Certain parameters for the new limited series version of Armistead Maupin’s “Tales of the City” were already set when showrunner Lauren Morelli joined the project — most notably the fact that Mary Ann Singleton (Laura Linney) would be returning to 28 Barbary Lane for Anna Madrigal’s (Olympia Dukakis) 90th birthday, which Morelli calls “a really amazing log line.” From there, though, Morelli had reign to bring the story forward for the modern audience, as well as to create a new mystery around Anna’s past — a mystery, she says, that “almost killed” her writers.

“The writers’ room board looked like we were serial killers,” Morelli tells Variety. “It was elaborate graphs of, ‘What does the audience know, and what do they need to know, and what do we withhold?...

A few holdouts aside, the gay TV show has mostly gone the way of the gay bar. Acceptance and equality come at a cost — when you’re finally allowed in the club, there’s no more need to make your own. Like the tragic closing of storied San Francisco gay bars Gangway or The Lex, gone are the days of solely gay shows like “Queer As Folk” or “The L Word” (pending reboots). Television no longer has to cater solely to gay audiences in order to tell nuanced gay stories.

Enter the next chapter of “Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City,” which picks up 20 years after its last installment and doesn’t miss a beat. Though the mini-series was highly controversial when it first aired on PBS, Netflix’s continuation feels like a warm embrace from an old friend; an unconventional marriage between rose-colored nostalgia and progressive identity politics.

When Armistead Maupin began writing Tales of the City — his serialized, sudsy stories about life in San Francisco in the late Seventies — the central character was a very naive, very straight Midwestern girl, Mary Ann Singleton. Mary Ann served as a point-of-entry figure for readers unversed in queer fiction, just as Laura Linney’s portrayal of Mary Ann did the same in 1993’s acclaimed PBS adaptation of the first Tales book. (Two additional miniseries were produced for Showtime over the next decade, with diminishing returns.)

Netflix has released the full-length trailer for “Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City,” and Laura Linney’s Mary Ann Singleton has a secret to reveal to her on-screen daughter Shawna, played by Ellen Page.

Linney is reprising the role she originated in the ’90s TV miniseries based on Maupin’s novel series of the same name. Olympia Dukakis will also return to her role as Anna Madrigal, along with Barbara Garrick as DeDe Halcyon Day and Paul Gross as Brian Hawkins.

The returning cast are joined by new cast members including Page, “Russian Doll” star Charlie Barnett, Murray Bartlett, Josiah Victoria Garcia and May Hong.

The trailer shows Madrigal (Dukakis) and Singleton (Linney) reuniting at Barbary Lane, and having a heart-to-heart in which Singleton says, “Shawna deserves to know the truth.”

Netflix has released the first trailer for a new limited series they are producing called Tales of the City, which is inspired by the books by Armistead Maupin.

The story follows Mary Ann (Laura Linney), “who returns home to San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian, twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann returns home to her chosen family and will quickly be drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis) and the residents of 28 Barbary Lane.”

The new 10-episode mini-series is based on Maupin’s series of novels and serves as the “next chapter” of the TV adaptations, which premiered on PBS in 1993 then hit Showtime in 1998 and 2001. Linney is reprising her role as Mary Ann Singleton, while Olympia Dukakis will once again portray Mary Ann’s eccentric landlady, Anna Madrigal.

Netflix released the first teaser on Tuesday for its upcoming “Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City,” a follow-up to the ’90s TV miniseries starring Laura Linney and based on Maupin’s novel series of the same name.

“Tales of the City” follows the adventures of Mary Ann Singleton, a naive young woman from Ohio who impulsively decided to stay in San Francisco after visiting for a vacation, and her developing friendships and relationships among the city’s colorful, eccentric denizens. The first novel was adapted as a 1993 miniseries, followed by a series based on the second book in 1998, and a series based on the third in 2001.

The productions starred Linney as Mary Ann, with Olympia Dukakis as Anna Madrigal and Barbara Garrickwill as DeDe Halcyon Day.

San Francisco's 28 Barbary Lane has aged quite gracefully in the first peek at Netflix's revival of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City.

The streamer has released a teaser for the series, a continuation of the three miniseries based on Maupin's Lgbtq-themed novels that aired on PBS and Showtime starting in 1994. It's set to premiere June 7.

Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, Barbara Garrick and Paul Gross will all reprise their roles from the original; Ellen Page, Murray Bartlett (Looking), Charlie Barnett, Josiah Victoria Garcia and May Hong also will be series regulars.

Paul Gross returns to reprise his role as Brian Hawkins from the original miniseries, ex-husband of Mary Ann Singleton and father of Shawna Hawkins, played by previously announced Laura Linney and Ellen Page, respectively. The series is currently in production for a 2019 premiere.
