Island is one of the most simple yet poignant expressions of isolation that I have ever seen. Joel Haver uses the film's minimal resources masterfully, he makes a homemade set feel grounded even as it is surreal, and transitions cohesively with brilliant cinematography to the latter half's natural setting. He's an artist who knows how to use limitations to his benefit, as the medium and the solo nature of the project work in favour of Island's themes. It isn't a Hollywood blockbuster, but this allows it to be so much more personal and emotionally raw, and express the difficulty of human connection in a far more authentic way than any large-crew, large-budget movie. Sadly Island is basically lost media now. A masterpiece that no one can experience from here on. It is a unique piece of time, which only makes it all the more special and precious that I was able to watch it.
