Heading into the second season of “Accused,” series developer Howard Gordon and showrunner Daniel Pearle didn’t have a clear overarching theme in mind. What they had instead was a goal.

“Honestly, we just wanted to be better,” Gordon told TheWrap. “We’re testing the limits.”

That’s a tall order considering the fact that “Accused” is already a difficult feat of television. Fox’s Accused has added four actors to its season two cast. Cobie Smulders, Vella Lovell, Dina Shihabi, and Isabel Arraiza have joined the crime anthology series for the upcoming season.

Fox has added several new faces to Season 2 of Howard Gordon’s Accused. Cobie Smulders, Vella Lovell, Dina Shihabi and Isabel Arraiza will join the upcoming installment of the crime anthology series.

They join some heavy hitters who have already been announced for Season 2, including Felicity Huffman, Taylor Schilling, Patrick J. Adams, William H. Macy, Justin Chambers, Danny Pino and Nick Cannon. Michael Chiklis is also returning in front of and behind the camera, after starring in the premiere and directing a later episode in Season 1.

The broadcast network has handed out a third season renewal to the comedy series starring Joel McHale, with the pickup arriving a month before its sophomore run debuts.

Created by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Dan Sterling with Tad Quill attached as showrunner, Community grad McHale stars in the comedy that is the first series that Fox fully owns after the sale of its studio counterpart to Disney a few years ago. “Animal Control” hails from writers and executive producers Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg, and Dan Sterling. All three executive produce along with Jake Fuller of Jax Media as well as Tad Quill and McHale, with Quill serving as showrunner. Fox Entertainment Studios produces the series. The comedy, which scored a record streaming debut for Fox, has lined up international sales in key English-language territories, including UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, bringing revenue for the company. (The network’s roster of fully owned scripted series also includes animated comedy Krapopolis.)

Exclusive: Ken Jeong, Sarah Chalke and Krystal Smith have been cast in guest roles on the upcoming Season 2 of Animal Control.

Jeong’s role will reunite him with his Community co-star Joel McHale, who leads the Fox workplace comedy. The comedian, who is also a judge on Fox’s The Masked Singer, will play “Lee Park,” a well-respected, moderately unhinged dog whisperer.

Chalke has been cast for the guest star role of “Yazmin,” Frank’s (McHale) “one who got away.”

Smith will appear in a recurring guest star role as “Bettany,” Emily’s (Vella Lovell) tenacious and tough new assistant. Smith returns to Fox, having previously starred as “Mandy Matthews” in Welcome to Flatch.

Animal Control got the Season 2 go ahead in May after a successful launch as Fox’s most-streamed scripted debut of all time. The second installment is set to premiere on March 6.

Channel 4 in the U.K. has acquired the television rights for “Animal Control,” the Joel McHale-led comedy that debuted on Fox in February. The series will air on E4, a linear channel operated by Channel 4 that targets the adults 18-34 demographic.

This marks the first scripted licensing deal between Channel 4 and Fox Entertainment Global (Feg). “Animal Control” has also been exported to Foxtel’s Fox8 channel and its streaming service Binge in Australia, CBC and streamer CBC Gem in Canada, and Tvnz in New Zealand.

“Animal Control” stars McHale as Frank, an opinionated, eccentric Animal Control officer and ex-cop who, after a failed attempt at exposing corruption in his police department, found himself incarcerating animals and becoming all the more cynical and curmudgeonly. The single-camera show, Fox's first wholly-owned live-action comedy, launched as the network's most-streamed scripted debut ever and most-watched comedy series this season to date.

“Animal Control” has been renewed for Season 2 at Fox, Variety has learned.

The renewal comes as little surprise, given the fact that the show is Fox’s first wholly owned live-action comedy. Per Fox, the show’s premiere was the network’s most streamed scripted debut ever, drawing an estimated 4.5 million viewers across all platforms in its first three days of availability.

As the name suggests, the series centers on a group of animal control workers. The cast is led by Joel McHale, who stars alongside Michael Rowland, Vella Lovell, Ravi Patel, Grace Palmer, Alvina August, Kelli Ogmundson, and Gerry Dee.

The series premiere, which launched Feb. 16, debuted as Fox’s most-streamed premiere in network history and became most-streamed comedy episode ever in the network’s history. “Animal Control” currently averages 4.7 million total viewers across platforms, marking a +236% boost from live plus same-day Nielsen figures.

Season to date, Animal Control is averaging 2.25 million total viewers and a 0.4 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), Out of the eight comedies that Fox has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 2 in audience (right behind The Simpsons) and ties for No. 4 in the demo.

But I think we discover a German submarine and we take command of it, but all the controls are in German so we don’t even know how to drive it and we’re getting a lot of depth charges going off,” joked star Joel McHale during Deadline’s Contenders TV panel. “So it’s exciting.
