In Biedermeier Vienna, Oberleutnant Fischbacher has fallen in love with the steadfast chambermaid Franzi, who of course rejects him. When he hears that she is said to have heard someone else, he is disappointed and composes a hit song about the immorality of Viennese parlor maids. The little song becomes a hit, but the objects of ridicule are only moderately enthusiastic and go on strike for the upcoming Radetzkyball.

Vienna, at the height of the Great Depression. Like so many others, Hans has no work, no money, nowhere to live. Having lost his livelihood as a taxi driver, he decides that the only solution is to kill himself. But just as he is about to drown himself, he sees a young woman dive into the river, obviously with the same intention. Without a thought, Hans pulls the woman out of the water and does his best to comfort her. Her name is Anna and she is only 18, but like Hans she no longer has the strength to go on living.

On a steamer bound for Europe two competing European investors try to get hold of a contract for exploiting oil wells in Brazil. Several agents cleverly play off one investor against the other to up the ante of a bogus scheme.

It's grand premiere at the Revue Theater in Vienna, not only for a new spectacular revue in the large scale, but also for a new star: Carmen Daviot. In his office the theatre manager Frank listens to the former star Lydia Loo, who is complaining bitterly for being thrown out of the revue, because the financier Reinhold has rejected her in favor of his new protégée. When Reinhold arrives to the office, she pulls a pistol, but the actor Fred Nissen takes the gun away. Nissen visits Carmen in her dressing room, wanting them to be lovers again, just as in the old days in the Western-Varieté. Reinhold enters, gets furious when seeing Nissen, who responds by pointing at him with Lydia's gun. It's time for Carmen Daviot to make her spectacular entrance in the revue. This ends with her, Nissen and the ballet performing a choreographed shooting act. During the act someone shoots Reinhold in his box from the stage, without the audience noticing it. Inspector Helder, who is in the theatre, immediately starts investigating the murder. Carmen believes that Nissen committed it, and tries to protect him, now knowing for sure that she loves him.

Composer Franz Schubert--broke, struggling and unhappy--gets a break when a wealthy friend wangles him an invitation to a command performance in front of a princess of the royal family. Schubert performs a version of his new work, "Symphony in B Minor", for the princess, but a misunderstanding results in Schubert storming out of the concert in a rage. Complications ensue.

Evil spirit Lumpazivagabundus and good fairy Fortuna battle for the souls of tempted artisans Knieriem, Zwirn and Leim who struggle to do the right thing in their love and money affairs. Not even cracking the jackpot solves any problem.

To a wealth of fine past performances available for listening or viewing may be added this live staging recorded during the 2005 Seefestspiele Moerbisch Austria Festival with a cast headed by Harald Serafin, Mathias Hausmann, Margarita De Arellano and Elisabeth Starzinger, Rudolf Bibl conducting.

Lixie joins the Archduke for an evening the "Red Salon" in the Hotel Sacher, where she convinces the Archduke to extend his patronage to her "brother" Toni. This leads to embarrassing entanglements all around, but also to a romantic encounter that touches both of them. The next morning, the entire matter becomes a political scandal: Viennese society cannot let an affair between the Archduke and a commoner go unnoticed. Lixie's friend and neighbor Mizzi, a dancer at the Court Ballet, steps forward to help untangle the matter.
