SUMMARY

A young Asian woman loops in her two best friends (a horny artist, and a pure but secretely dirty Chinese actress) and a tag along cousin to find her birth mother, for a business meeting. Ultimately, she discovers she's not actually Chinese, fights with her friends, but then reconciles at the end.

RATING

C

My favorite sequence was the horny part of the movie where all the girls are having sex (or trying to not have sex) with members of the basketball team. That was hilarious. I appreciate that Joy Ride goes deeper into the complexities of friendship rather than a search for a birth mother. This isn't quite a story about "identity", but rather, about "friendship" which I think is more interesting. I really liked the twist that Audrey is actually Korean rather than Chinese, and I found some of the moments pretty funny, with Sabrina Wu as "Deadeye" the standout among the group of friends. Still, overall I wasn't that entertained, and I hate that I am reacting prudishly, but the full frontal vagina shot was a little too much for me. I'm not offended or horrified, I just didn't find it all that funny. I also found the dialogue pretty lacking.
