FUTURE COPS might just be Wong Jing's most insane movie, which is impressive given his filmography. It's a high school comedy mixed with the crazed action hijinks of the Japanese arcade game STREET FIGHTER, with all of the main stars playing double roles. The story is also about time travel, beginning with a future battle before shifting to the present day where the good and bad guys are after the same person and get involved with the usual shenanigans involving bullies and pretty school girls.
It's insane, inventive stuff, all of an excuse for an extremely Chinese-feeling madcap brand of comedy, full of sight gags and surreal moments with people acting like video game characters. The cast is quite excellent, with the triumvirate of Jacky Cheung, Simon Yam and Andy Lau excelling as the larger-than-life heroes matched by Ekin Cheng, Billy Chow and Ken Lo as the baddies. Chingmy Lau is always a feisty and welcome presence and there's a great little cameo from Richard Ng too. The action is a highlight, bringing the fights to life in an over-the-top way very familiar to that famous scene in Jackie Chan's CITY HUNTER, with lots of little in-jokes and references for the fans.
