Cougars and they have yet to allow a goal against them. Sophomore goalie McKinzie Olson has now had three consecutive shut-outs in a row after BYU's win over West Virginia. Senior defender Andrea Willis anchors the BYU defense as a 2009 Hermann Trophy Candidate and Preseason All-American. Willis was also awarded Mountain West Conference Player-of-the-Week accolades on Aug. 31. The William and Mary Tribe come to Provo with a 1-1 record thus far this season after a 3-1 win against Monmouth on Friday, Aug 28. Two William & Mary team members, junior Kaitlin O'Connor and sophomore Diana Weigel, were named to the preseason All-CAA teams for 2009. Weigel leads the Tribe with two assists on the season.
- After going 0-3 at the Ameritas Players Challenge in Nebraska the BYU Cougars (4-6) will return home to open Mountain West Conference play against San Diego State (4-4) on Thursday in the Smith Fieldhouse.
- The Cougars have been consistently successful against the Warriors at home, winning five of the last six meetings in the Smith Fieldhouse, including four straight. BYU holds a 25-14 all-time advantage over Hawai'i, most recently winning both matches played at the Stan Sheriff Center in 2008. Hawai'i won five of the first seven matches played between the two teams. Since then, the Cougars have ruled the series. Since its victory on Feb. 1, 1997, BYU has posted a 19-6 record against the Warriors, including two separate streaks of five and six consecutive wins.
