Several films will arrive before and in the wake of the latest box office showdown including Disney’s Moana 2, which almost went up against Wicked before the first part of the film duology shifted earlier to the same Friday as Gladiator II.

With just weeks until Moana 2 hits theaters, Disney has shared the highly anticipated sequel's lead single, titled "Beyond."

The powerful new track emphasizes Moana's desire, and trepidation, to answer the call of the ocean. "What lies beyond?" Moana voice actor Auli’i Cravalho belts. "Under skies I've never seen / Will I lose myself between my home and what's unknown?"

"If I go beyond leaving all I love behind / With the future of our people still to find / Can I go beyond?" the ballad continues.

"Beyond," performed by Auli'i Cravalho and written by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, is the first featured track from Moana 2. And it marks the first song that audiences can hear from the movie's new composers Barlow and Emily Bear. The duo took over for Lin-Manuel Miranda after he composed the soundtrack for the first film.

With a possible record-breaking opening weekend, Disney Animation’s “Moana 2” is set to make box office history this Thanksgiving. Based on what the movie business knows, the cartoon sequel could make between $125 million and $135 million over the five-day holiday weekend, more than any previous Thanksgiving animated film record.

This movie stands out because it went from being an online series to a movie theater release, which wasn’t expected. The project went through a huge change after CEO Bob Iger took back control. It was first planned for Disney+ as a limited series. Iger talked about the series’ popularity during an earnings call in February 2024. He said the original “Moana” had recently surpassed 1 billion hours of streaming and was the most-watched movie in the U.S. in 2023.

The first full song from the upcoming Moana 2, “Beyond,” has been released!

Star Auli’i Cravalho belts out the end credits version of the new song, which will be featured in the Disney sequel.

The track was written by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, and “encapsulates Moana’s fearless sense of adventure and connecting her island beyond its shores.”

“’Beyond’ really impacted me as someone who feels deeply connected to my culture,” Auli’i shared in a statement. “It’s about going beyond what you’re capable of, beyond your comfort zone, and not doing it just for yourself, doing it for your people.”

That would best the record $125M five-day (not opening) Thanksgiving haul of Frozen 2 ($125M) and the $93.5M five-day opening of Frozen.

The sequel opens Nov. 27, a Wednesday. The long holiday weekend is one of the most lucrative times of the year in terms of moviegoing, and this year’s feast is shaping up to be a bonanza, between Moana 2, Paramount’s Gladiator II and Universal’s musical spectacle Wicked. A creator conference for and by Gen Z just wrapped up its inaugural year of festivities. At Zcon, which took in New York City from October 24-25, the lineup of speakers, presenters, and panelists was filled with Gen Z creators, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders.

Zcon was put on by UTA, the talent agency with a significant foothold in the creator space. As explained on the Zcon website, UTA organized the gathering to “provide business leaders and stakeholders with the tools and knowledge necessary to better understand young people, so they can meaningfully show up for Gen Z.”

To that end, the stage at The Skylight Penthouse featured a rotating cast of twentysomethings. Participants included influencers like Anna Sitar, activists like Amelie Zilber, actors like Moana‘s Auli’i Cravalho, and founders like Cam Kasky of March For Our Lives.

Whenever a new Disney animated movie hits, folks are ready for a song from it to be nominated for an Oscar and, more often than not, winning. It’s been that way since the 1990s and has led to some intriguing choices and winners.

With Moana in 2016, it was no shock that Tony-award-winning writer/composer Lin-Manuel Miranda provided some great songs. The one nominated for the Oscar was “You’re Welcome,” which lost the award to “City of Stars” from La La Land.

Miranda won’t be handling the writing duties for Moana 2. Instead, the songs come from Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, best known for the acclaimed unofficial Bridgerton: The Musical and getting a huge break with this film.

Exclusive: Disney’s Moana 2 landed on long-lead tracking this morning and it’s looking to do $100M+ over its Wednesday through Sunday opening, $75M-$82M of that during its Friday-Sunday portion. These figures come from tracking service Quorum. The first Moana back in 2016 opened to $82M over five days ultimately grossing $248.7M stateside.

If the Moana 2 forecasts stay firm, it’s a fantastic comeback for Disney which has typically owned the Thanksgiving Day stretch with all-mass animated film, but has seen any big luster since 2019’s Frozen 2‘s did $125M — the biggest take for any movie playing over the Thanksgiving holiday in U.S./Canada.

Also at $100M+ (Quorum technically sees $105M-$115M), that would rep the biggest opening for a movie opening on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving — that record belonging to Disney’s 2013 Frozen with $93.5M (Frozen 2 opened the Friday before Thanksgiving).

The 28-year-old actress, best known for 13 Reasons Why and Knives Out, celebrated the press night for her run in the musical Cabaret in the West End on Thursday (October 17) in London, England.

Katherine is playing the role of Sally Bowles opposite Adam Gillen as the Emcee for a limited engagement through January 25, 2025.

The West End revival of Cabaret picked up seven Olivier Awards, including Best Musical Revival. The same production is now running on Broadway with Auli’i Cravalho and Adam Lambert leading the show.

Broadway newcomers Sunset Blvd. and Romeo + Juliet, both in previews, topped the $1M mark in weekly grosses last week, while interesting things were happening over at Wicked: The long-running musical had its best week, by far, of the 2024-25 season, hitting nearly $2.5M.

The Wicked figure is a leap of $440,313 over the previous week and easily bests its previous season high of $2.2M from July. Looks like all the publicity surrounding the upcoming November movie release is having a definite Broadway impact, and — bonus points — Broadway favorite Donna McKechnie recently joined the production as Madame Morrible.

The Wicked take — $2,486,411, to be exact — put it at No. 1 on the Broadway box office chart for the week ending October 13, edging out its usual neck-and-neck rival The Lion King, which came in at No. 2 with $2,198,308.

Sunset Blvd., Jamie Lloyd’s revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical starring Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis, topped the $1 million mark in weekly grosses last week, filling the St. James Theatre for all six previews and joining the ranks of McNeal and Romeo + Juliet as Broadway’s most recent powerhouse newcomers.

Though it fell short of sell-out with attendance at about 93% capacity, Sunset Blvd. took in a strong $1,075,922 for the week ending October 6. Opening night for the revival is October 20.

Staying strong was Romeo + Juliet, director Sam Gold’s Shakespeare adaptation starring Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, at standing room only for 7 previews at Circle in the Square and a $950,099 take. Opening night is October 24.

McNeal, with Robert Downey Jr. in his Broadway debut, had a good opening week at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater, filling the venue and grossing $969,768 for six performances.

It’s hard to believe, but the original “Moana” was released eight years ago. That’s a long time for a film that feels like it’s still relatively “new.” Alas, it’s been quite a while, which makes it the perfect time for Disney to release a sequel.

Oh Mary! broke the box office record at the Lyceum Theatre for the sixth time last week, with a gross of $1.16 million.

The show, written by and starring Cole Escola as a reimagined Mary Todd Lincoln, has played to 100 percent capacity almost every week of its run, which began at the end of June. The play also had the highest average paid admission in the industry last week, with an average ticket price of $162.25, edging out shows such as Hamilton, best musical winner The Outsiders and the new play McNeal, starring Robert Downey Jr.

McNeal, which is still in previews at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater, stands out among the crop of new shows coming this fall, having pulled in a strong $1.2 million across seven performances last week (the theater has a larger seating capacity than Oh Mary!). The play, which depicts Downey as an author obsessed with artificial intelligence,...

With only three Broadway productions selling out last week, total grosses for the 29 shows was down about 7% from the previous week, settling in at $25,296,948. Total attendance was 226,267 for the week ending September 22, a slip of about 4% from the previous week.

The sell-outs, as usual, were Oh, Mary!; The Outsiders; and McNeal, starring Robert Downey Jr. in his Broadway debut. Stereophonic came close with attendance at 99% of capacity.

Mia Farrow was back at the Booth after a week out due to Covid, resuming her place opposite Patti LuPone in The Roommate. Attendance was at 85% of capacity.

Also of note: Adam Lambert and Auli’I Cravalho began their star turns in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, taking over from original cast members Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin. A $640,719 drop in grosses can be at least partially attributed to significant press tickets and other comps for the week.

New “Moana 2” images posted by Entertainment Weekly give us a look at Moana’s little sister, Simea. The new character is three-and-a-half years old and is played by Khalessi Lambert-Tsuda. Lambert-Tsuda described her character to EW as “cute and energetic.”

Simea’s purpose in the film is to anchor Moana to her home in Motunui.

Adam Lambert and Auli’i Cravalho will be making their Broadway debuts Tonight and we have the first photos of them in Cabaret!

The actors will be taking over the roles of Emcee and Sally Bowles from original cast members Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, who departed the production this past weekend.

Adam and Auli’i will be playing a limited engagement through March 30, 2025. Casting for the roles of Emcee and Sally Bowles after March 30 will be announced in the new year.

Also joining the production tonight (September 16) are Calvin Leon Smith as Clifford Bradshaw and Michelle Aravena as Fritzie/Kost.

If you didn’t know, Adam actually got his start in performing as a musical theatre actor, appearing in the national touring production of Wicked before he shot to fame on American Idol season eight.

While Auli’i has starred in multiple movie musicals, this is her first time on Broadway!

The team behind Moana 2 is ready to welcome viewers back into the powerful world of the title characters and her fellow islanders.

During a press event held Monday at Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, Calif., the filmmakers debuted the first 30 minutes from the sequel to the 2016 animated feature. Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin are getting ready to say goodbye to the Broadway musical Cabaret.

The Tony-nominated co-stars were honored with portraits at the iconic restaurant Sardi’s on Thursday (September 5) in New York City.

The walls of Sardi’s is covered with caricature drawings of Broadway’s biggest stars and receiving one is often considered one of the biggest honors for theater actors.

Eddie and Gayle will be wrapping their runs in Cabaret on September 14 and they’ll be succeeded by Adam Lambert and Auli’i Cravalho beginning on September 16.

The Sardi’s event was also attended by Cabaret‘s original Emcee actor Joel Grey and the 2014 revival’s Herr Schulz actor Danny Burstein, who performed alongside Gayle when she played Fraulein Kost in the previous production. Their dressing rooms were next door to each other at Studio 54!

Moana 2 just unveiled a new trailer, and there's so much more to enjoy in this surprise sequel!

Disney making a sequel to one of its biggest animated hits is no surprise. What was Disney announcing that Moana 2 would drop on Thanksgiving of 2024, with almost no advance warning that it was even in development. The plot details have been tight, but it should be another great adventure of Moana (Auli'i Cravalho) going on a quest to save her people and aided once more by the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson). 

The new trailer has shown more of the story and action and a few interesting things to note as we prepare for this big sequel!
