With just weeks until Moana 2 hits theaters, Disney has shared the highly anticipated sequel's lead single, titled "Beyond."
The powerful new track emphasizes Moana's desire, and trepidation, to answer the call of the ocean. "What lies beyond?" Moana voice actor Auli’i Cravalho belts. "Under skies I've never seen / Will I lose myself between my home and what's unknown?"
"If I go beyond leaving all I love behind / With the future of our people still to find / Can I go beyond?" the ballad continues.
"Beyond," performed by Auli'i Cravalho and written by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, is the first featured track from Moana 2. And it marks the first song that audiences can hear from the movie's new composers Barlow and Emily Bear. The duo took over for Lin-Manuel Miranda after he composed the soundtrack for the first film.

With a possible record-breaking opening weekend, Disney Animation’s “Moana 2” is set to make box office history this Thanksgiving. Based on what the movie business knows, the cartoon sequel could make between $125 million and $135 million over the five-day holiday weekend, more than any previous Thanksgiving animated film record.
This movie stands out because it went from being an online series to a movie theater release, which wasn’t expected. The project went through a huge change after CEO Bob Iger took back control. It was first planned for Disney+ as a limited series. Iger talked about the series’ popularity during an earnings call in February 2024. He said the original “Moana” had recently surpassed 1 billion hours of streaming and was the most-watched movie in the U.S. in 2023.

Disney’s dropped the official music video for “Beyond,” the end credit track from the family-friendly animated sequel Moana 2. Grammy Award-winning songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (Barlow & Bear) wrote “Beyond” and Auli‘i Cravalho sings the song which tells the story of Moana’s journey and her connection to her beloved island.
“During the process of writing this, we spoke to a lot of people who come from Oceania and the Polynesian Islands, and what rings true to all of them is their deep connection to their heritage and how they honor their ancestors. No matter how daunting this journey is to Moana, she can’t refuse it. It scares her but also exhilarates her because it’s a call from the ancestors. And the idea that the ocean connects us all is a very big part of Pacific Island culture and wayfinding culture,” said Barlow & Bear.

As we told you recently, Disney’s Moana 2 is heading to the best five-day opening ever at the Thanksgiving box office. We gave the six-weekend projection from Quorum, and this morning tracking service Nrg — which reports three-weekend-out forecasts — is saying the Polynesian princess sequel is going to clear $135M over Wednesday-Sunday. That would best the record $125M five-day (not opening) Thanksgiving haul of Frozen 2 ($125M) and the $93.5M five-day opening of Frozen.
Presales for Moana 2 are ahead of Inside Out 2 and Incredibles 2, which opened to $154.2M and $182.6M (3-day), respectively. Tickets went on sale October 28 for the pic starring Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson.
Moana 2 is hot with millennials, who remember the original 2016 movie fondly, as well as kids 6-11 (even boys want to see it) and general audiences ages 12-54. AMC CEO Adam Aron said on an earnings call that he heard the...

Walt Disney Animation’s Moana 2 is sailing toward a record-shattering $125 million-$135 million opening over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday corridor, according to tracking data shared with The Hollywood Reporter.
The sequel opens Nov. 27, a Wednesday. The long holiday weekend is one of the most lucrative times of the year in terms of moviegoing, and this year’s feast is shaping up to be a bonanza, between Moana 2, Paramount’s Gladiator II and Universal’s musical spectacle Wicked. The latter two tentpoles unfurl Nov. 22 in order to get a jump on the holiday, and are likewise tracking to strong numbers, potentially meaning that holiday revenue could hit an all-time high, led by Moana 2. That’s welcome news for struggling theater owners; this week AMC Theatres chief Adam Aron said Moana 2 could be bigger than Pixar/Disney’s Inside Out 2.

Strong winds are benefiting Moana 2 as it sails into shore.

(It’s no wonder why box office observers have bequeathed the sequel with its own special moniker: “Moanapocalpyse.”)
The event pic hits theaters on Nov. 27, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and five days after Paramount’s Gladiator II and Universal’s Wicked open nationwide in North America. Theater owners are counting on the trio of highly anticipated tentpoles to shore up ticket sales after a tough start to the third quarter.

Deadpool & Wolverine‘s risqué and suggestive buckets also made it to the list of Nsfw movie collectibles. Moana 2 has revealed which songs are being submitted for Oscar consideration, and the choices highlight an unusual Oscar “rule” Disney inspired!
Whenever a new Disney animated movie hits, folks are ready for a song from it to be nominated for an Oscar and, more often than not, winning. It’s been that way since the 1990s and has led to some intriguing choices and winners.
With Moana in 2016, it was no shock that Tony-award-winning writer/composer Lin-Manuel Miranda provided some great songs. The one nominated for the Oscar was “You’re Welcome,” which lost the award to “City of Stars” from La La Land.
Miranda won’t be handling the writing duties for Moana 2. Instead, the songs come from Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, best known for the acclaimed unofficial Bridgerton: The Musical and getting a huge break with this film.

How far will these songs go? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has selected the two “Moana 2” songs it will submit for Best Original Song consideration at the 97th Academy Awards. The two tracks are “Beyond” and “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?,” which kids and parents will become familiar with when the film opens in theaters next month.
Both songs have music and lyrics by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, who are taking over original songwriting duties from Lin-Manuel Miranda, who was nominated for Best Original Song in 2016 for the first film’s breakout song, “How Far I’ll Go.” “Beyond” also features Pacific choral vocals written and arranged by Opetaia Foa’i, who is a composer of film’s score along with Mark Mancina. It’s described as the film’s “I want” song, a tradition in Disney musicals where the heroine states her goal for the story in an early number.

In the paperwork identifying which tunes should be considered for the best original song Oscar for Disney’s forthcoming animated musical Moana 2, the company could have chosen any number of high-quality options featured on the film’s soundtrack, but, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, the studio is submitting just two: “Beyond” and “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?”
Both numbers feature music and lyrics by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear. “Beyond,” which also includes Pacific choral vocals written and arranged by Opetaia Foa’i, is essentially this film’s version of the first Moana’s “How Far I’ll Go” (the only song submitted for the 2016 film, and one which wound up with a nomination). “Beyond” is the classic Disney “I want” anthem and is performed in the film by the actress who plays the title character, Auli’i Cravalho (alongside Rachel House in the 2024 film). Meanwhile, “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?...

Sunset Blvd brought in $1.2 million last week, despite having five performances that included many comped tickets for press leading up to opening night on Oct. 20, as well as an entirely comped opening night.
The revival, which received raves for Nicole Scherzinger’s performance but varying reviews for its take on the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, played to close to 100 percent capacity at the St. James Theatre.
Romeo + Juliet also welcomed press last week, and still brought in a strong $1.06 million for its first full week of eight performances and played to more than 100 percent capacity at the Circle in the Square Theatre. The play, starring Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, opens Oct. 24.
After the highs of last week, around the holiday weekend, several shows fell back to more standard grosses. Making up the top three in the industry, Wicked grossed $2.2 million, about $250,000 less than last week, The Lion King made $2 million,...

Exclusive: Disney’s Moana 2 landed on long-lead tracking this morning and it’s looking to do $100M+ over its Wednesday through Sunday opening, $75M-$82M of that during its Friday-Sunday portion. These figures come from tracking service Quorum. The first Moana back in 2016 opened to $82M over five days ultimately grossing $248.7M stateside.
If the Moana 2 forecasts stay firm, it’s a fantastic comeback for Disney which has typically owned the Thanksgiving Day stretch with all-mass animated film, but has seen any big luster since 2019’s Frozen 2‘s did $125M — the biggest take for any movie playing over the Thanksgiving holiday in U.S./Canada.
Also at $100M+ (Quorum technically sees $105M-$115M), that would rep the biggest opening for a movie opening on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving — that record belonging to Disney’s 2013 Frozen with $93.5M (Frozen 2 opened the Friday before Thanksgiving).

Broadway newcomers Sunset Blvd. and Romeo + Juliet, both in previews, topped the $1M mark in weekly grosses last week, while interesting things were happening over at Wicked: The long-running musical had its best week, by far, of the 2024-25 season, hitting nearly $2.5M.
The Wicked figure is a leap of $440,313 over the previous week and easily bests its previous season high of $2.2M from July. Looks like all the publicity surrounding the upcoming November movie release is having a definite Broadway impact, and — bonus points — Broadway favorite Donna McKechnie recently joined the production as Madame Morrible.
The Wicked take — $2,486,411, to be exact — put it at No. 1 on the Broadway box office chart for the week ending October 13, edging out its usual neck-and-neck rival The Lion King, which came in at No. 2 with $2,198,308.
The stellar number helped push total Broadway receipts to $34,268,132 for the week ending October 13, a bump...

Chee hoo! Moana, Maui, Heihei, Pua the pig, and the dart-wielding Kakamora have returned for Disney Animation's Moana 2. Thanks to Toonado.com, we have a new trailer and poster for the animated musical which started life as a Disney+ TV series.
Despite its small screen origins - Disney CEO Bob Iger decided the show would work better as a feature - the visuals are gorgeous and this looks like a suitably epic adventure for the title character. While box office revenue was another factor in its evolution, this does look like a worthy follow-up to the 2016 hit.
The sequel reunites Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) and Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

Sunset Blvd., Jamie Lloyd’s revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical starring Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis, topped the $1 million mark in weekly grosses last week, filling the St. James Theatre for all six previews and joining the ranks of McNeal and Romeo + Juliet as Broadway’s most recent powerhouse newcomers.
Though it fell short of sell-out with attendance at about 93% capacity, Sunset Blvd. took in a strong $1,075,922 for the week ending October 6. Opening night for the revival is October 20.
Staying strong was Romeo + Juliet, director Sam Gold’s Shakespeare adaptation starring Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, at standing room only for 7 previews at Circle in the Square and a $950,099 take. Opening night is October 24.
McNeal, with Robert Downey Jr. in his Broadway debut, had a good opening week at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater, filling the venue and grossing $969,768 for six performances.

What have we here? It's a sparkly, shiny... new trailer for Moana 2, of course. With just over a month to go before Disney's sequel to their seafaring 2016 smash Moana hits cinemas, the House of Mouse are teasing more of what fans can expect from the return of Auli'i Cravalho's titular master voyager and Dwayne Johnson's semi-demi-god Maui. And if this latest trailer for the movie is anything to go by, then there's going to be lots of singing, lots of new characters, lots of peril, and lots of incredible-looking water that makes you nudge whoever's next to you and go, "that water looks so real, doesn't it? Isn't it amazing what they can do these days?" Check it out below (both the trailer and the water — it really is quite something!):
What did we tell you, eh? Marvellous stuff! Helmed by directorial first-timer David Derrick Jr.,...

It’s hard to believe, but the original “Moana” was released eight years ago. That’s a long time for a film that feels like it’s still relatively “new.” Alas, it’s been quite a while, which makes it the perfect time for Disney to release a sequel.

Oh Mary! broke the box office record at the Lyceum Theatre for the sixth time last week, with a gross of $1.16 million.
The show, written by and starring Cole Escola as a reimagined Mary Todd Lincoln, has played to 100 percent capacity almost every week of its run, which began at the end of June. The play also had the highest average paid admission in the industry last week, with an average ticket price of $162.25, edging out shows such as Hamilton, best musical winner The Outsiders and the new play McNeal, starring Robert Downey Jr.

With only three Broadway productions selling out last week, total grosses for the 29 shows was down about 7% from the previous week, settling in at $25,296,948. Total attendance was 226,267 for the week ending September 22, a slip of about 4% from the previous week.
The sell-outs, as usual, were Oh, Mary!; The Outsiders; and McNeal, starring Robert Downey Jr. in his Broadway debut. Stereophonic came close with attendance at 99% of capacity.
Mia Farrow was back at the Booth after a week out due to Covid, resuming her place opposite Patti LuPone in The Roommate. Attendance was at 85% of capacity.
Also of note: Adam Lambert and Auli’I Cravalho began their star turns in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, taking over from original cast members Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin. A $640,719 drop in grosses can be at least partially attributed to significant press tickets and other comps for the week.

Simea’s purpose in the film is to anchor Moana to her home in Motunui.
Entertainment Weekly released a new look at Simea for the upcoming “Moana 2” film.
The co-director based Moana and Simea’s relationship on his own family.
David Derrick Jr. had kids of similar ages during the pandemic and used their experiences after lockdown when his daughter could once again return to normal life outside as inspiration. He said, “He would grab her and he’s like, ‘Samea, when are we going to live together forever again? It was so hard, but I was seeing things that we all have to go through as you grow up.

The red handprint is a symbol for the Mmiw movement – Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. It stands for “all of the missing sisters whose voices are not heard” and for “the silence of the media and law enforcement in the midst of this crisis,” according to Native Hope.
In March 2023, Auli’i Cravalho arrived at a premiere also bringing light to the movement.
At tonight’s Emmys, D’Pharaoh is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on Reservation Dogs. He makes history as the first Indigenous actor to be nominated in any lead acting category.

The new Broadway play McNeal, starring Robert Downey Jr., started off with a bang, with $746,230 brought in across just four performances last week.
If the production, which is playing at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater, had played the typical eight performances at that cadence, it would have brought in close to $1.5 million – a big number for a play, putting it in league with the top-grossing musicals. The production played to full houses for every performance, with an average ticket price of $170.37, the second highest in the industry for the week, behind Cabaret, and unusual for a nonprofit house with a large subscription audience.
The play, written by Ayad Akhtar and directed by Bartlett Sher, marks Downey’s Broadway debut and sees him portray a gifted author, but one who always finds himself as runner up for the Pulitzer, as he develops an intense fascination with artificial intelligence. McNeal began previews Sept.

Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin are getting ready to say goodbye to the Broadway musical Cabaret.
The Tony-nominated co-stars were honored with portraits at the iconic restaurant Sardi’s on Thursday (September 5) in New York City.
The walls of Sardi’s is covered with caricature drawings of Broadway’s biggest stars and receiving one is often considered one of the biggest honors for theater actors.
Eddie and Gayle will be wrapping their runs in Cabaret on September 14 and they’ll be succeeded by Adam Lambert and Auli’i Cravalho beginning on September 16.
The Sardi’s event was also attended by Cabaret‘s original Emcee actor Joel Grey and the 2014 revival’s Herr Schulz actor Danny Burstein, who performed alongside Gayle when she played Fraulein Kost in the previous production. Their dressing rooms were next door to each other at Studio 54!

It looks like “fetch” really is not going to happen, and Lacey Chabert, who memorably portrayed Gretchen Wieners in the teen classic Mean Girls, should stop trying to make it happen — according to her daughter, who naturally had no idea what the term referenced.
The Hallmark actress, who is parent to 8-year-old daughter Julia along with husband David Nehdar, told the Today show’s Hoda Kotb, “When she was younger, she was like, ‘What’s fetch, why does everyone say that to you?'”
“She asked me a couple years ago, ‘Mom, do other people watch those movies that you make?’ And I was like, ‘Yes, baby, they’re not just for you,'” she said, wrapping up the amusing anecdote.
Of course, fans of the 2004 Tina Fey hit will remember Gretchen’s unsupported efforts to make a slang word popular. In one scene of the film — which hilariously traces...
